I am Janet. - Soy Janet.
You are Sam. - Eres Sam.
He is a man. - Es un hombre.
She is a woman. - Es una mujer.
It is a dog.
Por ejemplo, en vez de decir ´Is she his wife?´, podemos preguntar ´Is it his wife?´.
Who´s that? - ¿Quién es (ésa)?
Is it his wife? - ¿Es su esposa?
En vez de preguntar ´Is he her husband?´, podemos decir ´Is it her husband?´.
Who´s that? - ¿Quién es (ése)?
Is it her husband? - ¿Es su esposo?
Y podemos usar it en vez de he y she para responder:
No, it isn´t. It´s his girl friend. - No. Es su novia.
Yes, it´s her husband. - Sí, es su esposa.
EN ´RESPUESTAS CORTAS´
Se utiliza it en ´respuestas cortas´ sustituyendo a las palabras this y that. Por ejemplo:
- Is this your computer? - ¿Es tu ordenador?
- No, it isn´t. It´s my television. - No. Es mi televisor.
Y nunca:
- No, this isn´t ...
- Is that your daughter? - ¿Es su/ tu hija?
- Yes, it is. - Sí.
Y nunca:
- Yes, that is. O Yes, she is.
- My name´s Erna Wood. - Me llamo Erna Wood.
- How do you spell Erna Wood?
- My name´s Erna Wood. - Me llamo Erna Wood.
- How do you spell it?

want + 'to infinitivo'
I want to go on holiday. - Quiero irme de vacaciones.
He wants to walk home. - (Él) quiere ir andando a casa.
She wants to have a shower. -- (Ella) quiere ducharse.
They want to stay at home.
do + want + 'to infinitivo´
Does she want to marry him? - ¿Quiere (ella) casarse con él?
Do you want to drive? - ¿Quieres conducir?
I don't want to watch TV. - No quiero ver la televisión.
He doesn't want to go to work -- (Él) no quiere ir a trabajar.
La misma construcción se utiliza con las palabras interrogativas what (qué), where (dónde), etc., para prequntar qué quiere hacer la gente, dónde quiere ir, etc. Fíjese en el orden de las palabras:
palabra interrogativa + do/does + sujeto + want + 'to infinitivo'
What do you want to do? - ¿Qué quieres hacer?
Where do you want to go? - ¿Dónde quieres ir?
Who does he want to see? - ¿A quién quiere ver?
When does she want to leave? -¿Cuándo quiere irse?
Why do they want to study?
I want to see the wine list. -- Quiero ver la carta de vinos.
Para ser más cortés se puede usar 'I would like...´ (contracción I'd like...) 'Me gustaría...'. El verbo like también va seguido por el infinitivo con to cuando precede a otro verbo:
would like + ´to infinitivo'
I would like to order now, please. - Me gustaría pedir ahora, por favor.
I´d like to see the menu, please. - Me gustaría ver el menú, por favor.
We'd like to sit near the window. - Nos gustaría sentarnos cerca de la ventana.

Hay diferencias de significado muy semejantes entre las palabras here/there y this/that.
Recuerde la diferencia de significado entre this y that (´este´ y´ese´). Las palabras this y that indican o se refieren a cosas que pueden estar ´aquí ´ (here) o ´allí ´ (there):
This is Mr Smith.
That is his wife.
there - Se refiere a cualquier otro lugar.
Por ejemplo:
- Mr Swift is here. His wife is there. - El Sr. Swift está aquí. Su esposa está allí.
- Shall I put the plant here?
- No, put it there. - No, ponla allí.
- Hello, is Wayne there? - Hola. ¿Está Wayne (allí)?
- No, he´s not here.
Sit here! - ¡Siéntate aquí!
Don´t go in there! - ¡No entres allí!
Shall I put the chair there? - ¿Puedo poner la silla aquí?
Is Wayne here? - ¿Está Wayne aquí?
La pronunciación de las palabras here y there es diferente, es decir, no riman a pesar de escribirse de manera similar.

Phronesis is an ancient Greek word for a type of wisdom or intelligence relevant to practical action, implying both good judgement and excellence of character and habits. Sometimes referred to as "practical virtue", phronesis was a common topic of discussion in ancient Greek philosophy.
Because of its practical character, when it is not simply translated by words meaning wisdom or intelligence, it is often translated as "practical wisdom". In this series of videos in June, I will sometimes use the expression "Practical Wisdom" in a more general way...
