3BO: 10 Mistakes Boom Operators Make - Sound Speeds
Boom operators can be difficult to pin down and ask questions of and to have one tell you what not to do is so incredibly valuable. Even more rare will they list mistakes and tell you why they are habits to avoid but in this video, that's exactly what you'll find. Master boom operator and educator Ken Strain joins us again in this episode to help create this list of 10 mistakes that boom operators make.
It's easy for boom operators to make mistakes on set. Perhaps they didn't spend enough time as a utility before moving up, perhaps they aren't open to learning from other boom operators or maybe they are just inexperienced - whatever the case there are many reasons you may not know what you don't know. It's OK to make mistakes but it's important to not just know what to do but what not to do. Staying open to learning is also critical. There are many things that could have made the list but these are the 10 we dialed in on. Serious boom operators should pay attention and and learn.
If you have any questions about anything in this video, be sure to write them in the comments below.

All is well and your gear is running perfectly until... water sneaks into your system. There are many solutions but my personal favorite involves pressure. A quick but agressive solution lies before your eyes...

At the cost of an ounce or two, having a quick release on the end of your boompole can make the difference between getting a microphone switched out in time to get your dialogue. There are many different version online ranging from $21 to $137 and each one has advantages over the others. In this video I will showcase 6 shockmounts currently available on the market (at the time of this video). Discontinued and currently unavailable models will not be featured nor will quick releases that are only compatible with one boom pole or cameras.

After I posted my Deity TC-1 sync box and TC-SL1 slate review in the Deity User Group on Facebook, a question came up about the accuracy of these devices in freezing cold weather. I like to consider myself thorough in my testing so I decided to do a follow-up since my weather dropped down well below freezing at that exact time.

I'm aware that the audio isn't clean. That's the point.
All too often people buy microphones expecting them to sound the way they did in a review they watched on YouTube. There are many things that could lead people to believe that a particular mic would be best for them but when they listen to it, they suddenly find it isn't ideal. Reasons for this could range from the tonal or pitch of the voice to the acoustic treatment in the room you're using the microphone in.
Not all microphones are equal. Some are best for fidelity while others are forgotten because they move with your head but which is best for using in an untreated room?
In this video I'm comparing 10 different kinds of microphones ranging from my camera mic to a lav mic to a long shotgun mic. We'll get down to the bottom of this one!

As you figured out, this was an April Fools Prank so officially... welcome to my April Fools 2020 Prank!
---------- Original Post ----------
I recently came across a really amazing find, a microphone you can buy for less than $3 that can outperform the $1800 DPA 4017B short shotgun microphone in a series of tests. The microphone I'm referring to is the unbranded microphone known as the WS-858.
Join me as I put my choice for the best short shotgun microphone against the WS-858 microphone.

Since starting Sound Speeds I've been asked many times why I started Sound Speeds. What does Sound Speeds mean? Why do I do my videos in a booth looking environment? In this video, I'll address all of that and much more.
I'm very aware that this video may bore some but I try to keep it interesting. In this video I share a clip of the first ever video test I did for Sound Speeds and you quickly realize why I chose not to do my videos like that. I share a few things that helped me when I started Sound Speeds and even talk a bit about what I'm going to be doing on this channel in the future. If sitting at your computer watching me tell my story isn't something you can handle, maybe listen to this one while doing the dishes, driving to work or on a jog. I hope you enjoy!

------------------------------------------ NOTE: ------------------------------------------
In this video I say you don't need to have a microphone in your face and that it looks dumb to me. To clarify, if you're doing a YouTube video specifically about a particular voice-over mic or have a reason for it, that's fine but if you are doing a general sound video (like I often do) or are doing a video about a different topic, having a microphone in your face doesn't make sense to me at all.

No, it's not about the gear but rather the person using it but it's easy to get caught up with upgrading the gear you use. Sometimes you may think that you need the most expensive sound gear to do the best job... but do you really? In this video we'll cover quality for the price. Sound Speeds!

No, this is not clickbait - I really am showing you 4K video footage and audio inside a blender WHILE IT'S ON. All it takes is having a camera you're willing to potentially do without and multiple microphones including hydrophones that can pick up sound in water. Yep, I placed a check in the box on both of those.
What lead me to do this? A few years ago my friend Matt Price at Sound Rolling put a hydrophone inside a blender (watch it here: https://youtu.be/OId8BgguCg4). While that was a lot of fun to listen to, I got curious and wanted to take it take it to the next level. In this video you'll see the first person view perspective of the blades inside the blender along with other audio sources. Who knows what will happen.

Note: I did remove the background noise from the audio tracks. There wasn't much so it didn't require much processing. The only other processing I did was Auphonic Leveling to -16 LUFS.
