Bodycam Footage Of a Man Disarming And Assaulting Officers During An Arrest

Ogden, Utah — The Ogden Police Department released bodycam footage of a man disarming and assaulting officers during an arrest on May 29. The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Dana Lydell Smith of Clearfield. On on May 29, 2022 shortly before 8:00 AM Ogden City Police Officers and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the area of 3500 Wall Ave. Multiple callers were reporting that a male suspect had punched a pregnant female in the face. The victim was reported to be bleeding from the nose and mouth, and the suspect leaving the area on foot. The suspect was reported to be walking towards a business located in the 3600 block of Wall Ave, and was located by responding uniformed officers at that location. When the first officer made contact with Smith, he ran, and the officer chased him on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, the officers attempted to take Smith into custody.
During the attempt, you can see the officers on the ground where one officer under Smith is actively attempting to protect his firearm from being taken. At one point Smith managed to release the firearm from the holster as the officer continued to maintain some level of control over Smith's arm and gun, keeping it between him and the ground and preventing Smith from taking his own life or firing at the officers. In the video, you can hear an audible gunshot. The gun was fired one time and neither Smith nor the officer were struck. Following the gunshot, Officers utilized a trier to effectively take Smith into custody. Smith was transported to a local hospital for evaluation after which he was booked into the Weber County Jail for the following charges: Assault on a Police Officer, Disarming a Police Officer, Failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer, Interfering with a Police Officer, Failure to disclose identity, Felony discharge of a firearm. Smith has an extensive felonious criminal history and was on felony probation with Adult Probation and Parole at the time of this incident.

Thornton, Colorado — On September 5th, 2022, at approximately 7:30 AM, officers were dispatched to the 8500 block of I-25 to check the well-being of a male party who was walking in traffic. Multiple people had called 9-1-1 to report that the male was causing cars on the highway to swerve. One caller stated she had almost hit the male with her car.
When they arrived, officers located a 29-year-old male, identified as 29-year-old Darylray Lopez, and attempted to talk to him in the 8500 block of northbound I-25. During the interaction, Lopez produced a knife, charged at an officer, and was shot by that Thornton PD officer. Lopez was transported to an area hospital where he later died. No officers or other people were injured in this incident.

William Porubsky, 30, tried to steal a Stow police vehicle, grab an officer’s stun gun then tackled Patrol Officer Robert Molody before he was fatally shot, according to police. This, after Stow P.D. was called to Meadowbrook Blvd. on Sept. 3 for a suspicious male knocking on a door, asking for cigarettes and to call his daughter. Stow P.D. Patrol Officer Robert Molody arrived on scene and transported William Porubsky, also known as “Billy” to Akron's Haven of Rest - because he didn’t want to go back to a female friend’s home in Ravenna. Outside of Haven of Rest, Porubsky refused to exit the vehicle. Body camera video released Thursday afternoon shows Patrol Officer Robert Molody attempting to get Porubsky to exit his Stow Police vehicle, and walk into the Haven of Rest facility. Porubsky refused, arguing that he was not at the right place, at Haven of Rest.
Officer Molody requested assistance from Akron Police. Several moments went by before Officer Molody pulled his stun gun and pointed it at Porubsky while waiting for Akron Police to arrive. Porubsky continued refusing compliance with Officer Molody's orders to either go sit on the curb, or walk with him over to the facility’s door. William Porubsky then attempts to steal Officer Molody's police vehicle. The driver’s door was locked. Porubsky then attempted to grab the officer’s stun gun , and was stunned in return. Porubsky tackled Officer Molody to the ground. After several seconds of struggling, two shots are fired. Officer Molody calls in “shots fired” and requests and ambulance. He tells dispatch two shots were fired and that he couldn’t see because the suspect knocked off his glasses. Porubsky was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Los Angeles, California — On January 5, 2020, around 1:00 a.m., officers assigned to Northeast Area patrol were in the area of Griffin and Avenue 43. The officers initiated a narcotics investigative stop on a male, later identified as Julio Rodriguez. Rodriguez then ran from the officers who pursued him on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, Rodriguez produced a handgun, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Rodriguez was not struck by gunfire and was taken into custody. Rodriguez was arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer. No officers were injured during this incident. A 9mm caliber firearm was recovered at scene. LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the scene investigation.

Edison, New Jersey — The Attorney General’s Office released video footage from three body-worn cameras related to a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on April 12, 2022, in Edison, N.J. The decedent has been identified as Merrill Rambarose, 49, of Edison. The officers who fired their service weapons at Rambarose have been identified as Officer Daniel Bradley and Officer Joseph Elqumos of the Edison Police Department.
According to the preliminary investigation, uniformed officers of the Edison Police Department responded to a 911 call made shortly after 3:45 p.m. reporting a male threatening an individual with an axe on Judson Street in Edison, N.J. When officers arrived, they attempted to speak to Rambarose on his balcony. Rambarose then went inside his apartment and emerged moments later armed with a short-handled axe. Officers ordered him to back up and drop the weapon.
He did not comply with the officers’ commands and instead charged towards the officers with the axe in his hand. At this time, Officers Elquomos and Bradley both fired their weapons, fatally wounding Rambarose. An axe was recovered near Rambarose. Officers and emergency medical personnel rendered first aid to Rambarose, who was pronounced deceased on scene via telemetry at 4:41 p.m.

Farmington, Utah — On March 1, 2023, at approximately 3:22pm, a Farmington Police officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle which had an illegitimate license plate. The driver of the vehicle pulled into a parking stall at the US Post Office located at 145 East State Street. Body-worn camera shows that the driver rolled the window of the vehicle down only a few inches and refused to provide identification or cooperate with the officer in any way. The driver asserted his independence from the laws of the land as well as his belief that he was not required to provide information to the officer, nor was he required to cooperate. The initial officer called for assistance and continued efforts to provide the driver with information and options, but to no avail. A supervisor, and two officers, one with a trainee assigned to him, responded to assist. The driver was ultimately identified as 25-year-old Chase Allan.
Officers exhausted multiple further attempts to persuade Allan to cooperate and ordered him to exit the vehicle. When Allan still refused to exit the vehicle, an officer opened the door to the car and another officer attempted to remove Allan from the vehicle. At that time an observing officer yelled out the words “gun, gun, gun!” A struggle, which appeared to last only seconds, ensued and gun shots could be heard. Officers secured Allan and began rendering aid to him. A holster was found on Allan's right hip, as well as a gun on the floor of the driver side of the car. Allan was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. Police have not alleged Allan fired a gun during the confrontation. Allan’s family has sharply criticized the department and alleged their loved one died in a “brutal murder” while Allan sat in his car “likely terrified,” according to reports. Allan’s relatives also claimed the police were “stonewalling” them and didn’t notify them of Chase’s death, they reportedly found out through the media.

Fort Collins, Colorado — On July 12, 2022, at approximately 10:32 p.m., Deputy Jeffrey Kaley with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (driving a marked patrol K9 vehicle) observed a silver Ford Escape speeding northbound on Timberline Road at Drake Road at what he estimated to be 90 MPH (in a 40 MPH zone). 23-year-old Bryan Erdbruegger was later identified as the driver and only occupant of the Ford Escape. Deputy Kaley attempted to contact the vehicle as it continued north on Timberline Road and then turned east onto Prospect Road. Deputy Kaley activated his emergency lights and Erdbruegger accelerated. Deputy Kaley aired that he was in pursuit of the vehicle traveling eastbound on Prospect Road at 70 MPH. Shortly after, Erdbruegger pulled over on Prospect Road, east of Specht Point Road. Deputy Kaley initiated a high-risk traffic stop, positioning himself behind his driver's side door, drew his service weapon, and began issuing verbal commands for Erdbruegger to stay in his car and show his hands.
Deputy Aaron Horwitz (in a marked patrol vehicle) responded to the location to provide cover. Bodycam footage shows that Erdbruegger opened his driver's side door, produced a handgun, and began to rapidly fire at Deputy Kaley. In response, Deputy Kaley returned fire. Deputy Horwitz, who arrived on scene just as Erdbruegger started shooting, also returned fire in response to Erdbruegger's shots. Evidence collected at the scene indicates that Erdbruegger was struck by the initial volley from the deputies, but the injuries sustained at this point did not stop his offensive. Erdbruegger reloaded his weapon, fired additional shots, and then advanced towards Deputy Kaley while still holding the gun. Deputy Kaley's firearm was out of ammunition, and he was unable to reload as Erdbruegger advanced. A physical struggle for Erdbruegger's firearm, later determined to be a Glock 43x, ensued between Deputy Kaley and Erdbruegger.
Deputy Kaley was able to push Erdbruegger back as Erdbruegger fired a single shot while still near Deputy Kaley. Erdbruegger initially retreated towards his vehicle and then turned back toward the deputies and began to raise his gun towards the deputies. Deputy Horwitz, having just reloaded his weapon, fired repeatedly, striking Erdbruegger and causing him to fall to the ground. Additional cover units arrived, and deputies rendered medical aid. Erdbruegger was transported to the hospital by ambulance. During transport, Erdbruegger spit at LCSO Deputy Cody Armstrong and continued to protest medical treatment. CIRT investigators recovered 17 casings (brass) fired by Erdbruegger and recovered 40 total casings (silver) fired by the deputies. At the hospital it was determined that Erdbruegger was struck four times (stomach, left thigh, neck, top of head) by shots fired by the deputies. Erdbruegger pleaded guilty to attempted murder, for which 8th Judicial District Court Judge Juan Villaseñor sentenced him to 34 years in prison during an August hearing.

A 49-year-old man is in custody after he crashed into another car, threatened the other driver and fled from police near Moxee. It happened around 9:30 Saturday morning. Michael Roll is accused of running a stop sign on Beaudry Road and hitting another driver on Beauchene Road. The affidavit says Roll became aggressive when the victim tried to talk to him and write down his license plate number.
Court records say he yelled racial slurs at the victim and grabbed a metal piece of molding, holding it in a swinging position. The affidavit says Roll then fled from police when they arrived to the scene. Documents say he reached speeds near 100 miles per hour and was arrested after flipping the car and crashing into a fence in the 4300 block of Thorp Road. He faces charges of assault, hit and run, eluding and driving with a suspended license.

The Tulsa Police Department has released video of a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred last month. Police shot and killed William Frost Jr. Oct. 21 at the intersection of Admiral and South Utica Avenue. Officers said Frost, a veteran, was holding a knife and was shot after he refused to follow commands. Police said he was tased more than once before he was shot. “We had to do our job, and unfortunately in this instance, our job was to take fatal action," Homicide Sgt. Dave Walker said in October. "But we tried many things before we came to that point." The department identified the two officers involved in the shooting as 34-year-old Jim Brill and 29-year-old Lance Bond. Brill and Bond have been with the department for five years and four years, respectively.

Sandy, Utah — On November 9, 2023, at 7:30 a.m. the Sandy Police Department said the unidentified 16-year-old stole a U.S. Army van from an Army recruiting building on 9400 South in Sandy. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle in South Jordan, but the suspect fled, and officers did not pursue. Hours later, a person called 9-1-1 and reported a teenager driving a U.S. Army van through the neighborhood and asking for gas. officers tried to stop the vehicle again. At that moment, officers found the teen followed him through Sandy, unsuccessfully trying tire spikes at a few locations to stop him.
On Monroe Street, an officer approached the driver, yelling, “Get out of the car now! Get out of the car now! Get out of the car now!” Police said the suspect backed up, made a U-Turn and started driving into oncoming traffic before hitting a motorcyclist who was severely injured. Two officers then followed the teen suspect into a dead-end area. Officers then attempted to block the suspect’s escape as he turned the vehicle around. The driver of the van then veered toward an officer and the officer opened fire in an attempt to stop the vehicle, wounding the driver. The driver stopped the vehicle after bumping into a police vehicle. Officers are seen removing the teen from the van and laying him on the ground. The teen was transported to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.
