# ***Sonic Youth Biography***
***Sonic Youth*** was an American rock band based in *New York City*, formed in 1981.
Founding members ***[Thurston Moore](https://cutt.ly/AOmudDl)*** (guitar, vocals), ***[Kim Gordon](https://cutt.ly/LOmujx4)*** (bass, vocals, guitar) and ***[Lee Ranaldo](https://cutt.ly/GOmuz5Y)*** (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while ***[Steve Shelley](https://cutt.ly/OOmubhc)*** (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up.
***[Jim O'Rourke](https://cutt.ly/eOmuRjF)*** (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/bOmuPsq)*** (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011.
Their inventive use of alternate tunings, dissonance, and feedback, which they combined with the intensity of *hardcore punk* and the performance art aesthetic of New York's *avant-garde*, created a new sonic landscape with an impact that lasted for decades.
> Similar to ***[“Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star”](https://cutt.ly/4O2Ldy7)***, on eleventh studio album ***“NYC Ghosts & Flowers”***, ***Sonic Youth*** have again written a collection of shorter songs, focused primarily upon lyrics and song structuring rather than guitars.
>
> On the album, the influence of *beat poetry* on the band was strongly evident: The lyrics to most songs resembled the beat style; ***[Lenny Bruce](https://cutt.ly/oOKa3ss)*** and ***[D. A. Levy](https://cutt.ly/7OKa7vn)*** was name-checked, and the cover art was based on a painting by ***[William S. Burroughs](https://cutt.ly/pOKsrb9)***.
>
> Never before has the group sounded so consciously mature. For some fans, this album will sound refreshing, but for the many ***SY*** fans still in love with the confrontational attitude of ***["Death Valley '69"](https://cutt.ly/mO2BAIJ)*** the charged feel of ***["Teenage Riot"](https://cutt.ly/sO2Xs1I)*** or the epic scope of ***["The Diamond Sea"](https://cutt.ly/7O2V0WR)*** this album may sound tired.
# ***The Song***
***“Side2Side”*** is the fifth song on the band’s eleventh studio album ***[“NYC Ghosts & Flowers”](https://cutt.ly/MO2LH1P)***, released on May 16, 2000 by ***[DGC Records](https://cutt.ly/bOGhjh7)***.

# ***The Stone Roses Biography***
***The Stone Roses*** were an English rock band formed in **[Manchester](https://cutt.ly/pEJ1ytv)** in 1983. One of the pioneering groups of the ***[Madchester movement](https://cutt.ly/CEJ1skE)*** in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band's classic and most prominent lineup consisted of vocalist ***[Ian Brown](https://cutt.ly/VEJ1fkt)***, guitarist ***[John Squire](https://cutt.ly/uEJ1jrj)***, bassist ***[Mani](https://cutt.ly/EEJ1lyI)*** and drummer ***[Reni](https://cutt.ly/AEJ1xN4)***.
Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s *dance beat*, the ***Stone Roses*** defined the *British guitar pop* scene of the late '80s and early '90s.
***The Stone Roses*** emerged from the remains of ***English Rose***, a Manchester-based band formed by schoolmates ***Squire*** and ***Brown***.
The group began playing warehouses around *Manchester*, cultivating a dedicated following rather quickly. Around this time, the group was a cross between classic British '60s *guitar pop* and *heavy metal*, with touches of *goth rock*.
In December 1986 they recorded their first demo as a four-piece, including the first studio recordings of “***[Sugar Spun Sister](https://cutt.ly/oEIrEVR)***” and “***[Elephant Stone](https://cutt.ly/REIrbPq)***”. By the time the group's sound had changed considerably, with chiming guitar hooks and a strong melody, alienating some of their old fans, but attracting many new ones.
> Again, in 1994. ***The Stone Roses*** create a dense tapestry of interweaving guitars and pulsing bass grooves, but there's no denying that ***"Second Coming"*** is a bit of a letdown. None of the songs are quite as strong as the best on their debut, but there is plenty of good music on the band's much-delayed second record.
> While the songs occasionally take a back seat to the grooves, several tracks - ***"[Ten Storey Love Song](https://cutt.ly/hEIu943)"***, ***"[Begging You](https://cutt.ly/UEIiqZP)"***, ***"[Tightrope](https://cutt.ly/sEIieCk)"***, ***"[How Do You Sleep](https://cutt.ly/1EIiiCg)"*** and ***"[Love Spreads](https://cutt.ly/BEIipyr)"*** rank as true classics.
>
> It might not be the long-awaited masterpiece it was rumored to be, but ***“Second Coming”*** is a fine sophomore effort.

***"Cocteau Twins"*** was a Scottish band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth by ***[Robin Guthrie](https://cutt.ly/tvKpRaT)*** (guitars, drum machine) and ***[Will Heggie](https://cutt.ly/nvKpOu1)*** (bass), adding ***[Elizabeth Fraser](https://cutt.ly/AvKpDfq)*** (vocals) in 1981 and replacing Heggie with multi-instrumentalist ***[Simon Raymonde](https://cutt.ly/CvKpJR8)*** in 1983.
The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often abandon recognisable language, than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions. They pioneered the 1980s alternative rock subgenre of dream pop.
***"Four-Calendar Café"*** is the seventh studio album by ***”Cocteau Twins”***, released on 18 October 1993 on ***”[Fontana](https://cutt.ly/5vKBAq9)”***. It distinguishes itself from the rest of the Twins' albums in two major areas: the sound is much more pop-oriented and less ambient than previous works, and vocalist Elizabeth Fraser's lyrics are more intelligible than usual.
The album, which proved to be quite illustrative of the period: programmed drum loops, spoon-fed melodies and a shift towards the "adult-alternative" style that flourished in the decade. they made an entirely placid album that didn't quite offer the same dizzying euphoria as its predecessors.
Musically the songs have a winding sound to them and the album seems to fit so many sounds and styles into a consistent mood. Few of the songs sound like would-be music on a future planet where time moves slower and less heavily, but very grounded by their subject matter and still very human.
***”Evangeline”*** is the second song on ”Cocteau Twins” seventh album ”[Four-Calendar Cafe](https://cutt.ly/KvLH1yJ)”.

# ***The Charlatans Biography***
***"The Charlatans"*** are an English rock band formed in the **[West Midlands](https://cutt.ly/NIvCiHx)** in 1988 by bassist ***[Martin Blunt](https://cutt.ly/9IvCmt0)***, who recruited fellow West Midlanders ***[Rob Collins](https://cutt.ly/NIvCItb)*** (keyboards), ***[Jon Brookes](https://cutt.ly/wIvCJVe)*** (drums), Jon Day (guitar) and singer-guitarist ***Baz Ketley***. ***Ketley*** left the band and was replaced by singer ***[Tim Burgess](https://cutt.ly/pIvX8R9)***.
Although the ***Charlatans*** would later become popularly associated with the *[Madchester scene](https://cutt.ly/YIb7ZuY)*, the band's early demos recorded in 1988 in *Birmingham* and *Dudley* already evidenced the sound that the band ultimately became famous for, dominated by ***Collins*** *Hammond organ*.
With their fusion of 1960s *soul*, *R&B* and *garage rock*, the band saw themselves firmly in the West Midlands tradition that included Birmingham bands ***[The Spencer Davis Group](https://cutt.ly/EIvVvS7)*** and early ***[Dexys Midnight Runners](https://cutt.ly/UIvVQUl)***.
> On previous ***[“Wonderland”](https://cutt.ly/aIv2Vs6)***, the band sounded like it still wanted to change the world (o, at the very least, the world's dancefloors), but on eighth studio album ***“Up at the Lake”***, ***The Charlatans*** sounds like its title suggests: a retreat and a retrenchment.
> There's a defined sense that this is the beginning of a new chapter for the band, and that ***“Up at the Lake”*** is their first work as "mature" artists. What makes sense, since the *britpop* torch had been passed on from the ***Charlies*** and their peers to the next generation (***[The Futureheads](https://cutt.ly/wIbM6HI)***, ***[Dogs Die in Hot Cars](https://cutt.ly/TIb1EiR)***, ***[The Coral](https://cutt.ly/BIb1Dlt)***, ***[Franz Ferdinand](https://cutt.ly/aIb1LIi)***, etc.) by 2004.
>
> What's here instead is the boozy barroom shuffle of ***["Bona Fide Treasure"](https://cutt.ly/WIbtS0b)*** British trad rock in the title track, and just a touch of the band's post-Madchester tendencies on ***["Feel the Pressure"](https://cutt.ly/WIbtS0b)***.
> ***[“Up at the Lake”](https://cutt.ly/rIv27Qc)*** is a relaxed and assured record, the work of craftsmen who know how to produce something solid and consistent. As such, there isn't much of a spark, but anyone who's bothered to follow the ***Charlatans*** this long, won't be disappointed.
