I hope that all of you are enjoying your end of summer/back to school time. Today, I want to talk about a topic I have seen a lot about lately on Twitter. It is in regards to college baseball. If you are a HS player right now, I am sure it is your dream to play at next level. And that you are working relentlessly towards that goal. One of the most popular ways to do so nowadays is the Showcase circuit. You can display your skills in front of a large number of college coaches. I have mixed feelings about showcases. They do provide a lot of opportunities, yet also come with a cost, that goes beyond dollars. However, Thats for another video. So a few things to keep in mind about college baseball First off, it is a privilege to play college baseball. You have to work every day to prove your worth to wear the uniform. Players from the next recruiting classes coming in behind you will gladly take your spot when offered. Which is why you must understand, that once you move past HS as a ball player, this game can take you many different directions. A lot of them are not favorable. I am being honest and speaking from experience, AsI share this info with every player that I have coached in HS who went to play in college. This is even more so true today as there is a log jam in college baseball with the 2020 seniors getting back their year of eligibility. On top of schools that already have, and those soon to drop their baseball programs due to budget cuts. It Is unfortunate. How do you excel in the face of this adversity??? As I say in every video: Execute your pitches with full conviction and compete. Come Ready to do it every day. That's what builds trust in a coaching staff. I know velocity and the good data reports are what get your foot in the door. They don’t mean anything if you do not fulfill the 2 attributes I just shared. Coming up with the the Yankees in the mid 1980s, Leiter also pitched for the Blue Jays, Marlins, and Mets in his 19 year MLB career. Al Leiter pitched in 3 World Series, winning 2 , 1993 & 1997. In this video I am going to share 3 simple things which you need to do to throw the Slider consistently. When you throw the Slider consistently, you will flat out DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!! Lets jump right into it! #1. Stay behind the baseball This is also important for throwing a fastball and other pitches as well. What do i mean when i say stay behind the ball. It means don't be under it or too much to the side of it. Regardless of your arm slot You properly get to this point in your delivery by doing everything correctly with you mechanics from the ground up. From the time your feet first move to deliver the pitch. Pitching is a connective chain of movements. As you put this into action, you will notice the prerequisites of staying behind the ball as they continue on to the next 2 steps as well When you can stay behind the ball, you will be in command of your pitches. When you see a pitcher falling underneath the baseball as a result of mechanical flaws, you know bad things are going to happen. You can foresee it before the ball even gets released. When you do this step correctly, you will execute #2 correctly #2 Release the Slider Out in Front Releasing the Slider out in front maximizes it’s effectiveness. You are best positioned to finish the pitch and command the Slider to break how you wish. It’s going to break later and be sharper. That what you want in this Dominant pitch. The more consistently that you do this, the more consistent your results will be. That’s what coaches and scouts want to see. I know where you want to be as a pitcher. #3. Throw the Slider Downhill Naturally, when you do the 1st two correctly, this will follow suit Down hill means more tilt. 2 plane Slider. Its not a side to side breaking pitch. This is when you will miss more bats. OBVIOUSLY MEANS MORE STRIKEOUTS AND PISSED OFF HITTERS WHO FACE YOU. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! When you have the mindset to throw downhill, your body will cooperate to make the ball go accordingly. You wont be fighting yourself you will be relaxed and fluid If you are not mentally focused/prepared on throwing downhill, you wont!
