Introducing "Jana Plays Scipriani"
Redbooth proudly presents "Jana plays Scipriani", a series of recorded video sessions with baroque cellist Jana Semaan interpreting the 12 Toccatas of Francesco Paulo Scipriani.
Scipriani aka. Supriani (1678-1753) wrote a collection of Toccatas for the newly born cello with an initiation in the cello technique called „Principij da imparare a suonare il violoncello e con 12 toccate a solo“ in 1720.
The pieces are a fundamental discovery in the history of the cello instrument. They are a building block to each cello student and a great source to improve musicality and technique.
The manuscript is at the music conservatory San Pietro a Majella in Napoli.
Jana's Bio:
Jana is a Lebanese born cellist and music educator.
She graduated from the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart-Germany where she completed her studies in cello performance and achieved her Master's degree in Early Music/Baroque Cello.
Today, Jana pursues her career as a performer and teaches music at several universities in Lebanon. She is head of the first Center for Early Music in the Middle East at the Antonine University.

Jana's words on the Toccata Nr.12 :
The last Toccata, Dodicesima, is in F minor; a dark tonality for the cello. Despite its 12/8 meter and its constant movement in 8th notes, its tonality makes it rather obscure and agitated. The fact that this Toccata is the last one and that it is in F minor makes it technically pretty challenging for the cellist. The big leaps motives in the 8th notes give the illusion of rotation in the music. Just before the recapitulation, it gets a bit lighter with a stop on a C major chord and then continues with a repetition of the introduction and a clear ending in F minor.

OSTINATO – A recurring common theme
Also in times of restricted travel possibilities due to the pandemic and political regulations, Ostinato members wanted to continue their joint efforts to transform the world of music into a world without borders by building up long-term relationships between musicians from Europe and the Middle-East.
The members of this ensemble are native of Lebanon, France and Germany and have been working together in different groups and musical fields for many years (As university teachers, orchestra members, students, chamber music partners etc.).
We believe that with the power of music, we can break borders, use our differences to create beauty and therefor influence our entourage with the thing we can do best: Music.

Jana Semaan performs the first movement (Largo) of Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) 's Sonata in E minor, RV 40 for cello and basso continuo.
The thorough bass is executed on the baroque cello instead of the harpsichord, allowing the cello to become a harmonic instrument.
This is a homemade- quarantine-recording with an educative purpose to see the multiple functions of the cello. Also, allowing cello ensembles to broaden their repertoire based on original music

Jana Semaan's interpretation on Toccata Terza (Toccata Number 3) composed by Baroque Composer Francesco Paolo Scipriani aka Supriano (1678-1753).
The video was filmed and recorded at St. John the Baptist - Amchit, Lebanon.
Jana's words on the Toccata Nr.3 :
Despite the Toccata's length, Scipriani modulates several times before returning to the main key of B flat major. Arpeggios causing these modulations are more to be played by keyboard or plucked instruments rather than the cello. Also, the 3/8 rhythm reminds us of dance music from the Baroque era.
