5 Tips To Improve Rhythm on Guitar
In this video lesson I share some practice ideas that you can use to level up your rhythm skills.
Apply these practice ideas to any musical devices that you want to master. Whether it is a particular scale, a set of chords, an arpeggio run, or anything else, applying these practice ideas can help you become more familiar with different aspects of rhythm in the context of the specific thing you are trying to master.
My goal in my own practice is to always be practicing rhythm, no matter what else I'm also practicing. This is because rhythm is the source of music; melody and harmony which happen in time, and rhythm is their placement in time. To improve your rhythm, or your time, will make your playing sound more confident, controlled and fluent.

In this continuation of series on anchor shapes I look at chord progressions. By moving the arpeggio shape introduced in this series, you'll learn to outline chord progressions.
Diatonic chords are great! You can use them in many different ways. Practicing them in different areas of the guitar can help you improve in many ways.
These exercises can improve your chord playing. If you know the voicings for all the triad shapes, you can create great motion in your rhythm playing.
They'll also help you improve your arpeggio skills. Sweet sweet arpeggios. When you know them well you can put together arpeggio runs that outline chords in creative ways.
Also, by knowing the chord families you can unlock different areas of the guitar by connecting them with scales. These shapes are fundamental, and once learned can be adjusted and applied to different scales.

In this lesson I address a question from one of my viewers who is trying to work out how to better connect the different positions on the fretboard. Despite knowing many different patterns it was still difficult for them to fluently move across the neck.
This is an interesting problem, and one that many other people encounter as well. So I thought about it quite a bit with my guitar in my hands.I noticed that while improvising, my thinking gravitated towards one particular approach. This approach, I realized, is what allows me to play in any position over any chord.
This approach is what I chose to focus on for this video.

Using the Big 3 patterns (which I introduced in a previous lesson - https://youtu.be/rL8iQA2Qb5o) as a guiding structure has a lot of interesting applications. One of the ways that they can be used is as a tool for discovering new voicings you can use for chords and progressions.
By combining all three of the Big 3 shapes into one area, you can play the extremely common 1-4-5 progression in at least 12 different ways. This extends to any chord progression - by taking pieces of the different Big 3 inversions you can discover all the different inversion combinations that you can make in each position.
To help you understand the usefulness of these interlocking patterns, in this video I dive into the 1-4-5 patterns in major and minor keys. Dive in and see what you think! These patterns are extremely useful and I think they'll help you see the guitar in a different and hopefully more understandable way.

The concept of modes can seem challenging, but when you thoroughly understand it you are free to explore all the different possible sounds that scales can make.
By visualizing the notes of a scale around a circle, you can easily see what it means for one scale to be the "mode" of another. All you need to do is turn the circle and place a different note wherever the root note was before. With all the same notes, you have a different sound because you are starting and ending at a different place in the pattern of notes.
The tonal perspective is how I refer to looking at a single key and playing all the notes in that key from each different starting note. The chromatic perspective is how I refer to taking the intervals of a mode outside of the context of it's parent key, and comparing the different modes from a static root note.
The two perspectives combined are important in order to understand and be able to use the modes effectively.
