The strongest typhoon in over a decade hit the central coast of Vietnam and tore through Da Nang. Our 6 storey building swayed from the force, and it felt a bit like being on a boat. It reminded me of the many earthquakes I've lived through in California. I could hear the building groaning and grinding, and it was very unsettling. The building across the street lost its metal roof, which was ripped off by powerful winds and carried down the road.
We got through it though, and the next day I went out to explore the neighborhood and the beach to see what was left in the storm's wake. The streets were filled with debris, fallen branches and many were unpassable due to trees ripped up by the roots. Half the city still had no power. The sound of chainsaws could be heard everywhere, as clean up crews hit the streets to clear fallen trees.
Many in Vietnam were not so lucky -- this typhoon was a killer and many are still missing. The number of people displaced, who have lost everything from this seasons heavy rains, typhoons, flooding and landslides is just staggering.
Another typhoon is churning off the coast and we're in for some more harsh weather. Batten down those hatches and stay safe everyone!

What does a mask actually protect you from, and how? Let's have an important, frank discussion about the very natural tendency to feel safe and protected when we put on a mask...vs the reality.

Da Nang's iconic DRAGON BRIDGE breathes fire! Saturday nights, people gather around to watch and take selfies. Or so I've been told. It's not really the kind of thing that interests me, so I haven't bothered to be there at the right time on the right day to witness this.
But, the Dragon Bridge, and the area around it, is an interesting place to explore. In this video, we'll take a look at the Dragon Bridge in the daytime, take a walk over, under and around it -- and then we'll check it out at night -- a whole different experience.
There's a lot going on in the world, and I imagine, in your life, too. This is a video made to help you relax, and take you on a short journey into another world...my world. I hope you'll take a moment to put on some headphones and unwind, let everything go for a few minutes and enjoy watching the the motorbikes, the people living regular lives, the boats and the light display on and around the Dragon Bridge. If you know someone else who could use a relaxing break, consider sharing this video with them.
Have you ever wondered what it's like to travel alone? To travel slowly and deeply? What kind of night walks would you take?
?I made this video to be quiet and relaxing, so it's best enjoyed with headphones. I know, I keep saying that! But it's true. Just try it, you'll see what I mean.

Throw on some ? and settle in for a relaxing exploration, starting at the Man Thai fishing village and docks.
Use the chapter links to navigate:
00:00 Man Thai fishing boats
02:34 Motorcycle ride to docks
05:52 My Khe beach workouts
19:29 Let's eat! Com Nha Linh
The main strip of My Khe beach gets all the love, but drive up the coast a few minutes and you'll find a beach with a very different feel. You'll see a massive fleet of fishing boats -- small round woven boats and further on, large powered fishing vessels docked at the very northern edge of the shore. We start our evening here, at sunset.
It's getting warmer, every day, a little bit more. But you can still catch a fresh breeze at night, after the sun goes down.
We've got some hot guys on the beach in California, but I'd say the cuties working out (and showing off...just a little!) on My Khe beach are just as fun to watch. What do you think?
There's a group that gets together to dance on the beach boardwalk -- everyone is welcome, and people bring their kids too. It's all about staying fit, staying connected to the community, having a great time and maintaining your mental health. Times have been so tough, and it's important to know you're not alone.
I'll see you in my next video, until then..be well.

What's winter like in Da Nang? If you asked me last year, I'd say it was the absolute best time of year. But last winter was unusually mild and dry...and this year we've snapped back to something closer to normal.
It's been relentlessly dark, chilly, wet and rainy: a cold, soggy perpetual twilight. So when a day breaks with blue skies, it's pure joy.
So I'm grabbing my camera and breaking out of the confines of my small studio apartment -- I'm heading to the beach to soak up the mild winter sun and fresh sea air. Let's go!
Want to skip ahead? Use the chapter links to navigate:
00:00 An Thuong neighborhood
02:53 My Khe Beach
06:59 On the boardwalk
10:46 Fishermen
14:37 Bãi tắm Võ Văn Kiệt
17:03 Seafood Ladies!
When you get to the part with the fishermen, you'll see a team of people hauling something up from the sea with a long rope...I've no idea what this is about. I see this often in the morning, and I don't know if they are acting as a tether for a round fishing boat out at sea, or...what? Any Da Nangers have the answer? Leave it in the comments! The rope is really long...it goes way out into the waves and disappears. The only thing I can see out there is a round woven fishing boat in the far distance. A mystery.
Thanks for coming along for my sun celebration beach walk. I'll see you in my next video, until then..be well.

It's a FULL MOON night in Da Nang, come take a long beach walk with me and explore the different moods of My Khe beach. The borders are still closed to international travel and Da Nang is quiet. My Khe is a famous stretch of white sand beach -- and would normally be packed with tourists on a gorgeous night like this.
But tonight, it's just ours. Once the borders open, we won't see My Khe beach, or Da Nang, like this again, and I'm happy to share this quiet, peaceful version of My Khe with you.
Full moons are beautiful anywhere, but they are pure magic on the beach. I shot this at the last full moon, but now that I'm uploading it, the rains have come and we're in the grip of a massive stormfront. Driving around the city today I saw so many giant trees down, and light poles as well. No more beach time for a while, so I really enjoyed editing and watching these clips of that perfect, warm night.
There's a lot going on in the world, and I imagine, in your life, too. It's a lot to deal with. I hope you'll take a moment to put on some headphones and relax, let everything go for a few minutes and enjoy the simplicity of the waves, the colors, the people, and of course, the gorgeous moon.
