There's something the CGA don't understand? Just...people. Just certain things those folks tend to say. But I do have my own way! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArfHdX8gOfw
#RPGaDAY
RpgaDay is a Community jam event to talk about the good in rpgs. To be positive about our hobby--and share that positivity with the community through the month of August.
For video content creators, RPGaDay is a tough road to hoe given the greater effort it takes to push out videos worth watching, to keep oneself from rambling the audience's ear off--and I want to share stuff that is worth YOUR time--I make a channel that *I* would watch. With that in mind, this year's RPGaDay 2020 will be something more evergreen and purposeful.
This year, my RPGaDay Responses will form a short study course transmitting some of the ideas I've found useful, excercises in adventure and encounter design, and good mechanics that are worth a second look. I will be speaking more overtly in the role of a teacher, professor, or mentor at times...I know that I really don't know much more than the average person that comments on my channel, so this tone and approach may not be for everyone...

Reaching back into a glorious vintage of the early days of the 'alt-gaming' scene, there was born a campaign setting made by, and intended for, those who knew that the human story of history, the specter of wont, and the great adventure of roleplaying a whole, motivated individual surpassed what could be achieved between dungeon walls alone.
Hârn is a world where no stone is out of place, and each is waiting to be discovered, and leveraged, to elevate your Medieval fantasy gaming. It is a singular achievement of worldbuilding in the same tier as Westeros, Middle-Earth, the Third Imperium, and the The World of Darkness.
Join me in discovering it.

#RPGaDAY Day 25: Great Character
With special Guest! and this time the nature footage is somewhat higher quality...because it's not mine! In general, a paean to random elements in chargen, and specifically to the chargen in Hackmaster 4. Enjoy.

No really...each system has a different sort of character creation process. Some of them ask you to pick a class and a level, some are wide open for anything the player can think of; others are more specific. Some ask you to wend the path of the character's life to the day that they're ready to set out for (adventure). (Adventure)?....Well, that's whatever each particular RPG suggests to the GM and Players will be the substance of play.
How did you get here?

THE OSR is starting to be pretty old! there are some fixed ideas about what an OSR TTRPG is. Does it have to be D&D based? Does it have to be minimalist? Does it have to be Fantasy?
I'm here to shake up your foundations...by recommending these 3 OSR TTRPGs for 2021 which AREN'T neccessarily ANY OF THE ABOVE!!!
We'll be Flipping through Against the DarkMaster, a MERP AND Rolemaster inspired game.
We'll be looking at Aces & Eights, which follows in the footsteps of Boot Hill, but uses some unique mechanics for shooting and rests on the bedrock of Hackmaster 4th Edition's character creation system. It's an AD&D-derived OSR....but it isn't fantasy!
We'll also take a look at Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea, a Rollicking remix of AD&D 1st edition, freshening it up but holding true to the bedrock of that ancient game.

I know, I said I was on Hiatus...I'm still on Hiatus! I just got struck by a mania and had to make this one. it was the only way for the hiatus to continue.
The first OSR Game I heard about was Labyrinth Lord. Around that time, I dove headlong into a different game, the public perception of which I think has long shortchanged the many awesome ideas between its pages.
Since it was released in 2001-2004, Kenzer & Company has moved on to Hackmaster 5E, which is more an homage to RuneQuest, Harnmaster, and also ploughs new earth, and has less of D&D in its direct lineage. It is no less a good game, but HM4 is a beast unto itself, and today it gets a love letter from the CGA.

It's almost too easy for folks to say 'uggh these rulebooks are so thick!' you can always make a ruling and breeze past those moments where people are flipping pages.
But if there are rules, and the GM and maybe even the players know them, there are fewer moments of argument about where your character is. There are fewer 'whoa I didn't see that one coming' moments.
Did you ever notice that when you're off the grid your character ends up in places you thought he'd never go in his right mind? Did you ever wish your character could get someplace, but the steps to get there would take up too much spotlight, and too much GM time, so you didn't bother asking?
what if you could make a little bit of a plan, because the rules have an 'autopilot mode' that you as the player can use to check if what you're about to do seems legit?
All of this, and more, is possible in crunchy, 'simulationist' TTRPGs. You'd be surprised how much time you save knowing how things work!
