Theophany, Baptism of the Lord,. Baptism Delivers From Bondage
What does baptism do? For that matter, what is “salvation”? Both questions are answered by this hymn from the Royal hours of Theophany: Tone IV:
“The Trinity, our God, hath made Himself indivisibly manifest unto us; for the Father in a loud voice bore clear witness to His Son; the Spirit in the form of a dove came down from the heavens; while the Son bowed His immaculate head before the Forerunner, and being baptized, delivered us from bondage, for He is the Lover of mankind.” https://youtu.be/vwYfPhoyKIE ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwYfPhoyKIE

Bright Saturday is the culmination of a joyful week and, therefore, is somewhat bittersweet. On Saturday evening, we will close the Royal doors of the altar, which had been open all week. There are other practices of brightly that we will cease until the next year. Why do we close the Royal doors? It is because of a fundamental aspect of our human nature. We also talk extensively about the baptism of John and how it differs from Christian baptism. We touch on both of the readings for the day: John 3:22-33 and Acts 3:11-16. This homily was preached at St. John the Theologian mission in Hardeman County, Quanah, Texas

Timestamps:
0:02 - 0:34 An informal and totally true description of the priesthood.
0:34 - 1:25 Requirements and privileges of the catechumenate.
1:25 - 2:41 Regarding symbolism vs reality in our services, and particularly the prayers at the making of a catechumen. Examples: a priest blowing on a person or blessing a person with the sign of the cross, and the exorcism prayers.
2:41 - 3:48 A catechumen must be fasting in obedience to the mind of the church. And about personal and corporate obedience in things such as fasting, attending church services, etc.
3:48 Orthodox Christianity is completely different from the experience of a person from any Christian belief. And regarding the state of mind of deep humility and recognizing our darkness, and at the same time, experiencing God's light.
4:46 - 5:10 What is the point of baptism? To become good, not just be forgiven.
5:10 -6:46 You must learn to live rigorously.
5:28 - 6:31 You must have a prayer rule. Is it a sin to miss your prayer rule? That is not the right question.
6:31- 6:46 The Christian life IS intense, and requires discipline, but it is not "rule based."
6:46- 7:16 A Catechumen should not read religions text other than Orthodox texts, or worship in non-Orthodox churches.
7:16 - 11:00 Your struggle is to overcome the individualism that infects Western culture, and acquire the mind of the church.
8:53- 9:19 Why do we pray for the dead?
9:20 - 10:02 What about all those prayers to Mary, the Theotokos?
12:11 - 12:28 Do witnesses of a baptism or the prayers at the making of a catechumen have any obligations?

The Samaritan woman, whom Jesus Christ met at the well, became equal to the apostles Photini (Svetlana, Claire, Clara). She was not living a righteous life, but that is not the most important prerequisite for finding salvation. The most necessary thing is to have a heart that is able to open to God- with holy desire, honesty, humility and zeal. St. Photini demonstrates to us principal personality traits that are necessary for salvation. Her conversation with Christ and her actions thereafter are like a textbook teaching us how we should live. 2020-05-17 John 4:5-42

The second Sunday of Great Lent we read about the paralytic who was healed by Jesus after his companions let him down through the roof when Jesus was teaching. The most precious thing that we can possess in this world is ourselves! That is, we can control our thoughts.

The new martyr Theodore apostatized because of luxury, but later repented and then became a great martyr. Somehow, I juxtapose his life, which turned around because of a plague, with the beautiful children’s book “Pollyanna”, which features “the game” in which she found good in any situation no matter how bad it appeared. For Theodore, a terrible plague led him to repentance. Perhaps the war in Ukraine will lead some of us to repentance. Perhaps something else that looks terrible will bring us to repentance. There is always good in everything because our reaction can be good. I also encourage everyone to read the lives of the saint and defined saints that resonate with them and ask for their prayers. I explained why the new martyr Theodore is such a saint for me.
