Backpacking & Landscape Photography Scotland - Winter in The Mamores.
Out for my first landscape photography wildcamp of 2018. Due to the good yet cold weather I decided to head out to the Mamores which are a group of mountains in the Lochaber area of the Grampian Mountains in the Scottish Highlands.
They form an east-west ridge approximately fifteen kilometres in length lying between Glen Nevis to the north and Loch Leven to the south.
This was my first outing with my new camera to try it out for filmmaking but have to say I still prefer my good old GoPro for ease of setup and even its quality to a point.
Due to the deep snow I did not get to the location I had hoped so had to make camp a bit lower down and just managed to get some sunset shots of the winter landscape just as the sun dipped down behind the mountains.
In the morning I made a mad dash off the mountains and round to Glencoe to try and capture some sunrise images at a few locations in the area.
Although very cold it was still an amazing adventure which my film can only hint at. The views of Glencoe in winter are hard to beat and recommend you take a drive to visit if you ever have the time and chance.
I am looking forward to some more snow now, hopefully over the coming months and the opportunity to get out again for another winter wildcamp.

This is the first time I have ever owned a MTB and my hope is that it will allow me to travel further at the weekends over shorter periods of time. My plan is to use it to explore more interesting places whilst still enjoying my remote and secluded wildcamping.

This pyramid style (MID) tent is made by Jumper Home a small ultralight tent and gear manufacturer based in China.
This particular tent version is his DCF Dyneema 1.5P version and comes complete with a full integrated mesh inner sleeping area. This is similar to many other lightweight single pole setup tents such as the 3F Lanshan Pro range.
It is very light for the size and space it offers weighing in at 650 grams complete with stuff sack. It is 2.7m Long, 1.6m wide and 1.4m high.
The tent is made from Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF), also known as Cuben Fibre, which is a high-performance non-woven composite material used for its extremely high-strength and low-weight. Combined with this style of tent it is exceptionally wind and weather resistant.
The tent also has optional 10cm snow skirts as well but does come with 8 extra guy-line points as standard for use in stormy conditions and during winter. For winter use I would say that DCF material does not shed snow as well from the steep sides as good as a Silnylon tent does in this regard.
My main concern with the tent is the integrated inner and how that may perform in regards to the formation of condensation. Have not really been a fan of this type of setup as yet.
However, the tent is very well made and makes a fantastic roomy and spacious shelter to sit out very bad weather.
There are a few things that I personally feel would make it even better and have spoken to the manufacturer Jumper Home about this. Again, it is only my own opinion and we will see what he things of my ideas.

Landscape photography trip exploring, Lewis & Harris in the Outer Hebrides.
This is a short Vlog of our 4 day holiday and landscape photography trip to the 'Outer Hebrides' in Scotland, and in particular exploring stunning locations across the ‘Isle of Lewis & Harris’.
We spent a couple of days on the ‘Isle of Skye’ before heading across and encountered wild fires on the hillside and at one point thought we would be evacuated due to the severity of the fires.
The islands are a mecca for landscape photographers and having seen so many images from locations across the island that we just had to go and experience them for ourselves.
One of the benefits of car camping is the ability to have a fairly cheap holiday break without breaking the bank balance. We stayed at the campsite ‘Eilean Fraoich’ which had good facilities and gave us a good base point to go out and explore the many sites we had planned to see.
We visited many more locations that did not make it into the Vlog due to time constraints and also the fact it was our holiday. But I do hope however this short amount of footage captured gives a taste and feel for what a special place this is to visit.
The ‘Calanais Standing Stones’ are magical to visit but very busy this time of year with tourists. Much the same happened at ‘Neist Point Lighthouse’ on Skye which meant we could not get parked and could hardly move due to the vast numbers descending on the places.
My goal will be to revisit these places later in the year or even in winter.
I would like to say that driving on the island is a great experience and not overly busy with cars, and all the roads are in excellent condition and never seen one single pothole during our trip.

Overnight mountain wild camping trip during the start of winter. This trip would also let me test out some new items of kit to help me stay warm when winter camping in the UK.
This wild camping location is just to the rear of the Glenshee Ski Centre in Scotland and makes for a fairly easy location to reach.
Apologies for some of the poor Audio as the film should have been a lot longer and in more depth about the equipment I use whilst winter camping. Lots of footage ruined due to equipment malfunction. :(

the-cape-wrath-trail-the-calm-before-the
The Cape Wrath Trail is often referred to as Britain’s toughest long-distance hiking trail.
Stretching approximately 230 miles (370 km) from the Highland hub of Fort William to the remote lighthouse of Cape Wrath, it is an unmarked and sometimes trail-less route that passes through the wild and spectacular landscapes of north-western Scotland.
For my trip I had decided to hike the trail in reverse setting off from the Cape Wrath Lighthouse and finishing at Fort William.
Due to the challenge of the trip I decided to use as much ultralight hiking gear as I could for this trip, yet still be warm, comfortable and safe for multiple nights wildcamping in the remote Scottish landscape.
The wildcamping gear that I used proved to be fantastic and I had no issue with the overall weight I was carrying for this amazing long-distance hiking adventure.
I plan to discuss in future videos the wildcamping gear that worked and some that didn’t. It was also great to be able to try out my Mountain Laurel Designs Duomid tent for the first-time wild camping since I had purchased it. It proved to be a great wildcamping tent during some windy storms and heavy rain.
Things started well but as you will see in an upcoming future film, things started to unravel quickly due to one significant bad choice creating a storm of issues that ultimately ended my trip much quicker than I had expected.

7-days-solo-backpacking-trip-–-cape
The, Cape Wrath Trail is considered to be one of the most challenging and difficult long distance hikes in the UK.
It is an unofficial, unmarked and magnificently challenging route for experienced long-distance backpackers, the Trail passes through some of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes.
However I believe it should be called the Cape Wrath Challenge as it will challenge you both mentally and physically. It will challenge your fitness, mental fortitude, hill skills and gear selection unlike anything you may have done before.
Due to time restraints I had decided to spend 7 days backpacking the Southern Section of the trail with one rest day in the middle. My hike would start from the Corran Ferry crossing and finish up at the small village of Ullapool on the shores of Loch Broom.
This was the last section of the CWT I had still to complete having already walked the northern section southward from the Lighthouse to Ullapool and having to pull out due to blisters last year.
It normally takes 2-3 weeks to cover the 230-miles through the highlands of Scotland. Most will usually start from Fort William and finally ending up at the Cape Wrath lighthouse which is the most north westerly point in the whole of the UK.
The terrain and weather can make travel on the trail difficult day to day and good navigation skills are a must. Many of the sections involves multiple steep ascents and descents which can be difficult, often in remote areas of the highlands with no visible paths or routes.

Landscape Photography & Wild Camping Scotland - The Fisherfield Six.
Another landscape photography trip whilst out hiking and wildcamping in the 'Fisherfield Forest'.
This trip was from a few months ago as Scotland was in the midst of a heat wave and to be honest thought I was going to suffer badly from heat stroke. I had taken more on than I had anticipated to be honest.
I was trying out things with the camera in regards to filming and managed to loose a lot of footage due to it being out of focus, so hadnt planned on putting this trip on the big screen, but thought I would try and put something together.
The Fisherfield Forest - also known as the Great Wilderness - contains the remotest Munros in all Scotland. The effort required is fully repaid, however, as this is a spectacular region of dramatic peaks and ridges - the views from the summits are often claimed to be the finest in Scotland.
The route is an epic round of all five Munros and one Corbett, starting and finishing at Shenavall bothy or a nearby wild camp.

My Wild camping & Backpacking Equipment - Old Guide
This is an old film covering what equipment I use and take when wild camping and backpacking in the Scottish hills and mountains.
It was intended as a basic guide and much has now changed over the years since this was made and really need to make a more up to date guide covering what I currently use.

Backpacking into the mountains or glens of Scotland is fantastic. It feels adventurous and liberating to venture into the great outdoors with everything you need to survive and even stay comfortable on your back. By backpacking you have the means to spend time in locations that boggle the mind and ease the soul.
The chance to explore, relax and unwind if only for a night or two.
Recently I have received a lot of emails asking me about what I take when I go out. It can be a bit daunting for someone who is interested – but not experienced – in backpacking to get an idea of what equipment they need to bring into the mountains for an overnight or multi-day camping trip. I am no expert and only class this as lightweight in my own eyes. There are probably far better setups out there, but this film will maybe give you some ideas.
However I do feel that you always want to try and travel light as you can, but you also need all the stuff to keep you warm and dry and enjoy the trip safely. The less you carry the more enjoyable the experience I have found, so this film covers what I personally use and why.
I have been on many camping trips over the years from when I was fairly young and just getting back into it after a long absence. Doing the WHW got me back into the fold and the places I have been and new friends made in this short period has been really amazing.
However it has been a pain trying to get things the way I want them and a lot of money has been spent trying and testing so many different things.
So I’ve learned several valuable lessons about gear. Firstly, you will never stop buying gear! It is a constant cycle as I have found out in a short period of time. I am still looking for my ultimate tent that I can use for 4 seasons yet is extremely light weight. This will most likely never happen and seems to be the same Holy Grail everybody is trying to find. But I keep looking anyway.
Secondly, I feel it often pays to save your pennies and buy the BEST stuff that you can, especially with equipment such as your backpack, sleeping bag, and tent. Believe me, if you skimp on cheap gear, you will eventually buy more replacements and upgrades, and will end up spending far more money in the long run.
