Hey guys, so today I wanted to answer a question by one of the viewers, I think Joshua, on the Taiwan Gold Card video. It's actually a very insightful question and one that I think a lot of people ask, and one that I think there aren't any answers online for.
Just a reminder, the Taiwan Gold Card program is a really easy program where you need to show $5,000 per month in US dollars as personal income. It cannot be corporate income; it has to be personal and taxed income. Meaning, it cannot be just money in your bank; it has to be shown on documents like your T4 if you're Canadian or your tax income, like W2 for the IRS if you're American. Only through that can you truly show income. So they're pretty serious and pretty strict. I've tried to find workarounds to show them corporate taxes or different stuff, but they want personal and they want taxed income.
Anyways, the question is actually very insightful because he asks if you get the Taiwan Gold Card, will you have issues getting visas, residencies, or traveling to China? Obviously, I know why he asked the question; it's a pretty reasonable question because on Western news, China does sound a bit crazy. They make it sound a bit like North Korea. I've been to North Korea, and China is not at all like North Korea. So I do have a lot of friends who live in mainland China; they're either married to Chinese nationals or have businesses in China. I also have friends who live in Taiwan and a few friends who've lived in Taiwan and then moved to mainland China, like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, etc.
For the most part, China is not crazy despite what you see on the news. I'm not going to try to argue too much about it because, just like the Russia video, I know there's a lot of news. But overall, mainland China understands that there are people who go to Taiwan, there are people who get visas in Taiwan, and generally, if you get visas in Taiwan or residencies in Taiwan, there's nothing stopping you from visiting mainland China, just like many people who hold Taiwanese passports visit Beijing or Shanghai, and nothing happens to them. It's a bit of a more complicated relationship than what CNN or Fox News tends to cover. Definitely not going to cover it on this channel; it's not the point of the channel at all. I like China quite a bit, so I'm just going to leave it at that.
You're perfectly fine getting your Taiwanese Gold Card and making a life in China; nothing will happen to you. It's not a crime; it's not illegal; you're not going to get arrested. If anything, probably Chinese people will be excited that you're so interested in Chinese culture.
