Water your roses consistently for best performance: inadequate soil moisture is likely the top reason why your shrub's performance declines in the warmth of summer. In this video, I'll give some guidelines about how much to water, when and how to water for best results.

This one method, stem cuttings under humidity domes, is useful for many different perennials & shrubs (including roses). In this video I try to give an idea of the ease and adaptability of the method by propagating 5 kinds of perennials, and of course roses.

Join me for a tour of Clearview Horticultural Products - propagating and growing millions of clematis vines and a large assortment of other flowering and fruiting vines. Rob Wein takes us through their assortment, discusses their hybridization program, shipping, plant care - all the behind-the-scenes details of how this busy nursery produces and ships 3.5 million plants per year.
BTW - if you're reading this far into the description, my favorite part of the tour happens at around 11:20 You know, superhero action movie kind of stuff.

The first step to prepare your roses for winter is to let them "settle down" and harden off at the end of the season. For that reason, I recommend you stop pruning, deadheading and fertilizing roses as the cold season approaches. I'll also discuss the merits of mulching the crown of the rose, and show another wrapping technique for winter protection. Finally, I'll go over some of my recommendations for keeping potted/container roses safe through winter.

Like it or not, getting in front of the camera is a standard part of outreach for small farms and business. I've never featured my camera setup, but this new gimbal/stabilizer from Powervision (the S1 Pocket-Sized Gimbal) is really handy. It's small & lightweight, integrates by app with my phone, and I can use hand gestures to get it to follow my face, start or stop recording or take a photo.

Would you call this method deep mulch? No-till raised beds? Just good old-fashioned top-down soil amendment? Whatever you want to call it, a deep layer of bulk organic (mainly composted wood material) allowed us to overcome the difficulties of our heavy, crusted soil to established this long mixed border in less than one year. Visitors to the farms have commented "well you must have a pretty good soil to begin with!" - then I show them the exposed area. Dry, cracked, lacking organic matter. On its own, it's a difficult surface for new plants to overcome (especially in the dry season). Mulch moderates the moisture, temperature, and gives young roots a foothold in the garden.
Thanks Kathy!

In this DIY bottom heat project, we used PVC pipe and roof heating cables to put heat under the plant benches in our greenhouse. The results are that we gain around 3.5C/6.3F consistently over the overall greenhouse temperature (which is generally a few degrees above outdoor temperature, at least during the daytime. Our hope is to keep the young roots of newly propagated plants from the damage of deep cold during any uncommonly cool stretches.
While this is primarily intended as cold-weather protection, there's a good chance I'll also use the heat to "wake up" the roses early in the spring, and as overflow space in propagating roses in early summer.

The only real "trick" to growing great cilantro in a pot or container is to hold down the temperature. Cilantro (coriander if used for seed) is a cool-season herb, so as soon as temperatures average around 85F (30C) they'll begin to send flowers and stop producing the aromatic foliage gardeners are looking for. I like the variety 'Slo-Bolt' - which seems to resist going to flower/seed a little better than other cilantro.

Mini roses are in a class of their own! Tough, relatively hardy, fast to rebloom, and if you choose carefully, you can fit more color into less space. I've added 20+ miniature roses to my personal collection this year, and in this video I'll show you some of the ones that are performing well (even now, at the tail end of my season).
