[93] David Beckworth: no robust US economy in 2014 & Patrick Byrne talks Bitcoin
Our lead story: Greece now wants to issue its first long-term bond since being bailed out by the Eurozone and IMF almost four years ago. Greece hopes to raise $5 to 7 billion dollars by the end of 2014. Is this a signal of a recovery? Erin brings you the details.
For our interviews today, Erin brings you more from economist and market monetarist David Beckworth. He gives you his views on US 2014 macroeconomics, Fed policy, and Abenomics. In our second interview, Erin returns to our conversation with Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, and brings you his thoughts on taxing and regulation on Bitcoin. In light of recent IRS decisions, his responses are interesting. Take a look.
Finally in the Big Deal, Edward Harrison and Erin talk about the new Amazon Fire TV device that the company released today. What is Amazon doing? Edward gives his thoughts.

The fast food industry has become the cornerstone of the minimum wage battle. Considering McDonald’s is the face of the fast food industry, that positions the company at the forefront of that debate. This week, thousands of protesters rallied in front of the headquarters, demanding the company raise their pay to $15/hour. Interestingly, the pressure for a hike in the minimum wage is growing larger as the company’s sales continue to grow smaller. Boom Bust guest host Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Ameera is joined by RT correspondent Alexey Yaroshevsky, on the ground near the McDonald’s headquarters in Oakbrook, IL. Alexey tells us the main grievances the protesters are expressing and if McDonald’s can afford to raise wages.
After the break, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at Tuesday’s oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. As residents and officials enter day three of cleanup, the nearby beaches and fishing sites remain closed.
Afterwards, Erin is joined by Cate Long – partner at Puerto Rico Clearinghouse and former Reuters contributor. Cate tells us which states’ budgets concern her the most and gives us her take on if it’s equitable for a city to pay pension costs in full while paying only 1% to other creditors.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Edward Harrison continue the discussion on municipal finance, wages and the American economy.
