Installing Windows is still a very simple process if you just want to reformat your drive. While a lot of the install process still looks like what it did in the Vista days, it's relatively straightforward, I must say. It doesn't look amazing, it definitely doesn't really handle as many things as most Linux installers, but it works. Although it lets you only reinstall just the system WITHOUT needing a separate partition for your user files. That's something we could take inspiration from. The config screens that come next are really much better than what we usually get in Linux installers. These screens are clean, super simple and enticing, and very reassuring. These constant loading times and reboots and restarts and "please wait" screens are pretty jarring and don't make for a super nice setup experience. Unfortunately, unless you remove internet access to your device, there is no setting up a computer without a MS Account, which is very annoying. Then, you get to the multiple screens where you'll decide how much you want to restrict MS Data collection, knowing full well you can't completely stop it. You get the option to use "fashion mode", which is just a dock at the bottom, with some system indicators such as network or battery life, and system menus, or the "efficient mode", which resembles Windows, with a task bar, indicators on the right, and a "show desktop menu". The panel It hosts a launcher, which opens a GNOME like grid of all applications installed, a multitasking view shortcut, similar to what the elementary OS one does, spreading all windows for you to see, and showing virtual desktops, and then some application shortcuts.with the Deepin File Manager, Deepin Store, Deepin Music, Deepin Movie, Google CHrome, Control center, and "disk", which is a handy applet allowing you to see all available disks quickly. You can add app shortcuts just by dragging them to the panel, or by right clikcing its icon when the app is started, and selecting "dock". The desktop With Deepin, the desktop can store files, countrary to GNOME or elementary OS. With a right click, you get the option to create folders or documents, with handy templates already created for office documents, as well as accessing some settings, such as the corner settings, to select hot corner functionnality, from turning off the screen, opening the control center, showing all windows, opening the launcher, or simply showing the desktop. You can also get to the wallpaper settings through this context menu. Control center This is Deepin's implementation of the system settings. The first thing that you'll notice, is that it pops up from the right edge of the screen: it's not an application, with its own window, it's part notification center, and part control center, ressembling the Mac OS X equivalent, for notifications. It uses transparency and blur efficiently, and looks very good, although since it's monochrome, it isn't always easy to use muscle and visual memory to find what you're looking for. The settings are dispatched into neat categories, and you can just scroll from one category to another, which limits the number of clicks, but can be quite weird at first. I'll go into more detail about what is available in this control center, but it does look the part and is a new, innovative implementation of settings. We do have plenty of great software, alternatives to most, if not all, the biggest proprietary utilities that people use. Professionals that rely on these niche applications need the missing 10% of features in most cases. And even if they could do without these 10%, there's still the matter of compatibility with your existing projects, files, and the training required. Linux still fails at that, even though we could still say that these app developers fail at bringing their apps to Linux, the fact remains: their apps aren't on Linux, and so the pros that depend on them aren't on Linux either. Second area where Linux fails is gaming We've come a long way. With Proton, Steamplay, Heroic Games Launcher, Lutris, and plenty of other awesome utilities, gaming on Linux is a reality. Click on the "View" menu, then "User interface". By default, it's the standard menubar and toolbar combo, but if you click on "tabbed", you'll see that you can now use a ribbon interface, just like what Microsoft Office uses. Next, we'll look at the icons. From the tabbed interface, click the main menu, in the top right corner, and select "Options". Then click the "View" menu, and in the "Theme" drop down menu, you'll have plenty of options. You can also reorder any of the icons from any of the tabs of the ribbon. CLick the main menu again, and then "customize". Then click the "Notebookbar" tab. here, yu'll see the "target" dropdown menu that lets you select which tab you want to change. To install Microsoft fonts, you generally have a package in your distro's repositories, provided you enabled the non free software ones. the package is generally called ttf-mscorefonts or ttf-mscorefonts installer. On Ubuntu or Ubuntu based distros, for example, open a terminal, and run sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer If you're using an arch based distro, you can find it in your graphical package manager through the AUR. Next, in the LibreOffice Writer tab, and the Compatibility tab, tick the "Reorganize form menu to have it MS compatible" checkbox. Also tick the "Word compatible trailing blanks" checkmark. Next, if you interact with MS Office users a lot, you'll want to send them documents using the Office formats. Click on the "general" tab of the Load / Save panel, and in "Always save as", select Word 2007-365 (docx). Then in the document type dropdown, select spreadsheet, and change the "always save as" field to Excel 2007-365 xlsx, and repeat that step for Presentations and the pptx format. To import styles and templates, click the "File" tab in Writer, and then "Templates". There, click the "Manage" button, in the top right corner, and click "Import". There, you can select "templates", "presentations", or "styles". LibreOffice lets you install extensions to add features to the suite. You can head over to extensions.libreoffice.org to view a full list. To install extensions, download them from the extensions portal, and you'll get a .oxt file. Then, in LibreOffice, click the "Extensions" tab, then the "extensions" menu, and "Extension manager". Click the "Add" button, and go find your oxt file to import it.
