Alibag, also known as Alibaug, is a coastal town, just south of Mumbai, in western India. It’s known for its beaches like Alibag Beach and Varsoli Beach. The caves can be traced back up to the 1st century BCE by inscriptions recording donations. Out of the twenty-four caves, two caves are a major attraction - the main cave which is the Chaitya (prayer hall) has a beautiful Stupa; the second one is cave no. 10 which is complete in all structural as well inscriptions. Both the caves have pictures of Buddha come out of a printer stuck all over the rocks there is also no water supply there. The caves are facing eastwards. So it is recommended to visit the caves early morning as in sunlight the beauty of carvings is enhanced.
The caves were called Pundru which in Pali language means "yellow ochre color". This is because the caves were the residence of Buddhist monks who wore "the chivara or the yellow robes". Later on, the word Pundru changed to Pandu Caves (as per Ancient Monuments Act 26 May 1909). Decades later people started calling it Pandav Caves - a misnomer which is used for every cave in India.

This place is often frequented by locals, bikers and group of cyclists too. Most talks about the Sunrise attraction which is of course very beautiful when you are standing near a waterfall, Over looking the dam towards the mountains from where Sun rises slowly giving reflections to lake water and surroundings.
An important point to be noted here is that outsiders (Non Local Villagers) are allowed post 7:00 Am inside the lake & dam area for safety and security of everyone since the place is isolated and serene.
So lucky if you got a change to click some selfies and landscape images of a rising sun early morning here. But there is more to the location attractions post Sunrise.
Once you are inside on Vandri lake road (Off Highway), at about 3.5 Km you will see a small Sign Board (White Colour, On left) with a small lane heading inside on left side. That is the pathway to reach the Waterfall, just about 500 meters before you reach the Madpan lake view point.=
Trust me, You will really like the width and length of Vandri waterfall and that huge flowing pathway. Since the water overflows from the lake area and not like other waterfalls that falls from mountains, The height is not to be thought of.
Yet the water force, flowing stream, width, access and safety to enjoy the fresh water is a thumbs up.
As said Vandri waterfall is very safe. A huge group of more than 100 people can enjoy together at various spots inside the flowing stream. You will find small shades and local fisherman on either side and few fishing nets around.
Although safe, the currents and water flow is to be taken care for kids and ladies who are not used to it. Park your car on road adjacent and head towards dam or waterfall location.

It is unclear when the festival started, it became a major social and public event with sponsorship of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after Mughal-Maratha wars, and again in the 19th century after public appeal by Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak, who championed it as a means to circumvent the colonial British government ban on Hindu gatherings through its anti-public assembly legislation in 1892.
