This book examines science fictions relationship to religion and the sacred through the lens of significant books, films and television shows. It provides a clear account of the larger cultural and philosophical significance of science fiction, and explores its potential sacrality in todays secular world by analyzing material such as Ray Bradburys classic novel The Martian Chronicles, films The Abyss and 2001 A Space Odyssey, and also the Star Trek universe. Richard Grigg argues that science fiction is born of nostalgia for a truly Other reality that is no longer available to us, and that the most accurate way to see the relationship between science fiction and traditional approaches to the sacred is as an imitation of true sacrality this, he suggests, is the best option in a secular age. Wilamowitz-Moellendorffs edition of Herakles was published in 1895. The renowned German philologist delivers a detailed reading and translation of Euripides classic tragedy, and also provides the reader with an introduction to the context in which the tragedy unfolds. Volume 1 is divided into three parts. The first is a thorough account of the origins of the story and a characterisation of the figure of Herakles as he first appears in Greek mythology. Herakles belongs to the Dorian tribe and deeply embedded in their self-understanding is, according to Moellendorff, the belief in the divineness of the righteous Dorian man. In the second part of this volume Moellendorff interprets Euripides version of the Heraclian figure and explains where and how this version of the tragedy differs from the original mythological framework. Part 3 gives Euripides Greek text and Moellendorffs translation of the drama into German.

The writing is well edited and accessible, with more than 850 signed articles from nearly the same number of experts. Articles range from 1 to 20 pages or more. Topics that are quite broad (e.g., Risk behaviors) are divided into multiple sections (e.g., Drug use among teens, Suicide, Teen pregnancy, etc.). Such sections contain individual bibliographies. Bibliographies cite both primary and secondary literature as well as Internet resources, such as government or association sites, when appropriate. The primary focus appears to be on U.S. practices and institutions, from preschool to higher education. However, international coverage can be found throughout the set in articles on countries or regions (Canada, South Asia), as well as within topics (e.g., Comparing Science Education Requirements around the World in the essay on Science Education, or Rural Education International Context). Readers will have to look elsewhere for an overview of some subjects, such as adult education and academic libraries, for which there are no entries.Volume 8 contains some useful appendixes as well as a detailed subject index. Appendix 1 lists assessment and achievement tests, with a summary of audience and purpose, and contact information. Next is a listing of state departments of education, followed by the large appendix 3, titled Court Cases, Legislation, and International Agreements.
