It is a small 4-wheeled crane with a 360-degree rotating hydraulic industrial crane boom housed in the center of the machine. The crane deck also houses an operator’s cabin at one side of the boom. The area above the wheels is a flat deck designed for loading and moving heavy material around a job site. These cranes offer huge versatility, have very good maneuverability, and high power for their small size. A little about the Shuttlelift 5540F by Manitowoc, I thought it was manufactured by Shuttlelift Company. It was made by the Shuttlelift Company. Shuttlelift Automation Machinery Manufacturing to be exact. Manitowoc Cranes began as a business venture by Charles West and Elias Gunnell. At the time, they headed the Manitowoc Dry Dock Company, now The Manitowoc Company, Inc. Charles West was wanting to diversify their business, so he found the Moore Speedcrane Company. Moore’s Speedcrane Company was needing financial backing so West decided to help out. As part of the deal, Moore’s Speedcrane Company patents were signed over to Manitowoc company. Manitowoc was now in business as a leading crane producer, which they still are today. The history of the Shuttlelift Co. is quite limited. I was barely able to find anything on them, but I did learn that they were a major producer of Gantry Cranes. Shuttlelift has made their Gantry Cranes a popular product line through adaptable design and maximum maneuverability. Superior engineering innovations and customer-driven improvements have equipped the Shuttlelift rubber-tired gantry crane as the preferred innovative lifting solution. One dark night a fairly new carry deck crane was loaded on a flat bottom barge. The idea was to transport the crane from a large island near the middle of the great Salt Lake in Utah to the mainland. Now the great Salt Lake is a shallow lake that has a flat bottom. The depth of the lake averaged between 4 and 5 feet at the time. Weather did not favor the transport. The weather over the Lake could and did change fast. The wind came up, and huge waves began crossing the lake. That did not bode well for the barge and the crane. Halfway across the lake the crew had to abandon ship just before the barge capsized, dumping its load into the lake. The crane sank to the bottom of the lake to lay in the mud for 30 plus years. Today the great Salt Lake has partially dried up exposing the sunk crane laying on its side. The authorities wanted it removed from the lakebed because the crane had become an attractive nuisance. A recovery team was employed to remove the crane at considerable risk. Crews spent two days recovering the crane. The first day was digging the crane out of the bottom which was successful. Unfortunately, while dragging the crane to shore, a storm came up and the recovery had to be abandoned as the recovery truck was starting to get stuck. About a month later, the crew reassembled with more equipment and successfully recovered the crane out of the great Salt Lake. It was corn harvest time! And since its Fall now, and corn harvest is going on acrossed America, I thought I should talk about corn and the machines that harvest corn, in particular the corn picker. The corn picker has taken many forms over the years. It was first thought of in 1850. The corn picker has evolved to today’s modern machines for picking and processing corn. Most farmers take these modern machines for granted. These machines can pick and process many acres of corn per day, however, that was not the case before 1850. Back then, corn was hand-picked, hand husked, and the kernels of corn removed by hand. It was tough work and there were some tools to help but it was still a difficult process. What is corn? Corn is a human invention, a plant that does not exist naturally in the wild. Corn can only survive if planted and protected by humans. It is believed that people living in central Mexico developed corn at least 7000 years ago. Corn evolved through selective breeding from a wild grass called teosinte. Teosinte looked very different from our corn today. Notice how the kernels are small and are not placed close together like kernels on an ear of modern corn. From Mexico, maize spread north into the Southwestern United States and south down the coast to Peru. About 1000 years ago, as Indian people migrated north into present day North America, they brought corn with them. When people from Europe made contact with people the living in North and South America, they found corn was a major part of the native people’s diet. When Columbus "discovered" America, he also discovered corn. But up to this time, people living in Europe did not know about corn. Their main grain was and still is wheat. There are many legends on how corn spread throughout north and south America. The Sioux had a legend about a hermit that gave them corn. But the most interesting legend came from the Sauk Tribe of mid-western North America. I want to tell you this legend about how corn came to the people of this tribe.
