In this video we'll service a vintage 1951 RCA Victor 45 rpm Electrola Model 45-EY-4 record changer with a bakelite cabinet. We'll service the amp first with a recap, discuss some helpful tips on recapping, and then we'll tackle the record changer, lubricate the mechanisms, including the AC motor, and listen to the final product. There may end up being a PART 2 for this machine at some point because I was unable to completely restore the changer to full working order and it really needs a conversion to a newer cartridge and stylus.

Here is a cover of Hank Williams' "Lost Highway". I'm playing it in a drop D on a 2001 Guild D55 Acoustic, Fender-era, Made in Corona, California.
I'm a rolling stone, all alone and lost
For a life of sin, I have paid the cost
When I pass by, all the people say
"Just another guy on the lost highway"
Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
And a woman's lies make a life like mine
Oh, the day we met, I went astray
I started rollin' down that lost highway
I was just a lad, nearly twenty-two
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
And now I'm lost, too late to pray
Lord, I've paid the cost on the lost highway
Now, boys, don't start your ramblin' round
On this road of sin or you're sorrow bound
Take my advice or you'll curse the day
You started rollin' down that lost highway

Here is a 1917 Gibson L1 Vintage Archtop Acoustic, Serial #34018
I consider these early Gibson archtops to be some of the most innovative and finely crafted guitars ever made. They were certainly built to last. This one, for instance, is almost 100 years old and it's in perfect playing condition! The mahogany neck is arrow straight, and the carved Adirondack Red Spruce top and mahogany back are crack free. All the wood used in the guitars of this era are from old growth forests that have long been gone from the face of the earth. They simply do not and CANNOT make them quite like this anymore.
When Orville Gibson made his first guitar in the 1890s, he developed something the world had never seen - the archtop guitar. For the first 25 years or so of Gibson's history as a company, the archtop guitar was honed and perfected. It wasn't until the 1920s that Gibson changed the construction of the L-Series to flat tops like the kind Robert Johnson used. This guitar was made while Orville Gibson was actually still alive and president of the company.
The guitar is entirely original except the tuners, which are replacements that did not require extra holes. The original tuners are included as well and could easily be repaired. There's just one tiny piece of metal that needs to be be refashioned to bring them back to working order. A machinist could easily fix them. The case is a brand new hardshell case.
Tonally, these old L1 Archtops are unlike anything else you will ever play. They have a loudness that defies the body size and a clarity and punchiness that is perfect for the blues and ragtime jazz, but sounds great for folky fingerpicking as well. If you're looking for a guitar tone that will stand out from the crowd of Martin Dreadnought and Orchestra clones on the acoustic market, try this guitar. If you don't absolutely love it, there's something broken inside your soul, and you should probably just quit playing.

I realize this is pretty boring after 10 minutes, but it was fun doing it. It's another extended shred session over a Boss eband JS-8 preset. If anyone else has a video using this preset, respond to this video with a link. I'd like to hear a different take on it.

In this video, we'll install a Hammond 1650HA push-pull output transformer in the 2006 Gibson Epiphone Blues Custom 30 amplifier we recently serviced. After replacing the power transformer with a Mercury Magnetics, this customer decided to go ahead and make this into the most rock solid amp we could make it by replacing the OT. We'll also dig into the power transformer and see if we can determine where the failure occurred.

In this video we'll restore a 1950 RCA Victor X-551 All American Five (AA5) radio receiver to full working order. I bought it at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store for $10. It was STONE DEAD. No reception. Only buzzing from the speaker.

In this video, I'll respond to a question I've been asked more than once - what capacitors and resistor values and types do I keep in stock if I want to work on tube guitar amps? That's a two part question, one being what types or brands, and the other being what values. Let's look through my current stock and I'll show you what I keep in stock as standard and talk about why I stock these over some of the other types and brands on the market, such as Jupiter, Sozo, Orange Drop, Sprague, JJ, and F&T. Resistor types include carbon comp, carbon film, metal film, and wire wound.
