We wanted to share with you how we raise the baby chicks off the grid here on our homestead as well as discussing the responsibility that comes along with that decision.
Living Sustainably isn't just about raising your own food like raising chickens for meat or eggs. Learning how to manage a flock of birds is a very important part of having a sustainable flock. Bringing in new birds from time to time is necessary to maintain a healthy flock. There are a number of ways that you can do that from acquiring hatching eggs to slip under a broody hen to picking up day-old chicks which is what we did this year.
We chose to get the day-old chicks because they were sexed pullets which means they will all be hens. When you raise chicks from hatching eggs you can easily get more roosters than hens and we mainly have our chickens for eggs.

Welcome back to the homestead! I really enjoy raising our Light Brahma Heritage Breed Chickens. They are a wonderful homestead bird. Our newer addition Buff Orpingtons are so different in temperament it will be interesting to watch them mature.
In this video, you get to see a comparison of the chicks at the same age, also very interesting. The one Chick is supposed to be a Prairie Egger but I don't know! It looks a lot like the Brahma chick time will tell!
Remember we raise our chicks off the grid. That means no electric lighting and I really believe that it makes for a very sturdy healthy bird.
Thanks again for watching and commenting I really enjoy talking with all of you and I look forward to sharing more on the new homestead very soon.

Update....Since I posted this video of me and Punkin walking with the Kitties our Yellow Friend Golden past away. We found him in the yard with no visible injuries and he died on the way to the vet. So glad I recorded this that day! We MISS him.

This video is from a few days ago. Its sleeting again now as I'm trying to download this clip. It's been a very rough week for us. But so far we are making it. Been really hard on the animals we are working hard to take care of them all day every day! Snowed/iced in since Saturday. That's 4 days at this point.
Really needing it to break.
Stay tuned......
