Hidden World of the Misanthrope
I am a misanthrope. Although I can get on well with a person one-on-one, I don’t generally do well in groups. I have a disdain for the human race. That doesn’t mean I don’t try. I’ve been trying all my life to fit in, but in general, people do not respond well to me – unless I fake it. To be successful in a job, I have to put on a constant face. I have to act nice to people who I don’t really like. I put up with friends who rarely show me respect. I keep all my anger bundled up inside of me as to not cause offence. This is the life of a hidden misanthrope.

I was at Woolworths the other day buying some groceries and I went through one of those self-service checkouts. You know the ones. The ones that take a video of your face up close in the top right-hand corner. (Although, it should be noted that Woolworths have said that these aren’t being recorded, “As we’ve said, the image is just a reflection on the screen & is not recorded”). But they’ve managed to add a new feature this year that is equally annoying. The donation prompt.
Basically, just before you pay for your shopping, the self-service screen brings up a prompt which asks you to make a donation by rounding up your bill to the nearest dollar. Of course, what did mug me do? I accidentally pressed the “yes” button. At first I thought, “I’ll just pay the damn donation”, but then I said to myself, “No, I didn’t come here to make a donation. Already the cost of living is high enough. If I want to make a donation, I’ll make it in my own time, not while I’m buying groceries” So I called the lady over, and of course, she was all pissed off. I was probably only the 50th person that day to make the same mistake. She told me I had to push the “No” button if I didn’t want to make a donation. I said, “Thanks, I’ll remember that for next time”. She fumbled around for about two minutes trying to get the machine to cancel the transaction, but it was just not going her way and she was clearly getting more and more pissed off. Finally she just told me that I’d have to go over to a different machine and re-scan my items, and of course told me again that I had to make sure to press the “No” button this time if I don’t want to make a donation. I could have reacted, but I thought, “What’s the point?”.
I mean, Woolworths are the ones who put this stupid feature on their self-service checkouts. I don’t think it benefits customers in any way. Woolworths take millions of our 50-cent donations, and then pass it off as their own. The customers don’t actually get any credit for it. Thanks Brad.
In this article published in The Guardian on 11 October this year, “Nearly a fifth of Australia’s Covid vaccine stock binned amid warning of fresh wave of cases”, Professor Adrian Esterman, chair of biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of South Australia stated, “Two doses alone [of a COVID vaccine] offer little defence from the new variants, with protection from serious illnesses and hospitalisation waning over time”. But yet, Woolworths are still enforcing that all their staff have two doses of a COVID vaccine. They even have a Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rob McCartney. He is quoted as saying on their website, “The medical evidence is clear – vaccination is the best protection against COVID-19 for our team members. A vaccinated team member is far less likely to get COVID, much less likely to pass it on, and also significantly less likely to become seriously ill”. I think Woolworths need to hire some fact-checkers.
Not to mention that “a leaked Woolworths employee training module slide claims that it is using ‘artificial intelligence and facial mapping’ in its stores — but the company denies it is using the technology”. “Did You Know? Our high standard CCTV is already resulting in offenders being arrested by police. We are using technology like artificial intelligence and facial mapping to identify offenders!”.
But every month, there seems to be more news about Woolworths surveillance. In August, “Woolworths expanding surveillance of customers. Privacy policy not keeping up with spying on shoppers”. In September, “Aussies vow to boycott Woolworths after the supermarket installs controversial new surveillance systems”. And just last month, “New Woolworths technology tracks the carbon footprint of customer purchases to ensure personal emission targets are met”. Okay, that last one I made up, but it sounds like something that Woolworths might do, right?
So they’ve got surveillance cameras on their self-service checkouts. They’re fleecing customers of millions of dollars of donations every year and then passing it off as their own. Their forcing their workers to get vaccinated. And they’re potentially using facial recognition technology, which they deny. Does anybody else think Woolworths are becoming like a fascist state?
Fascism (noun): Any right-wing, authoritarian, nationalist ideology characterised by centralised, totalitarian governance, strong regimentation of the economy and of society, and repression of criticism or opposition. (Figuratively) Any extreme reliance or enforcement of rules and regulations.

Brand Australia’s falling down… According to the FutureBrand Country Index 2019 — a global research survey that is held every five years — Australia’s brand is not looking so good. Australia slipped seven places from 8th in 2014 to 15th this year. That’s a significant drop.
We can also see that the US is slipping in the ranks moving from 7th in 2014 to 12th this year. The UK didn’t do very well either slipping from 12th to 19th. Although Canada is still in the top 10, it did fall three places. It looks like the big English-speaking Western countries aren’t doing so well.
This year’s top 10 include Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Austria, and Luxembourg.
Just out of interest, here are the bottom 15 countries with Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan, Ukraine, and Iraq rounding out the bottom five — Not many surprises there.
So why did Australia slip to 15th? How is this rank calculated?
In their report, FutureBrand state that they took the World Bank’s top 75 countries by GDP and reordered them based on how survey recipients rate the dimensions of a country’s Purpose and Experience. Dimensions of Purpose include Value System, Quality of Life, and Business Potential. Dimensions of Experience include Heritage & Culture, Tourism, and Made In (Products & Services).
These factors are important in determining the rank as they are vital for quantifying the power of a country’s brand. Brand is based entirely off perception. If a country is seen to have a low quality of life, or a bad value system, or a hard place to set up business, then this will hurt people’s perception of that country. That is, it will hurt the country’s brand.
The report outlines four levers that are important in determining a country’s brand.
Lever 1: Quality of Life — The new pursuit: Living richly, not just living a rich life. It’s more important than ever for a country to look after the safety, well-being, and happiness of its people. With an emphasis on all people, not just select socioeconomic tiers.
Lever 2: Environmental Friendliness — Operation rescue earth. There’s always a trade-off between economic growth, human well-being, and a sustainable future. Countries like Japan are taking the lead.
Lever 3: Made In — Products & Services: The badges of a country. A product or brand serves as a powerful symbol of social advancement for a country, and even influences a person’s decision to work, live, or play there.
Lever 4: Polarising Politics — The knock-on effect. Perceived tolerance and political freedom are important. If travellers feel threatened by an intolerant country, then they won’t visit and spend their tourism dollars in that country.

I’ve already spoken of the negative aspects of bitcoin (link posted below), but this most famous of digital currencies is having a bit of a resurgence of late. One year ago (October 12, 2016), bitcoin was valued at about US$635. Today, it is valued at about US$4882. That’s a whopping 668.8% gain over one year! For comparison, the best bank accounts are only paying about 3% p.a.
So why has it’s price gone up so much? Well, I think most people would agree that it’s purely based on speculation. Because investors see it rising in value, they hope that if they buy some bitcoin, they’ll be able to sell it later for a tidy profit.
But the sad thing about speculative assets and currencies like bitcoin is that they usually end up crashing. The moment one person starts selling up all their bitcoin, and then another follows suit, and then suddenly everyone panics and starts selling, the price will drop quickly.
So why is bitcoin considered speculative? Why does it not have any real value?
First of all, people do not want to spend it. Just say I want to buy a new car for $20000. I use 4.1 of my bitcoin to purchase the car. After one month, the value of bitcoin has risen again, just say it has increased by $1000 to $5882. That means, I could have bought the car for only 3.4 bitcoin! It would have been better for me to hang on to my bitcoin and not buy the car.
Secondly, nothing is priced in bitcoin. I can’t go to the greengrocer and buy a kilo of apples for 0.0004 bitcoin. I have to exchange my bitcoin for legal tender, then go and buy the apples in dollars. No government supports bitcoin.
Thirdly, there are too many alternatives to bitcoin. Here’s the top 10 in order of market capitalisation: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dash, NEM, NEO, IOTA, and Monero. The list goes on. On the list I found, there were almost 1000 different types of cryptocurrencies with some form of market capitalisation! Surely, most of these currencies have been designed for one simple reason … for their owners to try to cash in on the crypto-craze.
I’m not a big fan of the stock market, but at least stock represents something – a share in the ownership of a company. But cryptocurrencies have become inherently valueless. They don’t do anything. They don’t have any inherent value. You can’t use them easily, nor would you want to. The only single reason somebody would buy bitcoin is as a speculative investment.
And there lies the biggest flaw in bitcoin. When investors buy bitcoin, it means they’re not using their investment dollars to fund more socially responsible campaigns. Things such as renewable energy, environmental stewardship, human rights, and social justice. Investment in bitcoin has little positive impact on society, if any.

Recently, my family and I went away on holidays with two other families. Both were Chinese. One family are quite wealthy and have one child, while the other is a single mum who has two young children. We went to a not-so-well-known theme park in Queensland. At Pot Plant World there was free entry, but this immediately set of alarm bells as I knew everything else would probably be expensive. When we walked in, there was a massive open-air cafeteria, which was really nice, but then I looked at the menu. There was the world famous Pot Dog which was a vegan hot dog with three types of relish and raw spring onion on top. It looked quite delicious, but also cost $27. Although I wasn’t planning to eat here, I wasn’t a complete scrooge. We did go on the Pot Pot Train and played a round of Pot Pot Golf. A family ticket for both activities was $85. That was fine. We finished up around 12:00 after seeing a lifetime’s worth of pot plants, but as we were exiting, the company had had the brilliant idea of placing an overpriced ice cream stand right next to the exit. So, of course, as we were exiting, all the kids were screaming, “Ice cream, ice cream!”, but I just told my kids that this ice cream is too expensive and that I would buy them some in the city when we go back in for lunch. Of course, the rich couple that we were with said, “Ah, come on, let’s buy some ice cream for the kids!”. I just replied fairly diplomatically, “Nah, I’ll wait till they’ve had lunch and then I’ll get them some in the city”. And this was when all hell let loose. The couple kept prodding me to buy some ice cream, and I kept refusing. And then the children started crying. Not just my children, but all of the children. The couple continued and kept admonishing me in public, and I looked like the right jerk. But I stuck to my guns and told my kids that I will get them ice cream, just not now. And then, the other lady joined in and started publicly berating me asking me why I was being so stingy and telling me that we’re only here once, so what does it matter. In the end, I was fed up with being publicly humiliated and just walked off. I thought to myself, “What does it matter if I don’t buy any ice cream?”.
Just to be clear, I admit that I am frugal, but I am certainly not stingy. I was not against the children eating ice cream, I was just not going to buy them the most expensive ice cream in the world. I didn’t even care if the other families bought ice cream, but I was not going to be pressured into buying it. I was simply going to wait until we got into the city and then buy ice cream for the children after lunch, which is exactly what I did in the end.
The same thing happened when I was living in Japan. All my American colleagues wanted to go out every night to have a beer, which usually turned into five or ten beers plus a meal costing them around $100-$200 every night. And every night, I pretty much refused to go out until they stopped asking me.
When I was in high school, I used to go out with my mates and they’d buy a coke or whatever from the pizza shop, and of course, I would go next door to the supermarket instead and buy the same coke for one-third the price. And as expected, they teased me. “You bloody cheapskate! Can’t even afford a coke!”, even though I had the exact same coke in my hands. I don’t know where those people are anymore. I don’t really care. But I presume they’re up to they’re eyeballs in debt. They were always very careless with their money, and it seemed to be the cool thing to do. I’ve found that in China as well. Generally speaking, Chinese do not like to be seen as tight with their money.
Anyway, that’s my frugal life. It should be noted that I only work part-time as I can’t bear full-time work, hence the need for my frugality. I simply don’t have the same salary as all these people. I’ve found that many people that I’ve had to deal with in my life just don’t like my frugality. I don’t know where it stems from, but they just do not like themselves being seen as cheap, and consequently, they almost tease anybody around them who does not live the same way they do. If you don’t want to go out and buy overpriced soy lattes, then they unfriend you. “Good riddance!”, I say.
As I said, I don’t see myself as stingy. I would define a stingy person as someone who tries to, for example, skip the bill, or doesn’t buy their round of drinks when it’s their shout, or whatever. However, I also can see that other people almost find it offensive when I’m frugal around them, and hence another reason for my misanthropy, and another reason why I don’t like spending my precious time with other people. There’s always a game that you have to play. You have to show your wealth, or at least, show that you’re not tight.

I “believe” in science… Believe? Has science become a religion? Don’t get me wrong – I love science. I studied science extensively at high school and went on to get a science degree. I am not a practising scientist, however, I did study physics, chemistry, and statistics, and academically, I did very well. Now, I know, that doesn’t make me an expert and I’m certainly not claiming to be one. However, I am very familiar with the scientific method. In this presentation, I’m not claiming that you should ignore the science, but certainly, you shouldn’t blindly follow it either. Blindly following anything is not very scientific… actually, one could argue that it’s the opposite of what the scientific method teaches. It is important for scientist and medical researchers to have a healthy dose of scepticism. If scientists weren’t sceptical, they would always accept the current scientific status quo and never try to improve on it. As many of us would already know, scientific knowledge is ever changing, and that’s good! Science is based on experiments, testing, retesting, and then stating claims – and then revisiting those claims and testing them again and again over time. But blindly believing in science is a recipe for disaster.

This will probably be my first and only video on American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift (unless of course, 30 years in the future she becomes President of the United States or something). I’m not going to be too critical here as she is worth 1.1 billion USD meaning whatever she’s doing, she’s doing it pretty well. Not to mention that almost everybody I know likes her, so I’ll tread a little bit carefully in this presentation. But the key is to put on lots of lipstick, keep your mouth slightly open, show your front teeth, and look seductively at the audience. Sorry, I promise, that’s the only wisecrack I’ll make. I’ve got it out of my system now.
First, I’d just like to point out, I don’t like fame and celebrity if you weren’t already aware. I don’t gush over people. I think celebrities are just like you and me, only more well known and worth more. But Taylor Swift mania, in my opinion, has got a little bit out of control of late. Let me explain.
I was at the dentist not too long ago, a guy I guess in his 30s. And guess who he likes? Taylor Swift! He couldn’t stop talking about her. Problem is, when I’m dosed up on lidocaine, or whatever, and he’s got his hands in my mouth, I can’t respond. I just have to shut up and listen. Him and his assistant were going on about the upcoming concert in Melbourne at the time, and how he missed out on buying the cheaper tickets, but ended up paying $800 for tickets for him and his wife. I don’t know if that’s $800 each, or $800 for two, but either way, it’s expensive. Not to mention the travel costs to get from Brisbane to Melbourne, plus hotel stays and the like. Cost of living crisis? What cost of living crisis? To be fair, he is a dentist, so I guess his salary is pretty good. My bill came close to $500, so I guess that contributed somewhat towards the tickets. He was going on about how it’s such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he many never have the chance to see her again (even though she’s been here twice in two years, hasn’t she?). And he was going on about how she’s the “seminal singer of our generation”. As I said, I was loaded up with lidocaine, so had very little to say on the matter.
As I said, I don’t get how people gush over celebrities. It doesn’t make sense to me. I do not get that feeling.
People are actually tracking Taylor Swift’s private jet, which her team doesn’t like very much issuing the perpetrator a cease and desist, even though he’s only using public information to track the jet.
Fans, fanatics, whatever you want to call them, were waiting in the cold in Melbourne in the middle of the night trying to catch a glimpse of the star as she disembarked from her plane a hundred metres away or whatever. The best photo they got was a zoomed up photo of the airport ground crew who had a better vantage point and were also trying to catch a glimpse of Ms Swift. Of course, all the media outlets sent out their finest reporters to the airport filming her plane landing and so on.
According to recent news, Taylor Swift went to an Italian restaurant. Taylor Swift went to the zoo. Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis arrived at the airport on his private jet. Yes, this is considered breaking news. Man, the carbon footprint between them must be staggering!
Of course, the ABC haven’t stooped to such lowbrow reporting. It’s beneath them. Oh wait, “It feels like Swift is the biggest thing to ever land in Sydney” “How much will Taylor Swift make from merchandise at her Sydney shows?” “Taylor Swift dines in Surry Hills while fans queue for merchandise” “Superstar Taylor Swift touches down in Sydney” Plastic bead shortage after Taylor Swift bracelet craze”. You get the idea. But even stories that are only slightly related are making the headlines on the ABC, “Bedside vigil for girl who was critically injured in crash that killed sister on Taylor Swift trip.” I wonder if she was headed to Aldi instead of the Taylor Swift concert, would it have made such big headlines? Hmm.
Look, I don’t really blame the media. Taylor Swift brings in the money wherever she goes. I’m not even really that upset by the mania around her. People obviously like her, and wherever she travels to, she literally boosts the economy. She gives people jobs. All those hundreds of people who help to set up her concerts, all the security staff, cleaners, ticket sellers, merchandise vendors, plastic bead factories. They’re all profiting because of Taylor Swift. And now she’s a billionaire because of it. Some might even argue that I’m profiting from her by making this video. (Although, I suspect most of my regular viewers won’t be watching this.) It’s just that, as I said, I just don’t give a hoot about celebrities. They don’t particularly interest me, and I don’t get any feelings of excitement when I see them. Anyway, that’s my take on Taylor Swift mania, and as I said, I won’t be talking about her again (unless of course she becomes the president).

Hi guys. This is my first direct to Rumble/Odysee release. As you may or may not know, YouTube have banned me for seven days for spreading medical misinformation. I don’t think the video was particularly incriminating, however, I did offer some opinion in the video, which was probably my downfall. From what I understand from feedback from YouTube, presenting factual data is fine, but if I offer an interpretation of that data that “contradicts expert consensus from local health authorities or the World Health Organisation”, then YouTube will punish me like a naughty schoolboy. Don’t worry, I’m still going to make videos and publish them straight to Rumble and Odysee instead during my seven-day hiatus, and I will just upload them to YouTube at a later date. Regrettably, I get very little revenue from Rumble and Odysee, so unfortunately I still rely on YouTube for the bulk of my channel’s income. Yes, I know, it sucks, but this is the world we live in. The extra money is useful in a high inflationary world. Anyway, that’s my little update. Please tell a friend if you’re able. I’m actually supposed to be working today, so I’ve kept this very brief. Added sugar seems to be in everything. I was at the supermarket yesterday trying to find a healthy snack for the children and they wanted something sweet. So we decided to buy a watermelon (only a small one) and it ended up costing $10.23. A single watermelon cost more than 10 bucks! For comparison, chocolate biscuits (150 g) at Aldi imported from the UK cost 75 cents. Per 100 g, they contain 2092 kJ (499 kcal) of energy and 31 g of sugar. Per 100 g, the watermelon contains 127 kJ (30 kcal) of energy and 6.2 g of sugar. Of course, every other sugar or salt laden snack was dirt cheap, too. Veggies and fruits were almost all expensive. So what’s going on here? Why are healthy, nutritious foods so expensive, yet unhealthy, refined snacks so cheap? Most snacks in Australian supermarkets are less than $2. Many are less than $1! Most fruits and vegetables cost more than $5 a kilogram, often a lot more. No wonder we have an obesity and diabetes crisis. What we need to do to fix this problem is to implement a tax to change people’s behaviour. I’m not a big fan of taxes (nor capitalism for that matter), but if that’s what it takes to make eating healthy easier, then I think we should do it. If something is cheap, people will buy it more often. I don’t blame any parent for choosing a “fruit bar” over a real piece of fruit if the fruit bar is a quarter the price. I’m a parent and I’ve fallen for it many times. A big bag of chips often only costs $1.59 at Coles or Woolworths. The kids like it (as do we) and it makes us feel happy (although fleetingly). However, we also like eating watermelon, but at $10 a pop, it’s an expensive habit. So how would a tax work? Many people in the last five or 10 years have spoken of a “sugar tax”, but almost every politician gives in to the big corporations and refuses to implement such a thing. Nobody likes to rock the boat and the sugar industry certainly doesn’t want any policy that affects their bottom line.
