Readers sound off on Palin lawsuit. Super Bowl entertainers and subway platforms
Bronx: I don’t know what the debate is about Sarah Palin’s meritless lawsuit against The New York Times. She had a website with crosshair targets marked on specific U.S. map locations. each of which identified the respective Congress member of that locale who voted in favor of Obamacare. Separately. Palin told her followers: “Don’t retreat! Reload!” Among the representatives in the targeted districts: then Rep. Gabby Giffords. victimized not once but twice by Palin’s website and rhetoric. The first time was severe vandalism of her office by Palin supporters. Giffords advised that “such rhetoric must stop before someone gets hurt.” only to find Palin leaving the website up and doubling down on her malicious rhetoric. Then an armed individual — who. it is true. was not motivated by the Palin map according to available evidence — opened fire in Tucson. nearly killing Giffords and killing a judge. a young girl and four others. Palin expeditiously shut down the website given its contents and that her rhetoric seemed highly incriminating and relevant. To date. she denies any such relevance to the matter. The question. then. especially for Palin. is this: If she did nothing wrong. if her website content and the rhetoric in question was legitimate. then why did she waste no time in shutting all of that down immediately after one of her targets was targeted in a deadly shooting? Michigan withdraws mask advisory. including for schools. as ‘worst of omicron surge is behind us’
Michigan is altering its indoor mask guidance. including in K 12 schools. to reflect the improving COVID 19 picture throughout the state. On Wednesday. Feb. 16. the state health department announced a withdrawal of its public health advisory on masking in indoor public settings. which was put in place in November. The advisory recommended all people wear a face mask indoors in public settings. regardless of vaccination status. In expiring the advisory. state officials are leaning on individuals. families and communities to assess their own risk for COVID 19 exposure and transmission. and to wear masks “when it makes sense.” “As we enter this recovery period. it’s not that we’re telling people not to mask.” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian. Michigan’s acting chief medical executive. “It’s that we’re saying broad mask recommendations are really a local decision. It really depends on local hotspots. local outbreaks.” Masks are still recommended for isolation and quarantine periods. and in congregate settings like long term care facilities. health care settings. correctional facilities and shelters. Additionally. masking requirements can be put in place by local health departments. organizations. businesses. event organizers. and/or school districts. Under the latest guidance. school districts and organizations should consider local conditions and work with their local health department to determine mask policies for school districts. public meetings and large events. according to state officials. Additionally. Michiganders should consider their individual and family members’ risk factors and vaccination status when making the personal decision whether to mask. Those with chronic illness or who are immunocompromised are at higher risk for poor outcomes from COVID and would benefit most from masking in indoor settings. according to the state. These risk factors may include age. medical conditions. and vaccination status. “This is good news for Michigan.” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a prepared statement. “While Michigan hasn’t had statewide mask policies since last June. this updated guidance will underscore that we are getting back to normal. Let’s keep working together to build on our momentum so we can keep our kids learning in person.” Michigan is reporting 2.195 new COVID cases over the last week. which is the lowest seven day average since mid September five months ago. Similarly. hospitalizations have been more than cut in half over the month. and the positive test rate has dripped from 17% a week ago to 10.5% over the last seven days. Upgrade to Winter Storm Warning for major southeast Michigan cities
The winter storm watch issued early this morning has been upgraded to a winter storm warning for some areas. meaning the likelihood of heavy snow is growing. Winter storm warning criteria at this time of mid winter is six inches or more of snow possible. or slightly lesser snow and some freezing rain ice accumulation. The winter storm warning area could have either of those weather scenarios. Right now one tenth to two tenths of an inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain is possible in the heavy snow area. If the ice accumulation does occur. it will be at the expense of a couple of inches of snow. Either way the weather goes. we are going to have dangerous driving conditions eventually Thursday. Eventually is an important word I want to emphasize. As I noted in my morning update on the snow and freezing rain forecast. the main period of heavy winter precipitation is slower than yesterday’s thought. The winter storm warning now goes into effect at 3 p.m. Thursday. showing the expected later timing of the most significant snow. The winter storm warning now also expires a little later at 3 a.m. Friday. The winter storm warning is in effect from the southwest Michigan border counties to Battle Creek. Jackson. Hillsdale. Coldwater. Adrian. Ann Arbor. the entire Detroit area. Oakland County and St. Clair County. The official snow forecast from the National Weather Service is four to eight inches of snow in the winter storm warning area. The warning area also can expect one tenth to two tenths of an inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain and sleet. A few of the best computer models show six to seven inches of snow will be common. An isolated nine inch amount is possible. The purple shaded area from Kalamazoo to Lansing to Flint to Sanilac County is a winter weather advisory for three to five inches of snow. The one important tend I want you to grasp is the delayed timing of the heaviest precipitation. There will be a round of lighter snow and brief freezing rain Thursday morning across all of the southern half of Lower Michigan. but the heavy snow will occur late in the afternoon and Thursday evening.

The University of Alabama is renaming a building after its first Black student. removing the name of a Klansman
(CNN)After a week of backlash. the University of Alabama System's Board of Trustees voted Friday to name a building after the school's first Black student instead of having her share the name with a Ku Klux Klan leader. The trustees reversed a February 3 decision to name the building Lucy Graves Hall after its first Black student and civil rights activist Autherine Lucy Foster and Bibb Graves. a former Alabama governor and a Ku Klux Klan leader. Students. faculty and community members cried out. saying it was wrong to recognize the legacy of these two people in one building. 'This has been a challenging time. The work group in making its recommendations certainly intended for that paired name to generate educational moments that can help us learn from our complex and rich history.' trustee emeritus Judge John England Jr. said at the special called Friday meeting. 'Somehow. the honoring of Autherine Lucy Foster sort of took the background and that's not what we wanted.' England said. 'We've heard enough from people whose opinion matter to us students. faculty. staff that we can do that in a better way than what we've done.' The working group for the board consulted with more than a dozen Alabama history scholars before suggesting the name of Lucy Graves Hall. the university system said in a news release. However. students and others on campus were not consulted. The...

San Francisco school board recall day arrives with 3 board members' futures at stake
SAN FRANCISCO – Voters in San Francisco head to the polls Tuesday for a recall election that is seen by many as a reckoning for the board of the San Francisco Unified School District. The rare special election takes aim at three board members. all Democrats. who've served long enough to be eligible to be recalled: Alison Collins. Gabriela Lopez and Faauuga Moliga. Recall supporters said these three. and indeed the entire board. have prioritized race over education through a series of blunders during the COVID 19 pandemic. 'They need to go because they're playing politics.' said Kit Lam. a recall organizer who gathered hundreds of signatures to qualify the recall. including from many first time voters. 'They don't care about our children's education.' The recall effort began more than a year ago while public schools remained closed even as San Francisco's private schools figured out how to reopen safely. and as city officials deemed it was safe for all kids to return to in person classes. Last year. the city attorney sued the school board over its failure to reopen. The pandemic saw student enrollment drop and the district's budget shortfall grow to $125 million. Amid the growing financial crisis. and with many students struggling with remote learning. the school board focused on renaming 44 school sites deemed to be offensive. including high schools named after Abraham...

Authorities found 6 year old girl missing since 2019 after receiving a tip different from any other information they had
(CNN)Authorities had been searching more than two years for Paislee Shultis. a 4 year old reported missing from her legal guardian in Cayuga Heights in upstate New York. without any luck. But a new piece of information turned the entire investigation around. police said. leading them straight to a place they long suspected as her location but could never prove: the home of Paislee's biological parents. 'This tip was fresh. it was factual. The information provided was corroborated.' Saugerties Police Department Chief Joseph Sinagra told CNN's Mark Morales. Paislee. now 6. was found alive Monday hidden underneath a staircase with her biological mother. The child has been returned to her legal guardian and older sister. police said. and her biological parents and grandfather were arrested. While authorities had been to the home on numerous occasions. they lacked the evidence needed to conduct a full search of the property. 'We can't execute a search warrant or act on hearsay. we have to act on factual information. And on this particular day. on February 14. we obtained factual information. And that's what made it so much different.' Sinagra said. Police have declined to share what the tip specifically was or from whom it came. But it proved to be the key. allowing authorities to gain legal access to the home and ultimately find Paislee. Saugerties is roughly 160 miles east of Cayuga Heights and the location where Paislee was ultimately found. Authorities frequently visited the home. working on tips received about her possible whereabouts. Sinagra said. but on most occasions officers were met with irritation. Kimberly Cooper and Kirk Shultis Jr.. Paislee's noncustodial parents. would accuse police of 'harassing' and 'badgering' them and 'insisting we should be out looking for Paislee.' Sinagra said. 'Very few occasions were we actually permitted into the residence. and when the officers were permitted in. it was limited access. They were never allowed into the basement. they were never allowed into any of the bedroom areas.' Sinagra said. 'And a number of times. we were told. just leave. get off my property. And we have to abide by that. That's a Fourth Amendment right. We don't have a right to search or seize on anybody's property unless we have the legal authority to do so.' the chief said. Officers arrived outside the house about 4 p.m. to ensure no one left. Police then executed the warrant a little after 8 p.m.. the chief said. The homeowner denied knowing the girl's whereabouts. saying he had not seen her since she was reported missing in 2019. For the first time. detectives were able to search every room in the house and go t
