***”Suede”*** are an English rock band formed in London in 1989. ***”Suede”*** is the debut Suede album, released in March 1993 on **[Nude Records](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nude_Records)**. Recorded in Master Rock studios late 1992 and early 1993 and produced by ***[Ed Buller](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Buller)***, it was the fastest-selling debut album in British history in almost a decade.
Guitarist ***[Bernard Butler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Butler)*** has a talent for crafting effortlessly catchy, crunching glam hooks, but what brings these elegant sounds to life is Anderson, who invests them with bed-sit angst and seamy sex. His voice is calculatedly affected and theatrical, but it fits the grand emotion of his self-consciously poetic lyrics.
And while the sound of Suede frequently recalls the peak of glam rock, its punk-influenced passion and self-conscious appropriation of the past make it thoroughly postmodern. Coincidentally, its embrace of trashy pop helped usher in an era of Britpop, but few bands captured the theatrical melancholy that gave Suede such resonance.

For listeners who had caught up with the Cardigans on their breakout album, ***"Life"***, the group's third album was a confusing pastiche which included several conventional pop songs, but also added tracks with left-field arrangements and some (comparatively) disturbing lyrics. In reality, however, the group had simply returned to the mood and feel of their debut album.
On ***"Emmerdale"***, the melancholy was personal and solitary in nature, but here depression is focused on unfaithful lovers and depressing lament of unrequited affection.

The band's original line-up was ***[Shaun Ryder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_Ryder)*** (vocals), his brother ***[Paul Ryder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Ryder)*** (bass), ***Mark Day*** (guitar), ***Paul Davis*** (keyboard), and ***Gary Whelan*** (drums). ***[Mark "Bez" Berry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bez_(dancer))*** later joined the band onstage as a dancer/percussionist. ***[Rowetta](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowetta)*** joined the band as a vocalist in 1990.

The showy production and sometimes busy arrangements might have been overbearing if they weren't paired with typically memorable and melodically pleasing songs. Luckily, the album is full of the kind of hooky, sticky songs that the band made their name on.
