How math helps us solve the universes deepest mysteries One of the great insights of science is that the universe has an underlying order. The supreme goal of physicists is to understand this order through laws that describe the behavior of the most basic particles and the forces between them. For centuries, we have searched for these laws by studying the results of experiments. Since the 1970s, however, experiments at the worlds most powerful atom-smashers have offered few new clues. So some of the worlds leading physicists have looked to a different source of insight modern mathematics. These physicists are sometimes accused of doing fairy-tale physics, unrelated to the real world. But in The Universe Speaks in Numbers , award-winning science writer and biographer Farmelo argues that the physics they are doing is based squarely on the well-established principles of quantum theory and relativity, and part of a tradition dating back to Isaac Newton. With unprecedented access to some of the worlds greatest scientific minds, Farmelo offers a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of the blossoming relationship between mathematics and physics and the research that could revolutionize our understanding of reality. A masterful account of the some of the most groundbreaking ideas in physics in the past four decades. The Universe Speaks in Numbers is essential reading for anyone interested in the quest to discover the fundamental laws of nature.Review Will pure mathematics prevail over dogged experiments in investigating the physical world? Is the fulfillment of the Pythagorean dream of a mathematical universe finally at hand? Mr. Farmelo, deeply impressed with the accomplishments of Einstein, Dirac and string theorists, is optimistic. Wall Street Journal Farmelo shows that theoretical physics and pure mathematics thrive best together. Scientific American These are brilliant successes of the mathematical approach, and Farmelo leads us through them adeptly, with a mixture of contemporary accounts and scientific insight. Nature Despite the difficulties of writing about such specialised technical material, Farmelo has succeeded in writing a book for the general reader that gives insights into the motivation behind a theory developed by many of todays leading thinkers. His book provides as clear an account of the subject as I can imagine for a non-specialist reader. Times Higher Education (UK) Mathematics here becomes a brilliant laser beam illuminating the very frontiers of science! Booklist STARRED A riveting account of one of the greatest stories of our time. Graham Farmelo has delved deep into this fascinating subject, combining original scholarship and lively interviews with leading contemporary theorists at the forefront of the field. The result is a masterful book, which gives us, for the first time, a behind-the-scenes look at how physicists and mathematicians, driven by their pursuit of ultimate Truth, have been drawn into common territory by mysterious intellectual forces seemingly beyond their control. Nima Arkani-Hamed, professor, Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton A thought-provoking look at a fierce, ongoing controversy over the future of theoretical physics. Kirkus Crisply-written, entertaining and extraordinarily well-informed. The most popular and elegant theories of what makes the cosmos tick are becoming harder---even impossible---to test directly but Graham Farmelo argues in this tour de force that theyre still taking us deep into the mathematical heart of reality. Roger Highfield, author, journalist, and Director of External Affairs at the Science Museum, London This fascinating, splendidly readable, extensively researched, and remarkably up-to-date book takes readers from the days of Newton to the forefront of modern theoretical physics and shows how current research has reshaped the fields of physics and mathematics to the enrichment of both. Jeremy Gray, emeritus professor, Open University Farmelo expertly narrates the history of the dynamic dance between mathematics and theoretical physics, from Newton to Einstein to string theory and beyond. This book will be a must-read for anyone interested in either subjects history or present for many years ahead. Jacob Bourjaily, associate professor of physics, Niels Bohr International Academy, Copenhagen University About the Author Graham Farmelo is the author of several books, including The Strangest Man , which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Farmelo is a Fellow at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge, an Affiliated Professor at Northeastern University, and is a regular visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He lives in London.

Author: Nick Barratt
File Type: epub
Starting from its original conception and design by the owners and naval architects at the White Star Line through construction at Harland and Wolffs shipyards in Belfast, Nick Barratt explores the pre-history of the Titanic. He examines the aspirations of the owners, the realities of construction and the anticipation of the first sea-tests, revealing that the seeds of disaster were sown by the failure to implement sealed bulkheads - for which the original plans are now available. Barratt then looks at what it was like to embark on the Titanics maiden voyage in April 1912. The lives of various passengers are examined in more detail, from the first class aristocrats enjoying all the trappings of privilege, to the families in third-class and steerage who simply sought to leave Britain for a better life in America. Similarly, the stories of representatives from the White Star Line who were present, as well as members of the crew, are told in their own words to give a very different perspective of the voyage. Finally, the book examines the disaster itself, when Titanic struck the iceberg on 14 April and sunk hours later. Survivors from passengers and crew explain what happened, taking you back in time to the full horror of that freezing Atlantic night when up to 1,520 people perished. The tragedy is also examined from the official boards of enquiry, and its aftermath placed in a historic context - the damage to British prestige and pride, and the changes to maritime law to ensure such an event never took place again. The book concludes by looking at the impact on those who escaped, and what became of them in the ensuing years and includes the words of the last living survivor, Millvina Dean.**From BooklistBarratts idea for distinguishing his version of the well-worked tale of the Titanic is this to let stand verbatim, in all their contradictions and subjectivity, survivors and rescuers testimony about what happened on the night it sank. Eschewing a narrative, Barratt instead descriptively links such evidence with press articles, forming a chronicle of the fabled ocean liners brief history from construction to destruction. Likely to engage dedicated Titanic buffs, Barratts method reflects the great contemporary interest in the White Star Lines new ship, built to compete with the rival Cunard Lines Lusitania. Barratts volume includes the famous photographs of the Titanic, and of its officers, whose performance navigating the ship, then evacuating its passengers and crew, prompted controversy after the catastrophe. Whether Captain Smith sailed recklessly into an iceberg field whether shipowner J. Bruce Ismay behaved cravenly whether there was a panic whether nearby vessels responded expeditiously to the Titanics distress callssuch debates arose from the differing survivors accounts that Barratt presents. Chock-full of information, this tome definitely has circulation potential. --Gilbert Taylor ReviewIn this book, the dramatic story of the worlds most famous ship is told through the voices of those who were there. If you want to know more about Titanic, this is the book to read. --Dr. Robert D. Ballard, co-discoverer of the RMS TitanicAfascinating new book that includes first-hand accounts, many previously unpublished, from survivors of Titanics maiden voyage.--Daily Express (UK)Barratt makes available to readers for the first time a wealth of primary documents and sources--and that is a very good thing. And, much to his credit, he does so without any agenda to advance, point of view to promote, or axes of any kind to grind he lets the documents speak for themselves. For people who want to know more of the story of the Titanic from the perspective of her time as well as the men and women who built and sailed her, this book is a rare resource. -- Daniel Allen Butler, author of Unsinkable and The Other Side of the Night** Anyone who wonders what more could possibly be written about the Titanic will be surprised and delighted by Nick Barratts book. It is an invaluable compilation that brings to light an array of fascinating, often moving documents that have never before been published.--Steven Biel, author of Down with the Old Canoe A Cultural History of the Titanic Disaster** Chockfull of information --Booklist What sets this book apart from others that have been published on this subject is that survivors are given the opportunity to tell their personal stories, in their own words, and unedited. The result is heartbreaking in detail and illuminating in its authenticity.--TucsonCitizen
