The Scroll Contains the Plan of God for Earth’s Future: Most likely this scroll is the same scroll we see in Ezekiel 2:9-10 and Daniel 12:4. It refers to the plan of God to take back the kingdom of the Earth, temporarily taken over by Satan. Some call this scroll the title deed, but it has so much more to do with the actual plan of action to judge sin and end the rebellion. As we watch the scene of worship in Heaven, we have been studying the element of redemption. As we are hearing songs of worship that we will offer in the future, we are seeing the wonders of the beauty God has surrounded Himself with, in Heaven. Now skip down and look at the opening of chapter 6. This scroll has seven seals. When we see that scroll opened in chapter 6 it represents the unfolding of the plan for God’s wrath to start pouring out in three parts: through the seven seals (Rev. 6-8), then the seven trumpets (Rev. 8-14), and finally the seven bowls (Rev. 15-19). First, as each seal is loosed by Christ, the Lamb, the plan explodes into action. In Chapter 6 there are six seals opened, and in Chapter 8:1 the seventh seal opens to launch seven trumpets. Second, the seven trumpets which cover chapters 8-14, where the seventh trumpet sounds in 11:15 is the prelude to the final set of judgments known as the bowl judgments. Finally, the bowls of wrath get poured out starting in Rev. 15:7 as they are introduced, and these seven bowls initiate the final events before Christ’s Second Coming in power and glory in chapter 19, and His final acts consume all the rebels in chapter 20. But this sequence of seals, trumpets, and bowls always makes me wonder. How can Revelation swing from Heaven and worship to Earth and horribly destructive judgment? We can see the answer by understanding the explanations God has given. First, we can see twice mentioned collected prayers of the saints. See them mentioned in Rev. 5:8 and again in 8:3? Revelation shows us God, as he finally launches: The Answer to Centuries of Prayers For twenty centuries God’s servants have prayed obediently: “Thy Kingdom Come”. Now, all of those prayers, collected by God, in bowls at His feet, in v. 8 are scooped up and the wrath begins. But the mystery has always been: why does God wait? Jesus writes a list of commendations, one serious warning, and a promise, and sends it by messenger to the port of Ephesus. And the moment this messenger walked into the city, holding this letter from Jesus, the first thing he would have seen would not have been the bustling harbor teeming with boats, or the roads lined with exotic goods from all the trade routes to the east, but the largest building (not object like pyramids or Romans Roads) in the ancient world. Standing ten stories high and taking up an entire city block, the temple of Diana (or Artemis, in Greek) was completely covered and overlaid with pure gold. It stood gleaming in the sun directly in the center of the city, and it became #3 of the seven wonders of the ancient world. In and around Diana’s temple, prostitutes, both men, and women lured people in for unbridled immorality in the worship of Diana, a goddess of sex and fertility. Hundreds of temple prostitutes were always on the grounds to promote this unrestrained indulgence of the flesh. Ephesus was a magnet for not just the sexually enslaved, but it was also the center of the black arts, witchcraft, superstition, and all the powers of Satan. This third wonder of the ancient world was the center of everything that went on in the city, and standing for all to see was the huge, pornographic statue of Diana carved out of black stone. All of this fostered a culture of evil that promoted materialism, pride, occultism, and sensuality. With the demon worship going on in Ephesus, the “spiritual hosts of wickedness” were out in full force, shamelessly advertising everything that God hates. And this is where God had chosen to plant His most successful church. The Ephesian Church Jesus writes to was His greatest church, perhaps the greatest and most powerful church in church history Probably all the other six churches of the seven in Rev 2-3 were planted from Ephesus This is a 20-lesson course on the final book of the Bible. God is Absolutely Holy Surrounded by: Flaming Holy Angels, Quakes, and Smoke. First, notice the smoke. Our God is a consuming fire, so, each time the Holy Throne of God comes down to be revealed to us as humans, there is this sight of the smoke from that consuming fire. This is like the smoke from a furnace, that Abraham saw when God made a covenant with him in Genesis 15:7-18. This is what the three million Israelites saw in Exodus 19, as Mt. Sinai was “completely in smoke” and the smoke rose like from a “burning furnace”, shooting skyward. Second, notice the quaking. The whole temple shook as Isaiah saw the Lord in His glory in Isaiah 6:4 and heard the holiness of the Lord declared. At Mt. Sinai when the Lord came down to the top of the mountain to meet with Moses, the mountain quaked exceedingly (Ex. 19:18), as the Lord descended in fire. Third, notice the amazing, angelic creatures. In Isaiah 6:2 we meet some of God’s creations we only see here. They are called Seraphim, which means the “burning ones”. They seem to be part of the Throne Team which is always associated with carrying out God’s plans. When Isaiah sees how Holy God truly is, the very first response is an awareness of how unholy he is. Like Abraham in Genesis 15 and the Israelites in Exodus 19, Isaiah is smitten at his personal un-holiness and falls before the Lord asking for cleansing. In a similar manner in the New Testament: when Peter saw the Deity of Christ displayed, he fell on his face and confessed his need of cleansing (Luke 5:8). So first we see: The Big Picture: God is Absolutely Holy. From that flows for us: The Personal Application: regular confession and cleansing is needed. Look at Isaiah 6:6-7, just as Isaiah needed to be purged so we must be. God has explained to us what He desires from us. We need to bow daily in reverence to God and seek to be kept cleansed by Christ's work for us on the Cross. Part of each of our constant responsibilities is to confess our sins (I John 1:9) so that Christ can cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We are already forgiven once and for all (Hebrews 10:12), but we are each in need of constant cleansing. He Was Buried There are two amazing men that we find in the opening and closing pages of the Gospel by John. The first was Nicodemus who comes to Jesus by night and hears the greatest verse in the Bible which was spoken to him. Every time you hear or say John 3.16 you are getting the Gospel according to Jesus from that night when Nicodemus came seeking Him. The second was Joseph of Arimathea who comes from nowhere and rescues Christ's body from being destroyed or desecrated so that it could not be buried. He shows up on the scene with everything needed to fulfill ancient prophecies, uttered 600 years previously by Isaiah – a rich man, with a new tomb, close enough to get Jesus buried in before sundown (to handle another prophecy of 3 days and nights). The sheer magnitude of what these two men did in the plan of God is so often overlooked, and so we remember them tonight. Several lessons can be drawn from their lives: 1. Do what you can do. They didn’t preach, go on missionary journeys, or follow Jesus around. They prepared for Christ's burial. 2. Give what you can’t keep. They gave up their time, their future security, and their treasures. All of which are temporary whether we acknowledge it or not. 3. Gain what you can’t lose. Anything given to Christ lasts forever. Forever we will remember the borrowed Tomb and the faithfulness of these two men who risked everything for Someone they loved so dearly. The great defining passage in the Gospel is 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. Here, the Gospel is defined as the good news that -- • “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; • And that He was buried, • and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” We are examining these three vital elements of the Gospel. We have seen in the past weeks that there were many amazing, miraculous and profound details that God's Word records. We can say that Christ DIED for our sins according to the Scriptures.
