The High Bitcoin and Ethereum Correlation With Wall Street Continues. Bitcoin and most altcoins started to regain traction in March. BTC alone spiked to nearly $50,000 after slipping below $35,000 six weeks earlier. The US stock market was in a similar position prior to March but peaked at the end of it. The correlation between BTC and ETH and the three most prominent US stock market indexes has increased to multi-month highs. At the same time, gold, traditionally regarded as a safe haven asset with little-to-no positive correlation with riskier options like stocks and crypto, peaked in early March but has also declined heavily since then.
ETH Price Analysis: Warning Signs for Ethereum as Bears Push Below $2,000. By Grizzly, Grizzly.com will be featured in a weekly Travel Snapshots gallery. Visit CNN.com/Travel next Thursday for a new gallery of snapshots. ETH is moving downward inside a falling wedge (in yellow) on the daily time frame. It is important to note that this wedge bottom is aligned with the horizontal support level of $1700 (in green), which can be a potential trend reversal point. If the bulls can defend the green zone, the price will be more likely to move towards the static resistance at $2450. ETH is trading on dynamic support (in green) that has prevented further drops in price four times in the past. The main concern is that the bears have managed to make an unconfirmed break and appear to be in control of the situation. On the other hand, horizontal support at 0.065 (in orange) can also be considered a level to withstand the increasing bearish momentum.
FTX US Launches Stock Trading for Select Users. FTX Stocks will enable users to trade and invest in hundreds of US exchange-listed securities, such as common stocks and exchange-traded funds. Stock trading will be commission-free, and FTX US will not receive any payment for order flow. The main idea is to offer every investing service under the sun for its users. FTX US made a formal request with the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to modify its existing non-intermediated model for cryptocurrency derivatives, and allow the platform to circumvent the financial companies that currently enable such trades. The authorities are currently reviewing the application.

The Treasury Department announced sanctions against BitRiver, prohibiting it from having business relations with US citizens. BitRiver argued that it is a 100% private company with no affiliated interest with the Russian government. The Russian mining giant called the action by US authorities “irresponsible. IMF warned that Russia could use cryptocurrencies to boost their mining industry to evade sanctions. Binance CEO CZ said in an interview last month that nobody smart would choose to do that because it is too traceable.
Nomura Launches Over-the-Counter Bitcoin Derivatives. Nomura's over-the-counter bitcoin futures and options will be available to institutional clients. They will be non-deliverable and have to be settled in cash. Nomura to launch more derivatives related to bitcoin. Demand from institutional and private investors for such services has been growing. Nomura expects the sector to mature over time and become more regulated. Nomura became the first crypto custody bank through a new venture called Komainu in May 2018. It partnered with crypto security and infrastructure solution provider Ledger and bitcoin-specialist investment manager Global Advisors. The move was expected to unlock institutional investors’ interest in digital assets.

Crypto exchange Bitpanda introduces staking on 11 cryptocurrencies. European crypto-trading platform Bitpanda has now launched the possibility to earn and generate yield on selected cryptocurrencies. Staking is a way of earning rewards for putting certain cryptocurrencies to work. With no warm-up period, users earn from the instant they choose to stake their crypto. At launch, eleven cryptocurrencies will be available for staking: ADA, TRX, XTZ, SOL, MATIC, ATOM, DOT, GRT, KSM, NEAR, and LUNA; more staking assets will be added.
Solana-built DeFi app Jet Protocol transitions into DAO to enable on-chain governance. JetGovern is a new mechanism to govern the platform in an effective and decentralized manner. Incorporating both on-chain and off-chain governance structures, JetGovern ensures trustless, secure, and effective consensus-building process. On-chain governance employs voting mechanisms on the blockchain through the JET token which is used to represent the user’s stake and confer voting rights. Alan Howard’s Crypto Company Bags $70M in a Funding Round Led by Barclays and Goldman. Goldman Sachs' investment in Elwood Technologies is the first time the company has sourced outside financing and brought the company’s valuation to $500 million. The fundraising event saw contributions from several other notable investors, including German bank Commerzbank, venture capitalist Dawn Capital, and Mike Novogratz's Galaxy Digital. Elwood is optimistic that traditional financial institutions, including hedge funds and banks, will continue to maintain a strong interest in investing in the crypto space. Elwood's investment round was already in motion before the latest black swan event shredded about 15% from the global crypto market cap.
Binance Seeks to Strengthen its Legal Team. Majority of open positions are with Binance Holdings Ltd., the company responsible for all firm activities outside of the US. At the time of writing, two positions in the legal division at Binance US are taking applications. The value of all digital assets has taken a tumble of over $500 billion since the start of May alone. Many crypto exchanges are making a concerted effort to increase regulatory oversight that could prevent future tomfoolery.
European Union Could Start Testing a CBDC in 2023, ECB Executive Says. Panetta said the digital euro could boost the European economy when used as legal tender among all EU members. He also noted that the ECB and other institutions will help stimulate adoption through various tactics, including a heavy advertising campaign. Panetta said the digital euro could help preserve confidence in fiat money by helping to maintain its role as a monetary anchor in the digital age. He said stablecoins are vulnerable and have no guarantee to be redeemable at any given time.

The world’s largest crypto exchange suspended LUNA and UST spot trading shortly after doing so to the LUNA coin-margined perpetual contracts. The latter, being an algorithmic stablecoin, essentially allowed users to profit by arbitraging it against LUNA ever since it started to de-peg from the USD.

Elon Musk informed that his acquisition of Twitter had been delayed because of issues related to fake accounts and scams on the popular social medial platform. Musk updated on May 13 that the deal has been put “temporarily on hold pending details supporting” this claim. His buyout offer, worth approximately $44 billion, was accepted in late April. Peter Schiff, one of the most vocal BTC critics, was quick to comment on Musk’s post, suggesting that the billionaire never actually intended to buy Twitter.
FTX’s Sam Bankman-Fried Buys 7.6% Stake in Robinhood, HOOD Surges 23%. Bankman-Fried bought a stake in Robinhood because he regards it as an “attractive investment. Robinhood, through its communications team, echoed this statement in a tweet. Robinhood decided to dabble in crypto trading in 2018. Thereafter, the firm’s revenue shot up to $1.8 billion in 2021, from $278 million in 2019. Funded accounts also increased from 5 million to 22 million.

El Salvador will host an international bitcoin event on Monday where 44 central banks and key financial institutions have been invited. The event will discuss financial inclusion, digital economy, banking the unbanked, the #Bitcoin rollout and its benefits in El Salvador. IMF urged El Salvador to remove bitcoin as a legal tender in January this year, citing it as a threat to market integrity, financial stability, and consumer protection. A US bill cleared by a Senate Committee in February has sought relevant departments to study the adoption of bitcoin by El Salvador and report to Congress on how it affects US interests abroad. El Salvador hosting an international conference on bitcoin adoption and other related topics. El Salvador bought the dip and added 500 BTC to the government coffers, taking the total number of BTC holding to 2,301, worth about $71 million.
Portugal to Begin Taxing Cryptocurrencies, says Finance Minister. Portugal has committed to creating a fiscal framework for cryptocurrencies. The government will examine relevant frameworks already created in other jurisdictions when building its own. The biggest difficulty in creating this framework is to properly define cryptocurrencies. Portugal’s crypto industry is seeing steady growth and adoption. Last month, the central bank gave its very first approval to a financial institution to begin offering crypto-related services. A Portuguese home was purchased using Bitcoin, without involving conversion to fiat money.
