Winnipeg, Aug. 6, 2018: Every August, Winnipeggers commemorate the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima (Aug. 6) and Nagasaki (Aug. 9) with a Lantern Ceremony in Memorial Park. We believe it is important to keep the memory of those horrible events alive so that current generations understand we must never allow nuclear weapons to be used again.

Winnipeg, October 3, 2019 -- There is no doubt that Canadian foreign policy has taken a hard turn to the right, especially with regard to Latin America. Arnold August provides the context and details the US led attacks on Cuba and Venezuela that Canada has been supporting so vigorously.
August is a Montreal-born Canadian journalist and lecturer, the author of Democracy in Cuba and the 1997–98 Elections, Cuba and Its Neighbours: Democracy in Motion and Cuba–U.S. Relations: Obama and Beyond.
He was a member of the Canadian Delegation invited to the Sao Paulo Forum in Caracas last July. His articles are published regularly on many web sites in Latin America, Cuba, Europe, North America and the Middle East. He collaborates with television and radio broadcasts based in Cuba, Ecuador, Venezuela, Canada and U.S. He is a member of the Québec Chapter of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defence of Humanity.
He gives conferences in Cuba, Canada, the UK and until recently the U.S., from which he was barred on March 16, 2019 for his political views and specifically his support for the Bolivarian Revolution.

Winnipeg, May 13, 2016: Family and supporters rallied in front of the Winnipeg Remand Centre to demand answers concerning the death, in custody, of Errol Greene. Errol Greene was taken into custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on April 29.
He was denied medication for his epilepsy and died on May 1, after having had seizures. Fellow inmates claim Errol called for help from his cell but did not receive immediate medical attention. Instead of first aid, they say, Errol was handcuffed, shackled, and thrown onto his stomach.
A larger rally is planned for May 21st.

On Friday, August 6th, Winnipeggers joined in a Lanterns for Peace Ceremony to mark the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These ceremonies are held each year to help keep alive the memory of these attacks so that current generations understand we must never allow nuclear weapons to be used again.
This year, the focus is on the role of youth in the global campaign for nuclear weapons abolition, with speeches from the young activists responsible for convincing Winnipeg City Council to support the United Nations nuclear weapons ban.
Speakers will included Avinashpall Singh and Rooj Ali who, in June, succeeded in persuading the City of Winnipeg to support the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as part of the youth-led International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Cities Appeal.
Winnipeg is now one of 15 Canadian cities to support the ban. Thus far, 86 countries have signed the treaty; Canada’s federal government refuses to support it.

Winnipeg, Manitoba, April 4, 2013: Manitoba's First Nations and the Wilderness Committee held a news conference to declare their opposition to the Reed Lake copper mine, a joint venture of HudBay Minerals and VMS Ventures, Inc.
Reed Lake is in the Grass River Provincial Park, about 110 kilometres east of Flin Flon. The fact this mining operation is under construction in a provincial park has outraged environmentalists and First Nations communities alike. At the news conference, representatives of the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation (MCCN), the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak and the Wilderness Committee pledged to oppose the mine because it is being built within the traditional territory of the MCCN without its permission.
