I did 2 videos in French about the same distillery, the WARENGHEM distillery, located in Brittany, the oldest French distillery to produce whisky & the largest French distillery in capacity as well so far (180 000 liters of pure alcohol per year), not a huge amount of alcohol compared to the Scottish ones...(Edradour, for instance, which isn’t any longer the smallest one nowadays, produces 260 000 L.P.A.). For this English version, I have chosen 3 whiskies to review, among the 7 ones I have in my collection : 1/”BREIZH WHISKY”, n.a.s, 65 % Malt (barley), 35 % Grain (wheat), non chillfiltered & non coloured, 42 % (BLENDED WHISKY). Around 35 €, widely available. 2/ ARMORIK "CLASSIC" n.a.s. (4 to 8 yo), ex-Bourbon & other unspecified cask types, non chill filtered & non coloured, 46 % (SINGLE MALT). Around 40/50 €, same availability. 3/ ARMORIK « BREST 2020 », (distilled in 2013, bottled in 2020 : 7 yo), ltd edition (2000 bottles) for the Maritime Brest Festival 2020 ; matured in ex-Bourbon casks & finished in ex-Madeira cask finish, n.c.f., 46 %. Around 60 €, some retailers & on line shops, inc. French shops channel « Le Comptoir Irlandais » (where I paid 59 €). That said, here are a few facts about this distillery : THE WARENGHEM Distillery : The Warenghem distillery, named after the founder’s name, is located in Lannion, in the North of Brittany, in West France. It was build in 1900 with the idea to create a liqueur & spirits distillery, and this is what was made there only until, in 1983, a renewed team decided to add whiskies made locally to the distillery’s spirits portfolio. The very first official French whisky was born in 1987, named "WHISKY BRETON" (Brittany Whisky), a blended whisky, but also, a single blend as well, because both grain (here it is wheat instead of the traditional corn, for 75 %) & malted barley (25 %) are produced at the distillery. While I was preparing a picture gathering of bottle per distillery of my main Speyside distilleries collection to answer to answer to a demand on Twitter to celebrate the Spirit of Speyside festival cancelled as many other whisky festivals because of the lockdown, I thought it could have been relevant to shoot an impromptu video about it & give you some quick impressions about each bottle on the table (17!) so I did it & managed to do it under a 15 minutes time format, which I am happy about ! This is my way of paying tribute to all these distilleries all over the world & in Scotland especially which had, for many, not only did an effort to produce hand sanitizers, but also were obliged to close their doors to the public therefore it led a lot of public services, hotels, restaurants, bars & local shops, tourism places & monuments to close as well or be sometimes opened but with a lot of difficulty. All these companies will suffer from this crisis & we have to support them, and even more if they are craft/small and/or family owned companies...For once I will do a premiere at this occasion...Feel free to comment & give your thoughts avec the distilleries, the expressions & the situation as well. Coming back in this bit difficult period of summer (with my flat still hot, a finishing cold, and more worrying than ever troubles in my country, etc...), I’ve decided to delay a bit proper whisky review with tastings on camera for this video (except for one whisky’s first impressions), and, instead, give you something I don’t often do, an update of what’s new in my collection, whisky wise, since the beginning of the year, letting most of the doubles or blends aside, and focusing entirely on single-malts too.
