Welcome to my eleventh Let's Build series featuring Ruby on Rails. This installment, once again, focuses on accepting payments using Ruby on Rails as a web application framework. We partner Ruby on Rails with Stripe to create a subscription based SaaS model for a book library application.
What's new in this build?
========================
* Rails 5.2 makes an appearance
* We use ActiveStorage which comes new with Rails 5.2. No longer do we require third-party gems like PaperClip or Carrierwave.
* New encrypted secrets which make managing any environment variables or keys way easier. You can commit these to version control without fear thanks to the encrypted quality
* Stripe Billing - Stripe recently released a new model around their subscription products. Within Stripe Billing you can define overlying products which have associated plans. It's a nicer way to bundle whatever it is you sell but still be able to sell things in different manners i.e. Flat rates, Multiple Plans, Per seat, Usage-based, and Flat rate + overage.
The Book Library application
=========================
The application is a simple book application that allows a user to add and remove books from their library. These books can be downloaded for reading once a user is subscribed. Accessing a library is only possible if a user is subscribed. This app differs than previous apps where a user must pay before making an account.
A user is presented with buttons for adding a book to their library. As you can guess, to do this action a user first needs an account. Upon clicking the "add to library" button a public facing user (someone with no account) is redirected to a signup page of which we implement using the Devise gem.
A nice callback function from Devise allows us to redirect a user upon successfully signing up. In this case, we redirect a user to a pricing page which features three plans to choose from. Each plan has its own parameters associated with it. Upon clicking the "subscribe" button on any of the tiers, the user is redirected to a payment page carrying over the necessary parameters to hook into Stripe with.
What seems like a simple app carries some logic and weight to cover all our tracks. The application is far from complete but you can, however, extend this to be much more however you like.
I ran out of time but one obvious area to extend this app is to save what plan a user has subscribed to. This can be done at the time they create a subscription. From there you can query different places in your app to show and hide specific features based on their plan type.

Welcome to the next installment to my Let's Build: With JavaScript series. This tutorial teaches you how to create, customize, and manipulate an HTML5 video player using vanilla JavaScript.
I'll be using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to accomplish this task which is a bit more advanced than the previous installments in this series.
I got the initial idea for manipulating an HTML5 Video element from Wes Bos who did a very similar video tutorial in is JavaScript 30 course. I highly recommend giving his course a go as it teaches you modern tips and tricks for JavaScript workflow.
Much of the credit for the concept and code structure goes to Wes on this one. I wanted to take a stab at doing something similar with my own flair. I used different styles, naming conventions, and more to accomplish what you see on the final CodePen (linked on the blog post below).

Welcome to another installment of my Let's Build: With Ruby on Rails series. This series focuses on building a marketplace application using Stripe Connect. Users can sign up, purchase, and sell their own goods and services while the application takes a percentage of each transaction.
Our fictitious marketplace app is called Back My Idea. Back my Idea is an app similar to GoFundMe and Kickstarter where users can crowdsource/fund their way to building their next big idea. Entrepreneurs/Designers/Developers can pitch their concept of an app and ask for donations to help fund their process of building it.

Welcome to the next installment of my Let’s Build series featuring Ruby on Rails. In this span of six videos, I’ll walk you through the concept of building an eCommerce music shop in a Rails environment.
If you have followed my previous builds, I stem some ideas from those as well as establish some new ideas and techniques. Much of what is discussed I’ve covered before but there are some new concepts such as database seeding and session parameters I dive into in this series.
What’s the app?
=======
This series will involve creating a small start to an e-commerce application with user authentication. The application of which I call “Flanger” will revolve around selling and purchasing musical instruments.
The app will use a series of models to formulate both the cart and items of which are for sale. Along the way, we will craft some handy helpers that perform calculations to total the items within our cart as well as remember who a user is if that user adds an item to a cart without being logged in.
A user who has an account can post instruments for sale.
What won’t we be covering?
=======
Building a complete e-commerce application is quite a challenge. Often times you need user authentication, tons of options for listing items for sale, a solution for shopping carts, and of course payment options. Accepting payments is a topic I plan to cover in the future but for now, I am omitting this from the app for the sake of time and headache! If you would like to extend this app further you are more than welcome to. I personally use Stripe on other apps and have found great success with integrating it.

I not longer utilize WYSIWYG editors after learning markdown and I'm perfectly okay with that :)

Why learn markdown?
============
Markdown is a lightweight solution to formatting content that gets generated to HTML. Any web page in existence is created with HTML in the end. If you need to author a blog post, a page full of content, a book, or even documentation you can do it all with markdown.
What's even better is that there are no autoformatting issues that some applications try to "make your life easier" with. In this video, I mentioned how Microsoft Word does a terrible job at copying and pasting text. If the text has any formatting whatsoever, Word tries its hardest to maintain that formatting. This feature alone makes me cringe.
Is Word all that bad? Not at all, but it is bloated with features, many of which I'll never utilize. Rather than work around those problems I sought to learn markdown to author content in the simplest way I could.
Markdown can be written using any type of application. Ideally, a markdown editor is a good choice to author inside simply because many editors offer syntax highlighting as well as a preview of the content in real time.
Key Benefits:
+ Lean language - There's little to learn and it's quick to pick up
+ Many FREE markdown editors to choose from
+ If you build, design, and or utilize websites markdown has a place in your arsenal.
+ Version control depends on Markdown for documentation. If you've ever visited a Github repo of some sort and read about it, you can thank markdown for that extra information as well as the author.

When I start most projects I like to utilize some build tools to make the code more optimized as well as my workflow.
Part 14 walks you through the folder structure of our new Kirby installation as well as the process of setting up a build tools workflow. I'll create a Gulpfile and within it, I use a variety of tasks that run in the background while I work. These tasks include:
+ Compiling Sass into CSS
+ Compiling, Minifying, and Uglifying JavaScript files into one main file
+ Optimizing images
+ Serving the site to a localhost via BrowserSync - This results in automatic browser refreshes as the code is changed.
Installing Gulp and some extended plugins is a must to get our development environment up to spec. I like to use Yarn but you can also use npm. It really jut boils down to preference but I have found Yarn to be a little faster when it comes to downloading new plugins.
My package list contains the following plugins:

Building a blog with comments using Ruby on Rails is a foundational exercise I went through to learn more about the framework. Working together, both Ruby and Rails lend us a hand to generate a fairly simple MVC pattern built on top of a CRUD approach when working with dynamic data.

### Kicking things off with a blog
To easily demonstrate the principles of working with Ruby on Rails I chose to build a basic blog. Each blog post will be able to be created, read, edited, and deleted. There will also be comments associated with each individual blog post. Comments will be able to be created and deleted.
With Ruby on Rails, the possibilities are pretty endless in terms of what you can build. I'm sure new features and improvements to our blog are easy to spot as I guide you through the process of building it. My goal was to ease newcomers into the conventions, methods, and code patterns that helped me best when I first dove in. I hope you too can benefit.
Ultimately, the point of this tutorial and video is to help anyone new to the framework understand how it operates as well as the necessary conventions required to create a blog using Ruby on Rails. I touch on things such as routing, controllers, views, models, migrations, relations, and more. For this project, we make use of a few `gems` of which help make my life a bit easier as I build out applications. You can find out more about those below.
