RBG Backlit Gameboy - part 1: Fixing Missing Vertical Lines and Removing LCD Reflective Film
Happy holidays to everyone, my gift to you is a three part series/tutorial on how to backlight, bivert, and program a digital RGB controller for the gameboy DMG.
In this first part I attempt to fix the missing vertical columns of pixels along the left side of the screen due to aging adhesive on the ribbon cable. Also in a nerve wracking couple of minutes I remove the rear reflective and polarizing filter layers so I can proceed with inverting and backlighting the LCD in the next part of this series.

I was contacted by Apeman about their new 2K dashcam and the timing was perfect as my current one has baked for the last two years in my car and was on its final legs. In this video we take a look at what ~$100 will net you in a dashcam in terms of features and recording quality. I was lucky enough to get a decent snow storm as well so I just had to test the timelapse functionality as well! Does it live up to the spec list? Watch to find out!

Akumaka reached out to me to see if I was interested in reviewing their new smart watch and since it's a thing I wear on my wrist daily I was keen to see if this model had any improvements over my Rogbid I've been daily driving. Let's check out what your ~$40 gets you.

So I was surfing the 'Bay when I came across a broken extreme green gameboy pocket auction going for much less than they normally go so I kept my eye on it and placed my bid at the last second and actually won. Even if it were irreparable I have spare boards that work that I could simply swap in so either way I was willing to take the risk. When it finally arrived I was in for a giant shock! In this video I test the system out and perform a full cleaning of the dirty handheld.

To start off, thanks to JLCPCB for sponsoring this video as well as providing pcbs to get the ball rolling on this project. JLCPCB Prototype for $2 (Any Color): https://jlcpcb.com
Additionally I'd like to thank Alfa Zeta once again for donating the electromechanical displays used in this project as well as their support of this project. Check them out: www.flipdots.com
About a month ago I did an unboxing of these super cool electromechanical seven segment displays for Alfa Zeta and have been working in tandem on two parts to make an open source, cheap and easy to use module that can be controlled by any arduino or microprocessor via a simple serial interface and command set. For more technical info check out the Hackaday.io project page here: https://hackaday.io/project/162065-serially-controlled-2-digit-flip-7-segment-module. I'm calling this project EasyFlip!
So in this video I assemble and demo my first prototype board and firmware. I've verified the communication layer of the software as fully working but there are other problems. As it turns out I made a very stupid mistake in the circuit while trying to be clever and cut down on parts and I/O. As explained, because of this I'll need to refine the circuitry and modify the firmware.
So I've learned from my mistake and am working on designing a version 2.0 pcb and tweaking the firmware to support the new schematic as well. The next video will chronicle the next version (and hopefully last, working iteration). Stay tuned!

I've reviewed quite a few EKSA headphones in the past and they consistently punch well above their price range. So when they reached out to see if I wanted to review their new telecom oriented set of earbuds I was interested, especially since my day job requires me to take quite a few web calls/meetings and as a plus I can use the s30 for media as well! Now these in contrast to most of EKSA's offerings are quite a bit more expensive so that will factor into my experience. I've heavily used the s30 for well over a month by now so here's my findings on what your ~$150 gets you.
A quick rundown of EKSAtelecom S30 features:
Open-Ear Design
99.9% VoicePure 4-Mic ENC Noise Cancellation
70+ Hour Working Time
TubeBass™ Technology
Bluetooth 5.3
IPX5 Water-Resistant
30m/99ft Wireless Connection
private mode

On ebay again like usual and I spotted this beautiful 20th anniversary netmd recorder for only $40 with most accessories included. The only issue is the seller, who appears to be a reseller of estate goods, states that it doesn't power on or charge, basically a paperweight. Externally it is in beautiful condition but then I spotted in the 4th or 5th pic the internal battery switch on the back was turned off. This was enough for me to risk buying it to see if I could get a high end sony unit for much cheaper than usual. So how did it turn out? Was I able to fix it? Watch to find out ...

Happy Friday the 13th everyone!!!
As my thrift store was having a labor day sale I was able to score this old beauty for only $1.50! In this video we do a teardown to see if we can figure out why it doesn't advance the clock. Hopefully we can fix it up and give it another few decades of use!
