Epic Games have just given away another bunch of assets, this time a massive amount of Wild West focused assets. This is in the form of one large learning project (20GB!) and 7 modular asset packs that were used to create that environment. These assets are yours to keep and use forever, so long as you use Unreal Engine that is. These assets cannot be used in another game engine.
Last year Microsoft announced DXR at GDC and real time raytracing was born. This year, they all came to play, Unity, NVIDIA, Unreal and Crytek all had real-time raytracing demos to show and announcements to make. Perhaps the most shocking announcements were about non raytracing hardware!

ZBrush, the popular sculpting application, just recently released version 2020.1. Along side that release they announced a fully functional (but non-commercial) trial available as well.

Welcome to GamedEVolution, a look at critical games in the history of game development. That is, games that were the first to implement a new technique, algorithm or technology of importance to game developers. In this we look at the technically revolutionary game Alternate Reality from 1985, which was to my knowledge the first game to implement ray casting. Don't worry if you have no idea what that means, as it's explained in the video with some really horrid drawings!
Let me know if you enjoy the idea or not.

Another cool move from Epic Games, they released several of the assets from their 2017 MOBA Paragon. This includes 20 full rigged, textured and animated AAA quality characters and over 1500 environmental assets. This video takes a hands on look at some of the assets included in this giveaway.

GDevelop is an open source 2D game engine with a full editor and a "no programming required" scripting interface. About a year ago I looked at GDevelop 4, and since a new version has been released and boy is it a good one!

In this optional tutorial we look at the primary editor or IDE options available for development with Lua or Love. Using an editor or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is optional, you can use whatever text editor you want. It will however make things a great deal simpler for you and is invaluable in the long run.
The list of IDEs/Editors mentioned in this post is available at:

VRoid Studio is a free 3d character creator for creating 3D animated models in the anime or manga style built on top of the Unity game engine. Previously only in Japanese, the UI has now been translated to English. This video takes a hands-on look at creating a character, then shows how the file can be exported and used in your game engine of choice via FBX format.

AMD have released an open source project called V-EZ that aims at making the Vulkan API easier to use. The code is available open source on Github for Windows and Linux. I am unsure what license the code is released under.
