What is an index fund?
An index fund is a fund – either a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF) – that is based on a preset basket of stocks, or index. This index may be created by the fund manager itself or by another company such as an investment bank or a brokerage.
These fund managers then mimic the index, creating a fund that looks as much as possible like the index, without actively managing the fund. Over time the index changes, as companies are added and deleted, and the fund manager mechanically replicates those changes in the fund.
Because of this approach, index funds are considered a type of passive investing, rather than active investing where a manager analyzes stocks and tries to pick the best performers. This passive approach means that index funds tend to have low expense ratios, keeping them cheap for investors getting into the market.
Some of the most well-known indexes include the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq 100. Index funds are a popular strategy for ETFs to use, and virtually all ETFs are based on indexes.
Why are index funds so popular?
Investors like index funds because they offer immediate diversification. With one purchase, investors can own a wide swath of companies.
For example, one share of an index fund based on the S&P 500 provides ownership in hundreds of companies. While some funds such as S&P 500 index funds allow you to own companies across industries, others allow exposure to a specific industry, country or even investing style (say, dividend stocks).
The S&P 500 index fund continues to be among the most popular index funds. S&P 500 funds offer a good return over time, they’re diversified and they’re about as low risk as stock investing gets. Like all stocks, it will fluctuate, but over time the index has returned about 10 percent annually. That doesn’t mean index funds make money every year, but over long periods of time that’s been the average return.
Best index funds for January 2020
The list below includes S&P 500 index funds from a variety of companies, and it includes some of the lowest-cost funds trading on the public markets. When it comes to an index fund like this, one of the most important factors in your total return is cost. Included are two mutual funds and three ETFs
1. Fidelity ZERO Large Cap Index
2. Vanguard S&P 500 ETF
3. SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust
4. iShares Core S&P 500 ETF
5. Schwab S&P 500 Index Fund
1. Fidelity ZERO Large Cap Index (FNILX)
The Fidelity ZERO Large Cap Index mutual fund is part of the investment company’s foray into mutual funds with no expense ratio, thus its ZERO moniker. The fund doesn’t officially track the S&P 500 – technically it follows the Fidelity U.S. Large Cap Index – but the difference is academic. The re

I explain why Russian women don't care much about money when dating foreign men contrary to popular belief. I emphasize the importance of fun experiences that a Russian woman would appreciate more then purely the effect of having a large bank account or wealth.

This video clip was film in Tallinn, Estonia during late summer. At this time I had rented a vehicle to move some belongings into my new apartment which is located just outside the city of Tallinn. The roads are fantastic for driving in Tallinn Estonia and it was made easier to move by the great weather that we enjoyed on that particular day in the city.

I explain here why dating apps could decline bigtime in next 10 to 20 years due to many factors on the horizon including areas such as: virtual reality, augmented reality, robots among other factors.
Even though online dating still carries to some extent a bad reputation, it has brought our societies many positive developments. Today still, it is not well perceived for a woman, in comparison to men, to have multiple relationships and live her life the way she truly wants, without constantly being judged. With the democratization of online dating services women can run their own private life without the need to justify anything to anybody. This has been a true positive development for our societies and online dating has much more to bring.
While the number of children born from couples who met online will skyrocket over the next decade, this is also a good time to question what could be the next development wave of this rather young industry and how technology will help people to connect differently. Augmented/virtual reality, artificial intelligence, chat bots, machine learning, etc.? How will our kids meet online in the future? And how could this contribute to making a better society?
Internet has radically changed the way we meet new people and find our partners. People meet more through online channels and outside of their friends, family and work networks, but unlike the usage of internet and social networks, people are still embarrassed to mention they are using (if they even are) an online dating platform. Worse, once they register on an online dating platform, users tend to behave in a schizophrenic manner alternating between binge-like usage, profile deletion, testing of new platforms, reregister and so on.
Future for dating:
While the tech industry is full of buzzwords the online dating industry has not cracked the video yet. Big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, voice recognition, virtual reality, chatbots, blockchain, how could that apply to online dating?
Besides some security features that apps like Badoo and Bumble have implemented to ensure the identity of their users, all fundamental technology shifts have not been applied to the online dating industry yet. This can be explained by:
love and algorithms, it’s not a match, as I explained in the article Stop talking algorithm when it comes to relationships, I have not been able to find any scienti

This is a detailed account of my lost in geron, in September of 2018. This was a very pivotal learning experience from me and influenced my trading styles to this day and learning also to properly manage my risks and have a real strategy in place.
Geron Corporation, located in Menlo Park, Calif., announced that Janssen Pharmaceutical Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, has terminated their 2014 Collaboration and License Agreement. The two companies had teamed up to develop and commercialize imetelstat, a first-in-class telomerase inhibitor, for myelofibrosis and myelodysplastic syndromes.
The effective date of termination, under the collaboration deal, is September 28, 2018. At that time, the rights licensed to the imetelstat program, which includes any intellectual property rights created via the collaboration, return to Geron. Janssen will have no further obligations to fund any of the ongoing clinical trials.
The transition will take place over approximately 12 months with operational assistance from Janssen. Janssen will supply imetelstat to Geron for up to two years. Two clinical trials of imtelstat, IMbark for myelofibrosis and IMerge for myelodysplastic syndromes, will continue.
“We believe the clinical results from IMbark provide valuable insights into the potential future development of imetelstat for an underserved relapsed and refractory myelofibrosis patient population. We also believe the combined data of 38 patients from the initial and expansion cohorts for the target patient population from the Phase II portion of IMerge support further development of imetelstat, and we are therefore prioritizing the initiation of the Phase III portion of IMerge.”
IMerge is a two-part clinical trial testing the drug in transfusion-dependent patients with low or immediate-1 risk myelodysplastic syndromes who have relapsed after or are refractory to previous treatment with an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA). Part one was planned as a Phase II, open-label, single-arm trial to evaluate efficacy and safety. Part two is planned as a Phase III double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study in about 170 patients. The primary endpoint is the rate of red blood cell transfusion independent (RBC-TI rate) lasting at least eight weeks.
In part 1 of Phase II, 32 patients were enrolled, with 13 patients who had not had previous treatment with a hypomethylating agent (HMA) or lenalidomide and didn’t have a del(5q) chromosomal abnormality, which is to say, did not have a portion of the q arm of their chromosome 5 deleted.
IMbark was a Phase II trial to study starting dose levels of the drug in about 200 patients with intermediate-2 or high-risk myelofibrosis (MF) who had relapsed after or are refractory to previous treatment with a JAK inhibitor
