MILITARY EXERCISES FEARED TO BE COVER FOR PUTIN’S SECRET WEAPONS PLAN
Military Exercises Feared to Be Cover for Putin’s Secret Weapons Plan
KRAMATORSK. Ukraine—Ukrainian and Western military insiders fear that joint exercises that began on Thursday will be used as cover by President Vladimir Putin for the unprecedented integration of Russian and Belarusian forces. and the smuggling of weapons and troops over the border to assist pro Kremlin rebels in Ukraine. The conditions for military action against Ukraine are greater now than at any time in the past several weeks. analysts and former Ukrainian government officials told The Daily Beast. as the Russian military amasses troops along virtually every border with the Eastern European nation. Any military action. including a limited invasion and annexation of the contested eastern regions currently controlled by pro Russian separatists. would be timed to three simultaneous events later this month. those officials said. Meanwhile. experts pointed to a day in late February which could be used as cover for the maneuvering of military hardware. That day. Feb. 20. marks the eighth anniversary of the deadliest day of the Euromaidan protests. and is “a huge trigger” which could lead foreign actors to “use the protests as a cover for direct action.” said a former Ukrainian defense ministry official. who asked to remain anonymous to discuss sensitive government briefings. “It is the potential date for internal destabilization which could be a chance to create...
San Francisco Cops Have Been Using Rape Kits To Arrest Victims. DA Says
San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said Monday that his office has recently learned that the city’s police force has been using DNA taken from sexual assault victims to link them to crimes. potentially discouraging people who’ve been raped from coming forward. Boudin. who revealed details of his findings in an interview with The San Francisco Chronicle. said his office became aware of the practice last week when the San Francisco Police Department used DNA it had collected from a woman years ago as part of a rape exam in order to connect her to a recent felony property crime. Advertisement “Public safety demands that we support sexual assault survivors and end any practices that dissuade them from coming forward.” Boudin tweeted. Rape kits are collected when a victim comes forward about a sexual assault crime. In the process of compiling the kit. an examiner gathers bodily fluids from the survivor to test for any evidence their attacker may have left behind. Boudin says SFPD has been entering survivors’ DNA into a database to compare it to evidence from other crime scenes. His office is not aware of how many times a victim’s rape kit DNA has been used to arrest them. he said. but added that the database may hold thousands of victims’ DNA information collected over “many. many years.” The SFPD reported more than 200 rape cases in San Francisco in...

PSA: Today's 'Wordle' solution depends on which site you use
No. you're not going mad. The splintering of Wordle has arrived. As the clock hit midnight around the world on Feb. 14 and a new Wordle refreshed itself on browsers everywhere. players discovered that for the first time. that day's answer wasn't the same word for everyone. (Don't worry — I won't spoil the solution until the end of the post.) This apparent glitch also occurred in my household. where we solve it separately over our morning coffee — when my partner and I both had all five tiles flip green. we compared notes and found that we'd wound up with different answers. both correct. for the first time in over a month of playing. The key thing here is that I'm still playing on the original site. powerlanguage.co.uk. where creator Josh Wardle first uploaded the game. Most players have been migrated automatically to the New York Times website. after the company bought the game from Wardle in a seven figure deal last month — and that group includes my partner. as well as most of the friends in the group chat where we share our results. After losing a 12 day streak when I switched phones. I haven't closed the tab where my current 44 day streak lives. magically refreshing each night at the stroke of 12. (Streaks were. after some brief issues. carried over to the new site. but I am both a huge show off and selectively superstitious. so I've been putting it off as long as I...

After fleeing Canada to escape alleged abuse. Kaillie Humphries wins gold for USA
YANQING. China — There were times when Kaillie Humphries. stuck between countries. and between ambition and alleged abuse. wondered whether this moment would come. There were days when her shoulders would slump. and her insides would deflate. and tears would flow. There were dreams of the gold medal Humphries ultimately won here on Monday. of speeding down a bobsled track faster than any other woman in the world. of standing atop monobob’s inaugural Olympic podium. victorious. But for years. Humphries was “stateless” and helpless. She’d won three Olympic medals for Canada last decade. She then defected to escape a coach. As a U.S. resident with an American husband. she won world championships for Team USA in 2020 and 2021. Three months ago. however. she didn’t have a second passport — and therefore. per Olympic rules. didn’t have a route to these Beijing Games. In December. the U.S. granted her one. and that’s why she pulled on a helmet emblazoned with an American flag on Monday. She held her arms aloft. and grabbed a flag. and chanted. “U S A!” She scrunched her face. fending off emotion. as she stood behind a podium. then stepped onto it. and sung the anthem. She felt every word. Because she wanted to “give back to a country that has adopted me. that has...

Boston Celtics topple Denver Nuggets behind Derrick White’s big debut. 108 102
The Boston Celtics entered Friday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets as both a brand new team and also an incomplete one. They were heavily involved in the NBA’s busy trade deadline. sending off Dennis Schröder. Josh Richardson and Romeo Langford. among others. to acquire Derrick White and old friend Daniel Theis. As the dust settles and deals are finalized. though. there was still basketball to be played. and the Celtics hosted the Nuggets missing Theis (inactive as his trade finalizes) and with three open roster spots. Despite being short handed. with off nights from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown (36 points on just 12 of 36 shooting) and a red hot first half from Denver. the Celtics were determined to keep their win streak alive. and they thoroughly out dueled the Nuggets in the second half to accomplish exactly that. Leading the way were Marcus Smart (22 points. 7 assists. 5 steals) and Robert Williams (15 points. 16 rebounds. 2 assists. 2 steals. 3 blocks). overcoming a triple double from Nikola Jokic (23 points. 16 rebounds. 11 assists) to record their seventh straight win. This was the Celtics’ first game after their busy trade deadline. and while it wasn’t our first true glance at the new look of the team. it was the first game in green for their top acquisition: White. The 27 year old checked into the game for the first time with just over four minutes...

Harris flies to Europe to help secure Ukraine border as Biden stays behind
Vice President Kamala Harris set off Thursday on a peace mission to Europe as Russia appeared to accelerate preparations for an invasion of Ukraine — undeterred by her failure to resolve the ongoing US Mexico border crisis as President Biden’s point person on illegal immigration. About two hours after Harris departed DC to attend the Munich Security Conference. Biden emerged from the White House and said he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin will launch an invasion of Ukraine “within the next several days.” As Harris flew east to Germany. Biden traveled west to Lorain. Ohio. to talk about fixing Great Lakes pollution through his three month old bipartisan infrastructure law — prompting his aides to insist the jaunt wouldn’t distract him from the potential outbreak of the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. “I doubt [Putin’s] sitting back at the Kremlin right now shaking because Kamala Harris is over there.” Rep Tim Burchett (R Tenn.). a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. said in an interview with Newsmax TV Wednesday. “She couldn’t pour something out of a boot if there were instructions written on the heel.” Burchett added. “She can’t even find our southern border. much less the Ukrainian border. This is a joke. this is a travesty.” Biden tapped Harris in March to stem illegal immigration across the southern border. but the crisis only got worse. with a record breaking 1.9 million arrests in 2021. Critics blame lax Biden administration enforcement policies. but Harris defended her work last month in Honduras. saying addressing the “root causes” of illegal immigration wouldn’t have an effect “overnight.” The vice president’s performance on the US border crisis received bipartisan blowback. including from Rep. Henry Cuellar (D Texas). who said in December. “She was tasked with that job. [but] it doesn’t look like she’s very interested in this.” “Biden is deploying Kamala Harris to Europe to help ease Russia Ukraine tensions.” Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R Tenn.) tweeted last week. adding sarcastically: “Right. because she’s doing so well with our southern border…” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R Colo.) tweeted a video clip of fictional boss Michael Scott from “The Office” shouting. “No. God. please no! No! No! No!” to suggest Ukraine’s probable reaction to Harris repping the US in Munich. Other social media users were more supportive. “Safe travels and give’em hell MVP!” one person tweeted. After arriving in Europe. Harris will meet with the leaders of the three Baltic countries — Estonia. Latvia and Lithuania — on Friday before delivering a set piece speech Satu

A lesson to recall: The voters teach the San Francisco Board of Education common sense
Recall elections are blunt instruments. channeling voter anger against incumbents before their terms are up. New York doesn’t have that option. but California does. While last fall’s failed effort to unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom was a waste of time and money. this week’s removal of three members of the San Francisco Board of Education was righteous and empowering to parents fed up with far left educrats who didn’t keep learning as the top priority. The mopes on the school board made at least three huge mistakes. First. in a mass puritan progressive cleansing. they were stupid enough to vote to rename 44 schools whose monikers failed members’ rigid moral litmus test. We’re not talking traitorous Confederate generals and slave owners. but Lincoln and Roosevelt — remember. this is San Francisco. not Atlanta. Even though the board undid that vote following the deserved uproar. the message was sent that political posturing trumped serving children. and it compounded when schools were far too slow to reopen during COVID. So tardy were they getting kids back to class. the city had to sue the board. So to petitioning went the parents. who were also steamed that the board dismantled the merit based admission system for the West Coast’s premier public high school. Lowell High School. replacing it with a lottery. Take note. those who want open admissions for Stuyvesant. Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech. Mayor London Breed. like everyone else in elected office there a liberal Democrat. backed the recall and so did overwhelming numbers of San Franciscans. It’s likely that all seven on the board would have been tossed. but four of them were elected in 2020 and therefore were ineligible for the gong.

Widow describes moment her husband was shot in movie theater after argument over texting: 'I see his eyes are just glazed over'
The role of a tossed bag of movie popcorn played a central part Monday as a trial opened for a retired Florida police captain who fatally shot a man in a theater eight years ago. Meanwhile. the victim's widow. who was also shot during the incident. took the stand. The question isn't whether Curtis Reeves shot and killed Chad Oulson at the theater on Jan. 13. 2014. It's whether Reeves felt threatened enough by Oulson to justify firing his .380 caliber handgun after the two argued over Oulson's cellphone use in the theater. To prosecutors. the triggering event in the argument was Oulson's tossing of a bag of popcorn at Reeves and that's not enough to claim self defense. 'What the evidence will show you is that Chad Oulson was shot and killed over tossing popcorn.' Assistant State Attorney Scott Rosenwasser told jurors in an opening statement. 'That's no reason to kill another person.' The defense. however. contends that Reeves. then 71. was in declining health and feared the 43 year old. larger Oulson would punch or otherwise assault him and may have thrown his cellphone at the older man. Defense attorney Dino Michaels said Reeves also understood risk and sensed danger from his 27 years with the Tampa Police Department. 'This isn't about popcorn.' Michaels told the jury. 'You're going to see there was an attack before the popcorn was thrown.' Reeves. now 79. faces a...
