Linda and I survived London, although we were ejected from Wood Green’s grimy Wetherspoons which is a new low (don’t ask). As always, some of the audio is rotten. The camerawork is also odd at times where the 360 lens was used, especially when we were at Hager’s stand. Yes, me and Hager have been in the same room together – I keep getting asked about whether I’ve spoken to them and I’m sure they keep getting asked about the perceived shortfalls of their game-changing AFDD. Sadly, despite exhibiting at an exhibition with a stand that advertises “ASK THE EXPERTS”, there are no answers here and all you’ll get from this one are embarrassed false smiles and Fat Sam’s report of their technical guy dismissing me as ‘a drunken idiot’… which, I guess, isn’t without merit. I would like to single out CPN Cudis, Viperclip, Wohler and Kewtech as being stands where I had a particularly enjoyable chinwag with those present, not all on camera sadly, and I probably spent too much time with Kewtech as I fangirled over their gear. CPN sorted me out on the day, the others sucked a little air through their teeth and said they’d speak with their marketing people, so I guess I puckered up a few sphincters. We’ll see what happens but remember it’s not AFDDs I have a problem with, although it would be nice to see Hager’s working, it’s smart tech in protective devices which is my bugbear, and my beef with Hager would extend to any other manufacturer trying the same thing. Landlords! Does your rental property wiring need to be to 18th Edition standards to comply with legislation for electrical safety in England that comes into force from July 2020 for new tenancies, or April 2021 for existing? In this long and boring ramble where I happen to repeat myself and cut off Nigel at every opportunity, we look at an installation that was rubber-stamped by a competitor as being UNSATISFACTORY. But is it? Is it really? We’re going to reinspect it and cite our sources for any disagreement we have to the conclusions drawn under what is otherwise a fairly competent and thorough inspection by a bona fide rival inspector that cost the client £192 and left them with a remedial bill somehow amounting to £750 plus VAT. The usual bad language has already been expunged for the most part for any landlords or letting agents who may be venturing onto this channel not knowing what to expect. It’s a return to basics with this vlog which would perhaps sit more at home with my content from five years ago seeing as there’s no script, no fun, no sound quality etc. I’m afraid it’s all rather been done before, not least in my “SWA Splicing and SELV garden lighting” video from April 2019. One annoyance is that I hung around specifically to be able to show you these lights at dusk, but was ejected from site two minutes after they activated, so there’s not even a satisfactory ending to this one. Video production has also been slowed both for personal reasons (I have a lot on for the remainder of the year), and because PowerDirector 365 has been buggered by recent updates to the point where I may actually have to give up on it and go learn how to use a wholly new editor package. You may judge for yourselves whether their findings were on the ball and if this client was in safer hands had they used the other guy. I had to do something I didn’t want to on this one: I pulled the main fuse. I had no real choice on the day. Well… I guess I could have had the DNO out, but their pricing and availability varies across the country and this one was out of my usual area covered by Western Power Distribution. As I don’t want to identify the area I was in, not least because there’ll be some tedious nonce out there watching this and desperately trying to find which DNO they can grass me up to while sobbing back their little bitch tears, I’ve taken steps to blur or anonymise giveaway details like the meter serial, vehicle registrations, estate agent signs etc. You’ll have to go through it frame by frame to try and spot any clue of whose turf this is on you frickin’ loser (you know who you are). For everyone else, when things get blurry, don’t adjust your set. Just to state: pulling the supplier fuse is not big, hard or clever. Better to arrange for safe isolation for planned work to avoid the inconvenience of burn injury or death. All the more annoying then that safe isolation from the grid isn’t a given right and the DNO/suppliers make it difficult, expensive and a postcode lottery when it comes to arrangements and costs. DNO’s charge the earth and threaten legal action if you bypass them, while suppliers will only speak to their end client (the home/business owner) and not the sparkie wanting to get up to their elbows in non-network equipment which *she or he has the damn right to be working on safely*.
