Today, I will be looking at setting up three different popular protocols: NFS, SMB and SSHFS. I will be using Linux today for both the server and the client in order to keep things simple. It is possible to mount these shares other operating systems, but beware your performance will vary. For example MacOS BigSur has had a number of issues with NFS, not sure these have been addressed. SMB of course if the default Windows protocol for mounting remote shares over a network. SSHFS is almost a zero configuration method for mounting remote directories over SSH and being able to mount them locally on your local workstation.
My SSHFS Mount command:
sshfs -o Ciphers=aes128-ctr -o Compression=no -o ServerAliveCountMax=2 -o Server
AliveInterval=15 pi@clear.macknife.info:/nas /testdir2

Today I am providing you with a review of Linux Mint 21, This release is based on Ubuntu 22.04 and custom code from the Linux Mint Team. The release is solid, and I ran into no issues when installing it, or configuring it so I could look at features in the release. Linux Kernel 5.15 is supposed to have a native NTFS driver, but I have yet to see any distro use it, so I assume there is something wrong with it. The NTFS-3g driver (FUSE) is installed by default and will provide you with full NTFS support (Read and Write). I also put the system through my usual benchmarks bring based on Ubuntu 22.04 it is no surprise it performs about the same. I did try the kconstrutor/hardening scripts for Ubuntu on LM 21, and they work find as long as you modify the scripts/pre to point to LinuxMint instead of Ubuntu.

It has been awhile since I've done a video this comprehensive, moving from problem description, workarounds, analysis of potential alternatives, assessing those alternatives and finally choosing one to take into the pilot stage.
This is a personal journey of the steps I took to find out what in the heck was going on with ecryptfs when I tried it using LMDE.
First off, eCryptfs, and LMDE are not at fault here as you will see, so don't yell at them....
Software today is a series of Lego builds using components written by someone else, and in this case the issue (or unresolved opportunity as I like to call them) arose with what seemed at first to be eCryptfs, and later traced back to some of the oldest issues in Linux, which oddly enough are still there
So join me on this journey of "hair raising" to finally decide how to deal with the problem.
Todays artwork is another AI generated issue of someone who looked a lot like me in my "younger" days usually surrounded by too many machines, too many cables and well basically a mess.

What to expect on September 27th 20222, will your favorite linux distribution be ready for AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs? I also explain some of the reasons why we see huge performance gains at 65 watts and progressively less as we move up in power draw to 170 watts. In the past versions of the Ryzen chips the IOD was used to support I/O between memory, storage, networks, etc. AMD on their website says the IOD will include support for light graphics workloads, so for the first time the mainline Ryzen chips include a 6nm GPU. Which RDNA version is it based on? So far AMD has not spilled the beans. But clearly, its something new.

Today I am doing a bit of a reaction video to a statement made by one of the participants of a zoom conference hosted by the Linux Saloon about 3 weeks ago. I am not naming any names, nor do i mean this to be an attack against that person.
This video is meant to show how to evaluate a statement like that and determine if it is true or false. The comment (and I paraphrase) was "Do NOT use Debian it is not secure, the packages are old and out of date, use Ubuntu instead".
There is of course a couple of immediate red flags, first the statement is inflammatory, and does not succinctly describe the bounds of the statement, for example is this about the Workstation products or the Server products? Second what is the definition the person is using for secure.
I will be limiting my definition of secure by to what degree of hardening is applied to the system as a starting point. My plan is to make a 2nd part of this video and repeat the experiment for the Workstation versions of Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 11.5+.
I am hoping you will find this video as a possible method to use to evaluate different questions like this one, so we can arrive at a conclusion that is possible for you to reproduce.
