Ep. 5852 - Andrew Cockburn: How the Media Failed Julian Assange - 2/23/23
Andrew Cockburn joined Scott on Antiwar Radio to talk about Julian Assange. Cockburn wrote an article for Harper’s Magazine about the hypocrisy of mainstream journalists in their refusal to stand up for the condemned publisher of government secrets. After a quick rundown of who Assange is, why he’s important and where he is now, Cockburn and Scott discuss that Harper’s article.
Robert Pape, the director of the University of Chicago Project on Security and Terrorism, discusses why the answers to the Paris terrorism attack can be found in Western intervention in Syria and Iraq.

Journalist Alice Speri explains what the Israeli justice system is like for Palestinians who resist Israel’s soldiers and protest its illegal settlements. Instead of the usual court system, Palestinians are tried in what amount to military courts, often after grueling interrogations to extract confessions. Defendants, including hundreds of minors, are frequently convicted on the basis of these confessions alone, which can turn out to have been fabricated under duress. Unfortunately, American support for Israel only makes the problem worse, since the Israeli government knows there will be little pushback if the U.S. doesn’t lead the charge.
Alice Speri writes about justice, immigration, and civil rights for the Intercept. Follow her on Twitter @alicesperi.

Claire Manera from Médecins Sans Frontières returns to the show to discuss the cholera epidemic in Yemen, which has somehow gotten much worse. When Manera was on the show less than two months ago there were an estimated 30,000 cholera cases; today there are more than 300,000. So many people are sick that they aren’t able to get to the hospital and many are dying in their homes without the critical care they need. Manera explains how cholera spreads and why the Saudi-U.S. war in Yemen has exasperated the impoverished conditions. The epidemic has gotten so bad, particularly among children, that in some cases patients die within just a few hours of contracting the disease. The case fatality rate is growing as the disease spreads rapidly and many people can’t get transport to hospitals. Tragically Manera expects the upcoming rainy season to make the dire situation even worse. Finally, Manera explains how people can help Doctors Without Borders in Yemen, including by helping to provide chlorine and saline.
Claire Manera is the coordinator of Médecins Sans Frontières in Yemen.

Brendan O’Neill, editor of Spiked Online, discusses how foreign intervention ruined the genuine Syrian popular protests by discouraging a peaceful settlement with the government; the US’s double standard on which Middle Eastern governments are repressive; and why the Syrian conflict could become worse and more widespread than Lebanon’s 15 year civil war.

Scott interviews former CIA Officer John Kiriakou about a recent article he wrote. Kiriakou was personally involved in the 2002 capture of Abu Zubaydah in Pakistan. At the time, the CIA believed Zubaydah to be Al Qaeda’s third highest-ranking member. In truth, he was simply a logistician. Still, the Bush Administration used Zubaydah to make it look like dangerous terrorists were being captured and were handing over information thanks to “enhanced interrogation techniques.” Scott and Kiriakou observe that the Americans executed Japanese soldiers after WWII for using those very same techniques on American POWs. Kiriakou details the torture that Abu Zubaydah has been put through since his capture, all without a single charge being brought against him. Scott and Kiriakou also discuss other victims of the torture program, some of whom were killed without even being charged. Finally, Kiriakou explains the legal action Zubaydah is attempting to take against certain CIA contractors.

John Glaser, Assistant Editor at Antiwar.com, discusses the government’s premature bragging about foiling another underwear bomber terrorist plot – which became embarrassing when news broke about the bomber’s CIA/Saudi connection; Hillary Clinton’s well-founded doubts about arming Syria’s rebellion, whose ranks include al-Qaeda members and suicide bombers; why a “safe zone” in Syria is about as stupid as the “no fly zone” in Libya – and just as sure to start a larger war; the media’s disinterest in Libya since Gaddafi’s death and “mission accomplished,” even though human rights violations abound; the continued crackdown against peaceful protesters in Bahrain, though not even Al Jazeera finds it newsworthy; and how the US’s Middle East policy is geared toward maintaining a regional foothold and containing Iran, not exporting democracy.

Seymour Hersh, award winning investigative reporter for The New Yorker magazine., discusses his article “Iran and the Bomb: How real is the nuclear threat;” the lack of evidence for Iran’s interest in nuclear weapons after 2003, despite extensive satellite and covert surveillance (and even before then, the idea was to counter an Iraqi nuclear weapon, not threaten Israel or the US); how the 2011 NIE reinforces the 2007 assessment, and makes the harsh sanctions on Iran look even more indefensible; Obama’s acute isolation within the White House echo chamber; and some sane advice from retired ambassador Thomas Pickering: stop hectoring Iran about a non-existent nuclear weapons program and negotiate like grown-ups.

Jon Schwarz, a writer for The Intercept, discusses President Trump’s executive order restricting immigration and why most Americans are understandably confused about why “Muslims hate us,” since politicians and the media completely avoid making any link between decades of US invasion, occupation, and sanction of the Middle East and the unavoidable terrorism blowback such a foreign policy generates.
