Enter to win a FREE copy of Galileo Galilei’s DIALOGUE ON TWO WORLD SYSTEMS ?
https://kingsumo.com/g/dukrpm/win-a-free-copy-of-galileo-galileis-dialogue
Welcome to an experimental new feature of the Into the Impossible Podcast! In a series of videos, I'm going to analyze my favorite popular science book of all time... well, maybe my second favorite after Losing the Nobel Prize!
Galileo's Dialogue changed the way I think and write about astronomy. It is his most brilliant and personal work. The Maestro constructed it over the better part of a decade and it has influenced scholars and scientists ever since, including a little-known scientist named Albert Einstein.
Watch my PragerU "Book Club" conversation about the Dialogue: https://youtu.be/a7h0Oup9cfE
You can buy your own copy of the Dialogue here https://amzn.to/3irj887 (I get a tiny affiliate fee from this link.) Note: DO NOT buy the Kindle version as it is NOT the Dialogue (it's the Discourse, great as well, but unrelated to this video/project).
Here is a link to the Wikipedia page on the Dialogue that I discuss in this video: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialogue_Concerning_the_Two_Chief_World_Systems
Over time, I will cover more sections of the Dialogue from the perspective of an astronomer and lover of science history...and Galileo, faults and all.
And please join my mailing list to get resources and enter giveaways to win a FREE copy of my book (and Galileo's too) http://briankeating.com/mailing_list.php ?

In the last days of his life, Albert Einstein remained vexed by a problem he had devoted so much of his life to: how to reconcile his Theory of General Relativity with the emerging field of Quantum Mechanics. General Relativity (GR) tells us how the presence of mass curves and warps spacetime, changing trajectories of massive objects like planets and altering the experience of time itself.
00:00 GR theory has given us the best descriptions of large scale motion, but as we shrink down to scales below the size of a quark we start to see problems emerge. Some of them come from infinite energies that emerge at infinitesimal short ranges, or in how General relativity changes the results of Quantum Mechanics with the bending of spacetime.
03:00 There are problems with GR, especially how it does not play well with quantum mechanics . Here I discuss the groundwork of topics like background independence and time dilation. Then I Introduce Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) a possible path to solve the problems. I discuss quantized space and time, the history of how LQG was formulated from Ashketar to Rovelli to the modern day.
07:00 I close with a frank discussion of some problems with LQG, including results from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and why some people, like past guest Michio Kaku are skeptical of it because it does not include fermions and is in conflict with Fermi's observations that some believe rules out energy-dependent speeds of light predicted by LQG.

In the 7 years since BICEP2 first claimed detection of primordial B-mode polarization, cosmologists have continued to whittle away at the allowed parameter space within which inflationary gravitational waves could have been produced. These observations have added powerfully constraining data
Recently, a team of colleagues completed an analysis of all the data from the South Pole experiments BICEP2, Keck Array, and BICEP3 through 2018, and correlated the results with results from the CMB space missions Planck and WMAP. Data from the latter two satellites are primarily used to remove the foreground contamination from interstellar dust, which was the culprit behind BICEP2’s original claim in 2014
The BICEP team’s new results improve the previous best constraints on B-modes by a factor of two, and powerfully constrain or eliminate many of the kinds of models of inflation previously believed to most accurately describe the earliest moments of the cosmos.
Almost all simple models of inflation — those first proposed by Alan Guth and others — are now thoroughly ruled out. Does that spell the end for inflation? Where are cosmologists turning next?

#MindScape #SeanCarroll #physics
Sean Carroll joins me to discuss his magnificent new book, The Biggest Ideas In the Universe. Sean is an American theoretical physicist and philosopher who specializes in quantum mechanics, gravity, and cosmology. He is the Homewood Professor of Natural Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He has been a contributor to the physics blog Cosmic Variance, and has published in scientific journals such as Nature as well as other publications, including The New York Times, Sky & Telescope and New Scientist. He is known for atheism, critique of theism and defense of naturalism.
He has appeared on the History Channel's The Universe, Science Channel's Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Closer to Truth (broadcast on PBS), and Comedy Central's The Colbert Report. Carroll is the author of Spacetime And Geometry, a graduate-level textbook in general relativity, and has also recorded lectures for The Great Courses on cosmology, the physics of time and the Higgs boson.
He is also the author of four other popular books: From Eternity to Here about the arrow of time, The Particle at the End of the Universe about the Higgs boson, The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself about ontology, and Something Deeply Hidden about the foundations of quantum mechanics. He began a podcast in 2018 called Mindscape, in which he interviews other experts and intellectuals coming from a variety of disciplines, including "[s]cience, society, philosophy, culture, arts and ideas" in general. He has also published a Youtube video series entitled "The Biggest Ideas in the Universe" which provides physics instruction at a popular-science level but with equations and a mathematical basis, rather than mere analogy. The series has become the basis of a new book series with the installment, "The Biggest Ideas in the Universe: Space, Time, and Motion".
00:00:00 Intro
