Mind's desire - The lost art of guitar improv. Why does no one play like this anymore? (Join chat!)
Here's a long jam from summer 2021. I'm trying to catch up on my backlog but still have another 300 jams to go. Music to me is all about improvisation. That is the whole point in being a musician. It's not only the pinnacle of expression, it is music therapy, for myself and others who listen. I have played guitar for almost 50 years, and only in the last 15 have I become adept at improvising for hours on end. It requires thousands of hours of practice and daily immersion. It doesn't really exist anymore. It is even feared. People are stuck in boxes, afraid to make mistakes. Guitarists today are happy to read tabs, copy everyone else's solos, and can't improvise their way out of a paper bag. Improv was popular in up until the 1970's then quickly faded into obscurity. I attribute this to 1) the guitar no longer being popular, 2) laziness 3) Fear of the time needed to improve. 4) Fear of mistakes. 5) Popular music no longer requires improvisation, as it's all sampled by computer now.

I think I need to add more blues to the set. Notice the reaction? I'm not really a blues player, or purist, but it's one style that seems to connect with almost everyone. This song is about the only blues I ever played for the last 3 years on the street. I threw it in as a "I guess I should play at least one" type of thing.
I can play really complex pieces that require tremendous amounts of rehearsal, dexterity, and get zero reaction, and then play slow and drag out notes for 4 bars and everyone loves it. Just goes to show that the public doesn't care about fancy or fast guitar playing. They only need something they can understand, and everyone understands the blues.
So next day, it's going to be 'stormy monday' and 'tin pan alley'.

I was hired for a private party. Harley had been wanting me to play at his house for at least a year, but I was in no shape to do it, recovering from the brain aneurism last April. Finally after he contacted me the fifth time, I was getting my energy back and agreed to play his party. I started my first gig in 3 years with an extended jam. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn on my audio recorder, so the only audio I have is from the camera itself. I've played this on the street before. Nice to have a crowd that actually enjoys my music! This was the only song that had daylight on it. I started around 6pm and then it got dark fast. All upcoming videos from this show will be by candle light. I talk to one of the guests at 24:45. He was totally into it! Since I forgot to turn on my audio recorder, the audio comes from the camera, so you will actually hear me hitting the strings.

This is short clip from what was an hour long Floyd style jam. (I will post entire video later with pro sound) The audio in this clip is from the camera so you can hear her reaction. My full jam will have much better audio from the recorder. It's from Sunday, May 1. I played for 4 hours until my fingers were peeling. This was the first time I had to stop from sheer exhaustion, as I had basically put everything into this one hour Floyd jam and kept increasing the intensity as people gathered.
This woman (tourist) sat down to enjoy the show and soon got up to dance and make strange whooping noises for at least 45 minutes. She was either totally high, or just really getting into it. Her constant dancing and whooping got me more attention from others and soon there were 5 people filming me. The girl who looks like Cindi Lauper is also a tourist. I don't get these reactions from locals. It's like people need to see one person reacting before they feel safe to react themselves. Remember, it's bandcamp Friday May 6. No fees for me! Street jam from May 6/22. Blues rock jam based on Hendrix 'Hear my train a coming'. I stand at a bus stop, so it's 'Hear my bus a coming'. This was when I still used my traynor busking amp and put the recorder in front. The amp broke down around June, and I got a new one that was smaller and I could record direct from the amp to the recorder.
