When he retired in 2012, the reporter once queried about his identity and asked, "Where are you from?" He answered without hesitation, "I'm from Kowloon." After nine years, Justice Bokhary accepted to be interviewed again amid the drastic changes that Hong Kong is facing. He says, "I have very strong feelings about this place. I of course was born in Hong Kong, well, not strictly speaking true - I was born in Kowloon, haha!" Since the sovereignty of Hong Kong has changed 24 years ago, the city has undergone ups and downs. Several waves of exodus have been also observed since the Sino-British negotiation in the 1980s to the implementation of the National Security Law. There are also "returnees" who decide to leave again. "This is where I grew up and I’m never gonna leave this place," says Justice Bokhary. As a child in an immigrant family, Justice Bokhary says that he respects people's decision to leave the city, but he hopes people will stay as he does. "I have some faith that there are still good times to be had here, but if I was totally wrong, there will be nothing but hard times, and I will still stay here and share it with the people of Hong Kong."
