This song is a commentary about how the main body of Christ is ignoring their marching orders given by Christ and opts for a more worldly approach towards getting people into the pews. While this song doesn't speak to all Christians, it does speak to the churches that seem to be watering down the message, not making it too spicy for the weak tongues of the world. The song starts out with a supermarket scene. You overhear a light Jazz swing with "Call Me Irresponsible" lightly sung in the background. The "clerk" is calling out price checks and diverting the customers attention towards superficial things, all the while, the one "product" is being ignored. Rising in the background is a trumpet-type of sound growing in intensity, until it's the only thing you hear. The song suddenly cuts to "the prophet", speaking a dyre warning to the flock.
Lyrics:
Verse 1:
Brothers, can you hear me
Sisters, don't you know
Time is drawing nearer
and soon, we got to go
So why are you restin'
in the middle of the race
and feeding the blind
with ice cream and cake
Refrain:
(ahooh, ahooh)
Are you blind?!
(ahooh, ahooh)
Are you asleep?!
(ahooh, ahooh)
The trumpet gonna sound
(ahooh, ahooh)
Better get back up on your feet
Verse 2:
Brothers and sisters
listen to my plea,
you got one eye on the world
and one eye on the King.
When you stand before the man
what you gonna say
when you come up empty handed
on that final day?
Refrain:
(ahooh, ahooh)
Are you blind?!
(ahooh, ahooh)
Are you asleep?!
(ahooh, ahooh)
The trumpet gonna sound
(ahooh, ahooh)
Better get back on your feet
Verse 3:
Sisters and brothers
time is growin' short
the judge is a commin'
with His verdict in His sword.
Where will you stand
on that final day?
Will he find you naked
confused and ashamed?
Refrain:
(ahooh, ahooh)
Are you blind?!
(ahooh, ahooh)
Are you asleep?!
(ahooh, ahooh)
The trumpet gonna sound
(ahooh, ahooh)
Better get back on your feet

Yep, this is a sappy song...and I love it for two reasons. One,..it was performed by one of my all time favorite Tenors, Mario Lanza, and two, and this reason is the most important, I think of my beloved wife Sonja. Sweety, this night is for you.

Only 2 days left...
Lyrics:
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight.
This robe of flesh I’ll drop, and rise
To seize the everlasting prize,
And shout, while passing through the air,
“Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!”

This was one of my very first German pieces in beginning voice by Schumann I love singing the language and coupled with the brooding theme of the piece, what seventeen year old wouldn't love it....well, at least this former seventeen year old. Jeff Nolte was my first voice teacher in college that truly emphasized a close relationship between technique and artistry. I miss him. I hope I do you proud.
Here is the German:
Aus der Heimat hinter den Blitzen rot
Da kommen die Wolken her,
Here is the English translation:
Where once at home I laid my head
stormclouds fill the air,
but Father and Mother are long since dead
and no one remembers me there.
How soon, how soon and with what ease
the time of rest draws near:
the wind will rustle through the trees
and none will remember me here.

Though i'm singing with a scratchy throat and there is traffic backed up due to road construction, I won't be swayed from singing this awesome song made famous by Elvis Pressley.
Yes, the voice is going, but singing to the light of the super moon seems to make up for it, at least on my end.

The chancel choir perform this piece during Sunday service. This Hebrew song's translation is as follows:
The words are taken from Isaiah Chapter 52, line 7.
The entire verse is:
Ma navu al heharim raglei mevaser,
mashmia shalom, mashmia tov, mashmia yeshua,
omer letziyon malach Elohayich.
How pleasant on the mountains are the feet of the messenger of good tidings,
proclaiming peace, proclaiming good, proclaiming salvation;
saying to Zion, your God reigns.

Ok, I’m going to go ahead and admit that I don’t have a voice for country songs BUT I had to sing this little ditty as it was the most requested tune to date. I first did this tune when I was a youngin’ at Hershey Pennsylvania in a karaoke booth in a mall. When going up to the high notes, my voice cracked and I was embarrassed. Needless to say that while this song is a good one, my memory of it is not BUT I sucked it up and did it anyway.
I learned a couple of things:
1. Getting up this early makes NO DIFFERENCE with regard to traffic
2. I must turn my phone to “Airplane Mode” as I got a call in the middle of recording
I will say that I didn’t know what to think when, in walking out to the overpass, a skunk crossed my path. Hmmm….
