At its March meeting, the Federal Reserve approved the first interest rate hike in more than three years. What caught some by surprise is that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the Federal Reserve is not "actively considering" a 0.75 percentage point interest rate hike at a future meeting. Not only is the federal government spending large amounts of money, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell himself has said the Fed will tolerate inflation above its 2% target for a period of time before raising interest rates. The big unknown is whether the FOMC minutes will finally convince investors that inflation is a problem and that policy tightening that affects markets needs to continue. We also have to wait until the March FOMC meeting for the full FOMC economic forecast. As noted by LendingTree chief economist Tendayi Kapfidze, if a rate hike this quarter, it will be announced at the March FOMC meeting. First, he noted that the FOMC typically announces rate hikes during the third month of each quarter, not the first. When President Powell came under pressure that the market had discounted two rate hikes in the second half of next year, he brushed off the problem and reiterated that the trajectory of rate hikes would be determined by the economy; with open options. Some are wondering if the gradual pace of rate hikes envisaged in the Economic Forecasts, which suggests a three-quarter point increase this year, will be adequate. Major stock indexes initially moved slightly on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve announced it would raise interest rates by 0.5 percentage point next month and begin slashing its portfolio by $9 trillion. Federal Reserve Chairman and Vice Chairman Lyle Brainard said the Fed "will continue to tighten monetary policy methodically through a series of rate hikes and begin rapid balance sheet reduction immediately after our May meeting."
