We saw last week that what this verse is literally saying is, "Having put off the lie, speak truth with each other." The word "speak" here is a present active imperative indicating that they are to make a habit of speaking the truth. Then Paul gives the reason that we are to speak truth to our neighbors: "For we are members of one another." The Christian who lies is in reality hurting the body of which he is a part. We saw from various Scriptures that Yahweh hates lying! Yahweh is a God of truth! Believers are dwelling in the New Jerusalem, the city of truth, with the God of truth. So we are to speak the truth. S.L. Johnson writes, "As far as I can tell, the Bible does not ever justify lying, regardless of the circumstances." What do you think of that? Is it ever right to tell a lie?
