Susan Sarandon Blamed for 9/11...
Are 3rd parties to blame for all the bad things in the world? Some folks certainly think so.

In response to a tweet from Susan Sarandon (who has been a leading voice from Hollywood in support of 3rd party candidates and the candidacy of Senator Bernie Sanders) lending support to Ryan Knight, a progressive activist who has been relentlessly attacked simply for speaking up about the shortcomings of Joe Biden, someone responded:

“Hi progressive kids. Imagine maybe no 9/11, no Iraq War, no financial crash...and 20 ahead years head battling climate change. You can’t because auntie Susan Sarandon did the same 3rd party thing to climate czar Al Gore who lost to Bush by only a handful of votes.”

My question is: how did we get to a point where are we now falsely equating honest conversations from open-minded people who are not okay with the status quo of the current Democratic and Republican duopoly, to somehow being responsible for events like 9/11?

To dissect this issue, James turns to an idea brought forth from social psychologist and NYU professor Jonathan Haidt, who wrote about the conflicting mindset of "truth-seeking" vs. "social justice" or warfare. He argues that the goal of truth seeking is coming to a conclusion based on open and nuanced discussion, whereas social justice focuses on winning and shutting down the opponent.

In the context of the 2020 presidential election, this has led to a pseudo-oppressive, undemocratic environment where voicing critical dissent about Biden is not tolerated and seen as helping Trump. But in the long-haul, the key question we must ask ourselves is do the ends justify the means?
