In a dramatically different tale of espionage and conspiracy in World War II, Shadow Warriors of World War II unveils the history of the courageous women who volunteered to work behind enemy lines. Sent into Nazi-occupied Europe by the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Britains Special Operations Executive (SOE), these women helped establish a web of resistance groups across the continent. Their heroism, initiative, and resourcefulness contributed to the Allied breakout of the Normandy beachheads and even infiltrated Nazi Germany at the height of the war, into the very heart of Hitlers citadel—Berlin. Young and daring, the female agents accepted that they could be captured, tortured, or killed, but others were always readied to take their place. Women of enormous cunning and strength of will, the Shadow Warriors stories have remained largely untold until now.

The new edition of this bestselling dental textbook has been thoroughly updated to keep abreast of current knowledge of the disease processes, and the role of operative dentistry in their management. The book describes, clearly and concisely, the indications and methods for many common operative and conservative procedures in dental practice. Procedures and techniques are illustrated in full colour, and where appropriate, step-by-step sequences are given. Its popularity lies in the fact that it doubles as an atlas, and the text is clear and accessible. The new co-author, Tim Watson, is well known as an expert in adhesive dentistry. A new chapter has been added on adhesion and adhesive restorations, since these are now the first choice for primary lesions for all surfaces and all teeth in the mouth. Amalgam is still thoroughly described, but bonding techniques are now included with a shift away from pins where retention is a problem. The diagnosis of failed restorations has been updated in the light of new research and techniques for refurbishment and repair of restorations are advocated where appropriate. As in previous editions, the approach is disease and prevention orientated, is problem based and the changes have a research evidence-base.ReviewFrom reviews of the Seventh Edition`It is a book of perspectives and of context, and to the authors credit. It presents these quite well... Broader than most dental texts in its perspective, and shorter than almost all other operative texts in its length, this edition of Pickards Manual is a very readable collection of treatment guidelines for operative dentistry. Canadian Dental Association Journal`It is primarily aimed at the undergraduate, but it can be recommended to practitioners who over the years have slipped into a routine based on how they were taught twenty or more years ago... This is a well illustrated, well set out and easy to read manual which can be recommended to undergraduates and not-so-new graduates alike. Understanding Broadband over Power Line explores all aspects of the emerging technology that enables electric utilities to provide support for high-speed data communications via their power infrastructure. This book examines the two methods used to connect consumers and businesses to the Internet through the utility infrastructure the existing electrical wiring of a home or office and a wireless local area network (WLAN) access point. Written in a practical style that can be understood by network engineers and non-technologists alike, this volume offers tutorials on electric utility infrastructure and home wiring, to ensure that all readers have a common base of knowledge. It reviews power line operations, analyzing how electricity is generated and delivered to consumers, and how the wiring inside buildings forms individual circuits. An appreciation for how technologies work allows for an understanding of how broadband over power line has the potential to provide ubiquitous communications that offer home users, network managers, and LAN administrators with another solution to meet their high-speed networking requirements.**

An respected thinker points the way ahead. This book is nothing short of a state-of-the-world address, delivered by a scholar uniquely suited to the task. Immanuel Wallerstein, one of the most prominent social scientists of our time, documents the profound transformations our world is undergoing. With these transformations, he argues, come equally profound changes in how we understand the world. Wallerstein divides his work between an appraisal of significant recent events and a study of the shifts in thought influenced by those events. The books first half reviews the major happenings of recent decades-the collapse of the Leninist states, the exhaustion of national liberation movements, the rise of East Asia, the challenges to national sovereignty, the dangers to the environment, the debates about national identity, and the marginalization of migrant populations. Wallerstein places these events and trends in the context of the changing modern world-system as a whole and identifies the historical choices they put before us. The second half of the book takes up current issues in the world of knowledge-the vanishing faith in rationality, the scattering of knowledge activities, the denunciation of Eurocentrism, the questioning of the division of knowledge into science and humanities, and the relation of the search for the true and the search for the good. Wallerstein explores how these questions have arisen from larger social transformations, and why the traditional ways of framing such debates have become obstacles to resolving them. The End of the World As We Know It concludes with a crucial analysis of the momentous intellectual challenges to social science as we know it and suggests possible responses to them. Immanuel Wallerstein is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and director of the Fernand Braudel Center at Binghamton University. Among his numerous books are The Modern World-System (1974, 1980, 1989), Unthinking Social Science (1991), and After Liberalism (1995).**

Plotinus Ennead V.8, originally part of a single work (with III.8, V.5, and II.9), provides the foundation for a positive view of the universe as an image of divine beauty against the Gnostic rejection of the world. Although it emphasizes the cosmic dimension of beauty, it is, as are most treatises of Plotinus, concerned with the individual soul. The notion that the artist has within him an idea of beauty that derives directly from the intelligible world in fact coincides with his theory that each one of us has access to Intellect through his or her own intellect. It is the exploitation of this theme that forms the central dynamic of the treatise, with its stress on our ability to see and be one with the intelligible world and its beauty.

The old Darwinian model of evolution was recently substituted with the selfish gene theory. The present book suggests that this mainstream theory is just as erroneous as Darwins original model and we can soon expect another revolution. It suggests replacing the selfish gene model by a theory called frozen evolution. The new theory assumes that the vast majority of species encountered in nature are not capable to evolve even when exposed to extremely strong selection and thus only passively wait until changes in their environment accumulate to such a degree that they have no choice but to quietly die out. Why is this true and where do the new species come from? How is it possible that species are usefully adapted to their environment and how can evolution occur at all in such an evolutionarily frozen world? This book offers an answer to these questions and, at the same time, also a frank and somewhat unusual insight into behind the scenes of contemporary science. **
