Mada & Hugh is a new piano duo comprised of Romanian-born pianist Madalina Danila and Curtis alumni Hugh Sung. In this premiere episode, we introduce ourselves and explore the question posed by the love theme from the 1978 movie "Superman", "Can You Read My Mind?" Piano duets are among the most challenging forms of musical ensemble, requiring precise coordination and unique athletics to form an artistic cohesion, and certainly challenging us to learn to read each others' minds in the process!

Pianists with small hands have to overcome considerable physical challenges in order to be able to play great literature for the piano. Oftentimes those challenges lead to muscle strain and even career-ending injuries. To address the unique needs of smaller hands, engineer and business owner David Steinbuhler collaborated with pianist Christopher Donison in 1991 to develop a new set of standard sizes and prototypes of smaller piano keyboards.
The magic for creating these smaller keyboards takes place in David Steinbuhler's Titusville, Pennsylvania ribbon factory, a family-run business that has been around since 1897 . Step inside and you'll see thousands and thousands of spools of ribbons and rolls of string made to create those ribbons, along with an endless array of machinery, much of it custom built by David's grandfather and uncle. Because they need to make their own parts and tools, David's factory uses a number of specialized machines called CNC, or Computer Numeric Control machines, which use computers to precisely design and cut out parts from wood.
David's piano keyboard workshop can be found on the second floor of his factory, surrounded by old pianos and tools used to create his custom Donison Steinbuhler smaller sized keyboards.

"Psalms: Hyssop & Snow" is the tentative title for a new album based on the book of Psalms, with music by Hugh Sung. The first step is to record the various instrumental tracks, then the vocal tracks will be added on top of those at a later time. Here's a look at the rehearsal of the string quartet for one of the songs, "I Sought The Lord (and Afterward I Knew)". Special thanks to the Healing Rooms ministry of Santa Maria, CA, and Maurice and Devorah Sklar for making this project possible!

"Clair de lune from scratch" is a video lesson series designed to help folks who have never played the piano before get started right away learning how to read real music and play this masterpiece by Claude Debussy. The secret that all teachers use is to teach in small portions, and I hope this will be a fun learning experience for everyone who follows along. You'll get an overview of the whole piece in this video, along with a preview of the different camera angles, screenshots of the digital sheet music score, and a computer representation of the damper pedal to help you learn more dynamically. Please post questions in the comments below, or better yet - send me your video responses showing what you'd like help with, and I'll do my best to integrate those questions alongside the video tutorials. Above all - have fun!

We now show a suggested pedaling for the first page of Clair de lune, using special symbols to indicate when to press, hold, and lift or "change" the pedal. I also talk briefly about some of the technologies I use that dramatically enhance my teaching and playing capabilities, including Home Concert Xtreme, the Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet for drawing digital ink, and an AirTurn ( http://airturn.com ), which is a wireless transmitter connected to a foot pedal that allows me to turn "pages" of digital music without the need for my hands to leave the keyboard. We talk about the need to remember "UP/down" (emphasis on "UP") as a technique for making sure the pedal connects with the notes played in the hands correctly, and how proper pedaling can actually make "legato" or "smooth playing" easier to do with far less tension.
