Game #18 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a smaller version of the game from the previous episode, Mini Shogi! While regular shogi is played on a 9x9 board with 20 pieces per side, mini shogi shrinks the battlefield down to 5x5 and reduces each player's army size to 6 (one pawn, one bishop, one rook, one silver general, one gold general, and of course the king). However, the smaller scale does not mean the game will be any easier, and the mechanics and objective remain the same: checkmate the enemy king by placing him under attack and cutting off all possible escape, using captured enemy pieces as allies and promoting them once they breach enemy territory to your advantage. There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, you can decide which player goes first, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are three pieces of trivia about Mini Shogi: 1. The squares on a real-life board are marked by Roman numerals on the top and Chinese characters on the side. 2. The opposite of mini shogi is max shogi! It's a massive-scale game where 402(!) pieces on each side take each other on. It's like a real war! (Personal addendum: how big of a board would you need to support that many pieces?!) 3. Apparently, real shogi pros can carry out a whole match inside their heads. No board required! (Personal addendum: People say I have a good memory, but I couldn't do that!) This week on Sunday Longplay, we're celebrating my birthday with my first ever co-op longplay with my best friend! Check out his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY0IOUHwrYj-4WRRFpJTliQ Together we're playing the recently-released Streets of Rage 4, released April 30 on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch, Streets of Rage was a series that my friend grew up with back in the Sega Genesis years, and I just love retro games in general, so this felt like a perfect game to play together. I didn't have the same experience with this franchise that he did since I was a Super Nintendo kid, but we did play through Streets of Rage 2 on his Genesis Mini before this, and I did enjoy it just the same even though I admittedly suck at beat-em-ups. The game takes place 10 years after Streets of Rage 3, where Mr. X and his crime syndicate had been defeated and Wood Oak City endured a brief period of peace. But now, Mr. X's children, the Y Twins, have started a new crime syndicate to carry on their father's legacy, and have now concocted a master plan to brainwash the city using hypnotic music. After learning of their plot, series mainstay Blaze Fielding calls in some favors from some old friends: Axel Stone, Adam Hunter, Adam's daughter Cherry Hunter, and one of Dr. Zan's apprentices, Floyd Iraia. There are also 12 unlockable characters, consisting of the entire rosters from the first three Streets of Rage games. In order to unlock them, all you have to do is fill up the score bar. After each level, your final score is added to your lifetime total, and once that lifetime total reaches a certain amount, you will unlock the next character. until you unlock the final character which is SOR3 Shiva. In this playthrough, we're bringing everyone, all 17 characters, into the fight! There are also four hidden retro levels scattered throughout the game, more specifically in levels 2, 4, 5, and 8. In order to access them, you have to find a Bare Knuckle (which is the Streets of Rage series's name in Japan) arcade machine and zap it with a taser. In this video, we're covering all four of the retro bosses as well! We probably could do this on Hardest difficulty if we stayed with our best characters for the whole game, but for the sake of showing everyone in action, including unfamiliar characters, and also because Normal mode is just too easy, we decided to do this on Hard mode.
