This visual/vfx tutorial shows you what bitmaps, pixmaps or rasters are and why retro video games had color limitations. A bitmap, pixmap or raster is a digital image that holds a raster (pixels) where each cell (pixel) holds a color information. The size of the color information times the total cells (pixels) defines how much storage each bitmap occupies. Bitmaps, pixmaps or rasters are more commonly know in a standard format like .jpeg, .png, .gif. The standard nowadays is 32 bit which has millions of colors (2 to the power of 32 = 4.294.967.296). A part of the information is being used for alpha channels instead of the color information itself. ? This vfx tutorial shows you how to make a pause screen look better with a few mouse clicks. The idea is quite simple, you have a pause menue pop up and it looks kind of bland. This video shows you with 3 steps how to improve how your game looks like while being in a pause screen. The first and most obvious one is to draw (draw or draw_gui) a black half transparent rectangle to defocus things that are no essentail while pausing. Then to further focus on the buttons and text being display for the pause screen you can use the fx layer and blurr the things below it which is a common practise in video games To make this even more interesting you can create a distortion and chromatic abberration effect with the under water fx. Finally to toggle these things off and on you simple set the fx layer to visible (layer_set_visible) or not when needed. That's it! Code found in the comment section ? The newest patch V2022.11 comes with some good quality updates for strings and arrays plus new sound filters and some new vfx filters. This update is more a technical one, where we get new ways to use strings and arrays with new functionality. The idea is to insert your own functions into GameMaker's new array functions/scripts for sorting or manipulating values. There are also more new ways to change/manipulate strings also, which is now more efficient to chain/concatenate. The new sounds effects are for me a new field, so I leave that to more experienced users. Binary literals are in a nutshell other ways to write, which will be most like only used to write long numbers visually easier. And last but not least we got new filters to play around with. These appear to be more niche, but time will tell what the community does with them.
