This morning we are turning to Isaiah 58, where we see two ancient and powerful truths applied by God Himself. This passage is God applying Biblical fasting and a personal Sabbath rest.
HOW’S YOUR HUNGER FOR GOD TODAY?
Several weeks ago we began to study Hungering for God and saw this longing after Jesus with a heart of love and devotion is called Biblical Fasting.
Biblical Fasting, or the voluntary abstinence from good and right things such as food, is a spiritual discipline, which has fallen upon hard times in modern Christianity.
So I repeat what we have learned:
In the Old Testament, we can see that Biblical Fasting was an urgent call to get serious about Knowing God.
In the New Testament, we see Biblical Fasting was an ancient spiritual discipline to reschedule my life with God at the center instead of dining, relaxing, amusing, accumulating, advancing, securing, and a multitude of other things that are not wrong - just deadly to intimacy with the Almighty.
In the Early Church of Acts and the Epistles we see demonstrated that this Hunger for God shaped their lives, their ministry, their worship, and their outreach.
In the Early Church, we see Biblical fasting as a powerful way to yield every part of my life to God's supremacy.
Conclusion: Biblical Fasting is a quick way to declare your allegiance to God's way and glory in every day of your life!

THINKING DEEPLY ABOUT GOD IN A SHALLOW WORLD
Meditation -- or as some of your Bibles translate this word ”take pains with ". What is meditation? Meditation can be described and selected as the digestive faculty of the mind. What we take into our minds we process by meditation.
Meditation is thinking deeply about something; meditation digests what we have learned. There is a terrible spiritual condition of Biblical anorexia -- a lack of hunger for God's Word and its twin sister -- Biblical bulimia. Both are the result of a severe deficiency of Biblical meditation.
When we meditate were take God's Word, examine it, and turn it over and over in our minds. That is the only way to proper nutrition in our unhealthy world. Surrounded by confusing voices, twisted paths, and hurried lives -- God has just the cure for His children.
Paul instructs Timothy to devote himself completely to Jesus Christ. He gives him a simple list of items to follow; they start back in verse seven. He is first to exercise himself toward godliness; then he is to command and teach the truth. In verse 12 is commanded to be an example in all that he does. Then he is to get focused and use his gifts. Then we come to verse 15, and meditate on these things. Paul says to think deeply, to digest these, and to apply them to his life.
In the New Testament world, the Word Paul chose for meditation carries the idea of “being in something" and “giving yourself totally to" that. Like to a napkin absorbing water, it's hard to keep them apart -- the napkin draws water to itself. The believer draws the Word into his life.
Meditation controls our thinking; it dominates us. One way to look upon meditation is to think of all of the life applications that is certain verse could have for us. I would challenge you this morning -- start applying God's Word to your life.
o Think deeply about what your response should be to God.
o Think of every possible application that a Scripture can have in your life. If you do that -- you are meditating.
A word to all you students -- what would you think of a computer class that had no computers for you to work at? Would you feel cheated if you never held a mouse, never typed on a keyboard, never looked at a monitor? Do you get the idea? You're not really studying the Bible if you read it and never apply it to your life. Meditation is the application to my life.

THE BACKGROUND OF SATAN’S WORK IN THIS WORLD
Now you say how does that work? How can they do that?
One thing is for sure; they cannot bring people back from the dead.
Also, they can’t have those people come and speak.
Here's what it is—demons are thousands of years old. These demons were around before the creation of the earth. They were around as a part of Satan’s kingdom and his rebellion against God. One-third of all the angels of God went with Satan (Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14).
These demons went with Satan and sided with him. They became the forces of darkness with Satan, the angel of light as their head, and they for the past thousands of years, have been involved in deluding and influencing humanity. They can understand languages, they can travel freely, they are spirit beings, I am sure that there are some here tonight that are bothering around here and trying to distract people.
They are at the business of distracting, diverting, they like to flash things across our minds and especially if you have something really awful that you never would have thought of and it just came into your mind like that, most likely that is just part of the work of Satan to distract us, to get us tempted and taken away.
A lot of times when they are not doing that, they are actually indwelling human beings and using them as a channel. If the demons can get a bunch of people to sit around in a circle and hold hands and turn the lights out and burn candles and look in crystal balls, they will get right inside of there and talk to them- If the people want to hear something, the demons will tell them.
They can truly as we have seen in a lot of the articles published in popular magazines that are out there, these demons inspire humans to write stories. When I was in high school, there was a best-selling book called Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The man that wrote that said that he was walking down the beach, he was a frustrated writer and all of a sudden he heard a voice behind him saying do you want to write a book? He said that he wanted to write a book. The voice told him to go home. The man took a pen put it between his hands and said “I yield to your spirit.” He started writing in perfect flawless English, page after page, and wrote the entire book, which became a multi-million-copy bestseller. That is a demon-produced book. There are many others that are out there right now.
That is what we are talking about in verse 16. That is what Paul was confronting—head-on—the powers of darkness.
Verse 17, “This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most-High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation."
Now just as Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul did not like this kind of advertising. He said we don’t need any promotion from Satan and his kingdom. So from the tenses of the verbs here, this was not a singular event.
It says in verse 18, “And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.

Today we are looking back at Christmas through the lens of the Holy Spirit. We see another way God teaches us about the Spirit’s work, using the lives of everyday people surrounding Christ's birth.
First, we saw Simeon Illustrating Spirit-Guided Living.
Then, we saw Mary illustrating Un-Common Living Prompted by the Spirit.
Now we come to Zacharias & Elizabeth where we find them illustrating that Living a Spirit-Filled Life, Useful to God: is Not Easy.
Before us, this morning is an astounding section of Scripture. As we open to Luke 1, we are opening to the third Gospel. Like each of the other Gospels, Luke has a unique perspective on Christ.
JESUS CHRIST: THE PERFECT KING, SERVANT & MAN
In Matthew Jesus Christ is presented as the Perfect King. From Christ's genealogy to the Wisemen coming to announce Him to Herod: Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the Perfect King.
In Mark, Jesus Christ is presented as the Perfect Servant. From His lack of genealogy to His non-stop powerful actions: Mark emphasizes that Jesus is the Perfect Servant.
In Luke Jesus Christ is presented as the Perfect Man. From Luke’s portrayal, we see Christ's compassionate care of the weak, poor, sick, and oppressed: Luke emphasizes that Jesus is the Perfect Man.
So how does God open Luke’s portrait of Christ's perfect humanity? Amazingly, God starts with an entire chapter about the earthly family surrounding Christ's birth; and we get to meet the relatives of Jesus. Luke chapter 1 opens with a glimpse into the lives of Zacharias, Elizabeth & John in verses 5-80, where family insights fill this account.
Before we look at the entire scope of their lives, note with me one common denominator that God wrote down for us. I like to call Zacharias & Elizabeth:
THE FIRST SPIRIT-FILLED FAMILY
Look at Luke 1:15 and in your Bible circle these five amazing words: “filled with the Holy Spirit”. Who was being described here? John, the son of Zacharias & Elizabeth, was promised to be filled by God’s Spirit from his mother’s womb. That is an amazing element of God’s working that we seldom see recorded in Scripture, but that God promised here. So John the Baptist was recorded as being “filled with the Spirit”.
Now, move on down to Luke 1:41 and in your Bible circle these five amazing words: “filled with the Holy Spirit”. Who was being described here? This time it is Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist who is filled with God’s Spirit. She goes on to praise God as the baby John leaped within her womb at the sound of Mary’s greeting.
Now, move on down to Luke 1:67 and in your Bible circle these five amazing words: “filled with the Holy Spirit”. Who was being described here? This time it is Zacharias, father of John the Baptist who is filled with God’s Spirit. He goes on to give one of the most powerful hymns of praise to God ever written. Zacharias overflows with a lesson about Christ's coming from no less than eight different Old Testament passages he knew and had carefully studied.
There you have it, in one chapter we find the first and only time that every member of one family is described as being “filled with the Holy Spirit”, and that is why this passage is so special. Here we have a description of what God points out for us in a Spirit-filled family. What we find is not what we would expect.
What does God point out that He notices, and is pleased by in this Spirit-filled family? Each detail written down in Luke was placed there by God, Luke was only the human author; but God chose what He wanted to be recorded, and guided every word of this book.
Here is the amazing lesson for us from these verses in Luke 1:
Living a Spirit-Filled Life, Useful to God is Not Easy.

King Hezekiah had a BIG problem. Sitting north of Jerusalem was a HUGE encampment of 185,000 fierce, ruthless, cruel, and merciless Assyrian soldiers.
The Assyrians had sent an ultimatum in a letter. Hezekiah had taken the letter, spread it before the Lord in the Temple, and went home and slept.
According to the ancient world’s logistics for armies of 690 soldiers per hectare, each soldier needed 156 square feet of space for a camp. So 185K Assyrians soldiers needed a minimum-sized camp of 1 square mile.
That dark night, God sent the Destroyer to quietly move across the one square mile camp of 185,000 sleeping soldiers and snuff out their lives.
Amazingly, not the servants, not the cooks, not the transportation teams—JUST the SOLDIERS. The others made it home to spread the news of the disaster.
So when Hezekiah woke up after a sound night’s sleep and walked up to look over the Broad wall of Jerusalem, he saw an amazing sight—one square mile of death. Tents, military gear, stockade, and supplies, and all the soldiers were dead.
That is the power of our God who watches individuals, listens to their words, weighs their hearts, and knows their deeds. He is the same One who we will each stand before at the BEMA Seat.
He misses nothing, knows everything, sees it all, and will play it all back for us in the not-too-distant future.

Persevering
Hope
Please turn back to the next Titus 2 element we are studying this morning. At the end of v. 2, Paul described the godly, older men of the church as having persevering hope. This last quality is actually part of the trio “faith, hope, and love” that show up in most of Paul’s letters. Paul said that a spiritually healthy life, an eternally useful life would often show “healthy faith, healthy love, and persevering hope”.
God says that when His grace energizes our lives we have three clear character qualities:
Sound in faith means that if we believe right, we’ll behave right.
Sound in love means that when doctrine is not wrapped in love is useless to God in His plan for Christ's church.
Sound in persevering hope means that we are willing to sacrifice the present for the promises of the future.
Paul told Titus that he was to teach believers how to “adorn” the doctrine of God. That is why Paul frequently introduces that sacred trio of “faith, hope, and love” to various New Testament assemblies. Even John at the end of the New Testament era emphasized those three truths that must be kept in balance..
As we grow in faith (sound doctrine) we must adorn it with hope and love.
When these three, sound faith, sound love, and persevering hope--operate in concert together, they result in a life, a marriage, a home, and a church filled with happiness, holiness and assurance. These three qualities present in a believer’s life constitute the evidence, the litmus test, of a true Christian.
Finishing Hopefully
In A Despairing World
The life lived in hope has always been one of the distinguishing qualities of God’s servants. Peter speaks of this quality at the end of his life in his first letter. Turn there with me to I Peter 1:3-13. Listen to the beautiful hope-filled life we are to live before a watching, and often despairing world:

Living a Spirit-Filled Life, Useful to God is Not Easy.
What does that mean? “Useful to God” means that God sees, honors, blesses, and rewards with endless honor that person.
Anything in our lives that is not pleasing to God will vanish away, turn to smoke & ashes, and be forgotten. Most people do not use God’s standard for significance, and therefore their lives will amount to nothing.
What’s interesting is that out of all the thousands of Levites serving in the Temple in the First Century, Zacharias is one of the only ones we know by name. So we have been given a special God-given insight.
Truth-1: God Knew Where to Find Zacharias
God does not require that we have a big, flashy, well-known life to be significant to Him.
God says that all that matters is: what He sees, what He thinks, and how He is pleased with our lives.
So as we read Luke we see this is not a flashy, outgoing couple. They are dutifully, behind the scenes in their lives. Zacharias & Elizabeth were just a tiny, almost insignificant part of a community of thousands of Levitical priests, grouped into 24 teams that took their turns on duty at the Temple of God.
Zacharias was one of 24,000 priests who served 2 weeks each year by rotation. As an aged man, it was a supreme honor given once in a lifetime to serve at the altar of incense.
The incense was offered daily before the morning sacrifice at about 9 AM, and after the evening sacrifice, about 3 PM in the afternoon. It was probably the evening offering that was assigned to Zacharias.
Application: God knows your address. You can be plain, unknown to most people in the world, never achieving public fame, live as an ordinary person, having a non-descript life: and still be living a Spirit-filled life, useful to God.
