The inventor of PCR is Kary Mullis (passed away in August 2019) answers to the audience question
The inventor of PCR is Kary Mullis (passed away in August 2019) answers to the audience question:

" How do they misuse PCR to estimate these supposed free viral RNAs that may or may not be there?"

Kary's response explains the general functioning and intended use of the PCR testing technique (even if the RNA virus used as main example here is HIV, on which Mullis had done extensive research).

Kary insists that "the presence of a piece of RNA" does not mean "sick or contagious". RNA chunks can be present in our body for up to weeks. He also says that PCR is sensistive and powerful enough that a few molecules are enough to be amplified and detected by the technique. Using PCR as a diagnostic without the presence of clinical complaints is absolutely inadvisable. Therefore, in the current COVID-19 context, using PCR to diagnose Corona Virus infection is misapplication of the technique and completely inappropriate.
