After a minor accident returning from Minca, we made a short stop in Palomino. We then arrived in the department of La Guajira for some Colombia birding with a local indigenous guide. Camarones is a small community located 19 minutes from Riohacha, the capital of the department of La Guajira. Located in the north, the area is home to the Wayúus, an indigenous group, and various afro Colombian communities. Several Wayúu communities are responsible for the conservation and protection of land on the outskirts of the town, with no more than 7,000 people occupying the area.
Geographically, the area is a Savana providing views of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. The climate is extremely warm, ranging from 28-45°C, and thus is a relatively arid area. None he less, we discovered Los Flamencos, a flora and fauna sanctuary about 20 minutes from Riohacha. This sanctuary natural offers visitors a wonderful spectacle of flamingos as they strut along the lagoons. These graceful creatures with their vibrant feathers are the principal attraction, but the area in general is ideal for Colombia birdwatching, as it provides a wide variety of aquatic birds. So bring your cameras for some great Colombia birding photography.
